    Does the pulse repair mode have automatic shutting "OFF" display when pulse repair completed? Or they run forever ?

    Thanks very much for that. Very interesting as I have the exact same one. Would it improve things to put the missing parts back? Also is motorcycle battery mode any good for maintenance? Apparently it has a 1.5 amp max, but would the early cutoff still rule maintenance out?

      The best bet is to check the spec of your bike battery. Are your parts missing? - some are OK (ish). For a boost to get you going then this charger is OK. Personally I wouldn't use it without the missing parts. As well as severe noise emissions, the missing parts also affect reliability because the filter suppresses mains transient that destroy the switching FETs. . As is the case with many 'smart chargers' the accuracy of voltage sensing isn't really sufficient. It is not sealed so the charger should not be left switched on outside in a condensing environment such as tucked under a closed bonnet. Use for a boost but get something better for long-term battery support.

    Mine is absolutely the same externally, but it's dated 2020-12 and actually the input AC filter elements are present. For now it seems to work fine. But indicated voltage and current are slightly off as in the video. Wondering if I should opt for a C3 charger.

    • @razenby
      @razenby  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Your charger is OK for the occasional charge. They are susceptible to damp and mains transients but for a quick charge where you need to get back on the road this works OK. The 8A rating is much higher than the manufacturer's specification for most average sized VRLA car starting batteries. It won't do any harm if used occasionally as it might somewhat recondition light sulfated plates. If you leave it connected to 240V mains power then it is likely to blow in a few weeks. Antyhing stronger than a gnat fart will upset it.

I'd watched a few "reviews" which were positive so I placed an order with Amazon earlier. After watching this very informative video I've just cancelled the order. I might wait for your next video if you do mod it safe/legal, I'm handy enough with a soldering iron and enjoy little projects and maybe I'll reorder one in the future. Unless you have any recommendations for a smart charger/maintainer at ~5A for £50 or under?

      The Aldi AutoXs charger I reviewed last week (see video for Model number) is a good bet for lead acid support maintenance. It wont keep it fully topped up during very cold weather as it has no temperature compensation. However it will protect the battery and maintain the terminal voltage well away from the sulphation zone. They may still have some left at Aldi.

    Nice video, I have been using this charger for about 3 years out of my service vehicle to charge machines including 24v machines. It works very well for me, except the auto voltage sensing cant be manually set to 12 or 24, so Im going to upgrade to a telwin touring type.
    It also runs my 12v fridge in my shed hooked in parellel to a jumpstarter. I leave it there for months at a time. 👍

      Mine is still working too. They come to the UK with various levels of filtering and protection installed. Some have all others have none. I wouldn't use mine to do battery maintenance as the termination f charge voltage isn't very accurate. But agreed if you have a parasitic load then anything is better than letting the battery to get to a very low state of charge.

    Having watched this video a few days back, I bought the latest version of this, It's 12v/10amp - 24v/5amp, model RJ-C121001A. The front panel is almost identical, but it has an additional mode between AGM/GEL and Motorcycle, it says WET under a small picture of a battery(?!). I've just charged a 90Ah lead acid battery that measured 12.3v when free standing on the STD mode. It certainly faster than the 6amp Maypole smart charger it's replaced, but I'm not inclined to leave it connected after it hits Full because I'm not clear in my mind about how it maintains the battery fully charged until I want to use it. Also, I was pleased to see my neighbour who has a pacemaker walking about this morning, clearly he was spared death by RFI :-D

    • @razenby
      @razenby  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Mark, I haven't seen that model. Presumably they beefed it up squeezing more power out. Hopefully they haven't screwed what reliability it has. Your battery manufacturer would recommend a ~4 amp (ish) is charge current. Bigger currents save time but if charging a near flat battery with a low state of charge , pumping in too many amps during the early stages of the bulk charge phase is not ideal. For a healthy Lead-Acid battery ad acid self discharge is very slow. If you have no parasitic drain (battery disconnected or a switched load - not a vehicle with alarm and central locking etc.) then it is far better to periodically charge the battery say every 3 of 4 months disconnecting the battery between charges. Plus if you leave your charger powered up then a mains transient will come along and destroy it. They don't have adequate protection because they simply aren't designed for UK mains voltages where it can often get as high as 260V RMS instead of the piddly European 220-230V...

    I just bought one of these chargers from ebay. After getting it out of the box I noticed it had something rattling inside the case. Before powering it on I opened the case up to see what was loose inside.
    Turns out there was some bits of plastic loose in there and after looking at the board inside I couldn't see anything broken in there.
    First thing I looked at was if it had the suppression chokes on the supply and it does. The wiring they use for the supply in and DC out are as small as you can get.
    Just as you said in the video they didn't bother to crimp the croc clips on properly.

    • @razenby
      @razenby  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello, good question. For a 12V battery that has been allowed to languish with its terminal voltage of less than 11.8 is probably a gonner. Some good can be done on larger supply and stationary batteries but for car starting batteries no. For slightly ailing batteries then desuplhation or repair may help. This charger has a reasonable repair mode and uses the same pulsing Repair/recond scheme scheme as the NOCO Genius range. Check the open voltage terminal voltage on your boat batteries and see what state they are in at the moment. I would not recommend this charger to be used for a resuscitation attempt as it piles straight in there very early with as much current as possible. This will damage the remaining active areas of the plates before any suplhate is removed. If your terminal voltage has dropped then don't do an 8A charge straight away. If you use this then try the repair mode to get the voltage one the pates up to a point where you can charge.( ~10.4 to 11V).

