Scraping carbon and dirty off the piston down into the crankcase. Great way to break in a new piston. A rag or paper towels is a simple way to keep dirt out.
We never got around to making a video of rebuilding the motor but the whole motor needed to be split so we didn't care if we got debris down in the crank case
I'm just an old mechanic. I've seen guys blow engines after dirt fell in changing spark plugs!! I've just bought one of these 112s. I know they are race bikes and those engines must be 100% or they frag. Good time to turn it to a 125!!!. Millennium engineering bores, plates and fits wiseco pistons layering Nicosil Carbide plating to fit the piston perfectly. Do a video when your done! Have your son wear his MX boots too! God Bless you both. I did same w my boys.
We thought about taking it to millennium and having it replated. The cylinder was pretty scored up so we ended up buying a brand new cylinder and rebuilding the whole motor. We no longer have the KX we now have a gas gas 125
I contemplated for a couple weeks sending the cylinder out to get it replayed because there was damage on the cylinder wall. I just ended up buying a new cylinder which was on back over for a couple weeks and then a new top end kit and then we sold the bike

This was over a year ago but the culprit ended up being low antifreeze