      @@razenby Thank you for your response. I have n old Battery Minder branded charger that does a desulfate but it only charges at .75 amps. I've been using it for years connected to my tractor battery because it sits for years at a time. This seems to work very well at maintaining the battery. The current battery in the tractor us 6 years old and it's probably only been run for 3 to 5 hours in that time. But it starts up every time when I need to use it. I wonder if this might be a better choice in trying to desulfate my existing boat batteries..
      I really only wanted this unit to use to desulfate (repair), not to use as a charger. If it's only use for repair, and if I went with their 5amp charger, would that work better than the one you tested?

Problem is some things are stored in places without power... so I really need something for desultification, so when something is pulled out of storage, I can try and save the battery before recharging.

The three NOCO chargers have been running for over 9 years of 24/7 battery support without any charger failure. If you dont look after your batterries and want to squeeze an extra 6 months out of an ailing battery then the CTEK is the best tool but don't leave it connected to the power or subject to operation where the dew point can be crossed. i.e. With the CTEK do the task then unplug ans store in a dry place.

    Can I use the motorcycle mode to trickle charge a large car battery through winter?

    • @razenby
      @razenby  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not necessary, the smart charger cuts the charge when the battery is fully charged and then cuts back in with charge if the terminal voltage drops to low. If the battery is connected to the vehicle then the vehicle may exert a parasitic drain to power stuff like alarms. A goo full charged battery will happily sit for six months without damage. In some situations a maintenance charger might do more harm than good. In addition charging/maintaining whilst the battery is connected to the vehicle electrical system may confuse some smart chargers into maintaining the charge voltage too high for too long. So disconnect the battery if you can. The only thing with this charger in the video is that after six months when you go back it is unlikely to still be working. A couple of mains transients fries the power supply as there is virtually no built in protection.

    Hello, thanks for this video. May you recommend me a charger that is safe. Im not interested in fast charging. So Im not looking for hig amperage. 4 amps is ok for me. I have seen NOCO, Schumacher, Optima, Energizer but according to Amazon reviews they all overcharge batteries and make them boil and fail to detect 14.8 volts peak voltage (for flooded batts). Im interested in good quality that means SAFE charging. Thanks a lot!!

      @razenby  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't believe the reviews on Amazon about boiling or overcharging. Whenever you dig deeper they are always wrong. A little knowledge is a very bad thing. I have many chargers both expensive and cheap including Bosch, Optimate, NOCO, CTEK etc. On My V8 jaguar I use a NOCO Genius II to support the battery. Why ? because the CTEKS would blow up after a few months, I had two under warranty and they blew up, The NOCO genius 2 has been on duty supporting the battery for over 2 years 24/7. I say to everyone if you use your car for short journeys then you need to do a periodical float / absorption charge. If you VRLA starter battery is failing then there are no magic bullets so just replace it else it will let you down.

    10:56 is not the error, but rather a voltage drop through the wires (due to the current flow). More current, more voltage drop. I assume that charger's microprocessor measures voltage on the charger's output, not on the alligator clips. Also, absolute maximum should be 14.4 volts, not 15 volts, never!
    EDIT: Crude or minimalistic car battery charger contains only a transformer and one diode as a rectifier. That's what is called minimalistic, and it was working flawlessly many years prior modern electronic chargers.

    • @razenby
      @razenby  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I The voltages are monitored at the battery crocodile clips and the error is steady at just a couple of hundred milliamps of current in the charge cables. i.e low current=low voltage drop.
      1. The charger micrcontroller knows the a voltage and current values therefore it could easily calculate a fairly accurate offset to the displayed value in order to compensate for cable resistance.
      2. The accuracy of the A to D converter is limited by resolution, offset accuracy and the tolerances of components in the signal conditioning components. The theoretical accuracy matches the performance pretty well. See the calculations are in one of the NOCO vids.

    the .3 volt difference is caused by the resistance in the wires the charger is reading the Voltage from the circuit inside , your DVM is reading the voltage at the end of the Charging wires Which has resistance . the longer the wire the higher the resistance . One thing i Do is replace the China Made Electrolytic Capacitors in the charger with Good High Quality Low Impedance Capacitors Like Nichicon UHE

    • @razenby
      @razenby  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You overlooked the indicated voltage is is wrong at termination when about only 70mA charge current is flowing. If you are correct then the calculated resistance of the leads must turns be over 4 ohms. Confusing isn't it?? The charger knows the resistance of the leads and it knows the current flowing so can easily calculate the offset and compensate the display and transition / cut-off voltages. The real issue is the accuracy (resolution) of the cheap Micro's Analogue to digital converter and the tolerance of the divider chain resistors that sense the voltage.. The bit error and best theoretical accuracy is calculated in another video in this channel.

      These chargers don't have very accurate voltage measurement. The accuracy (tolerance) of the network of components is 1% per part and the A to D is only accurate as the micros internal voltage measurement. Add to that potential shifts on the 0V rail and switching noise. They are all over the place. For a quick charge then it isn't a problem as there is a school of thought ( as yet unproven) that a slight overcharge for a brief period helps keep the plates clean. - It will etch the +vE electrode very slightly but is thought to help to reduce build up of sulfate on the electrodes.

    Wow. Haven't seen anything this bad before. FCC logo on box. Yeah. Sure. What's the FCC ID haha. These products circumvent regulations pretty easily. Even if the product becomes banned for import, there are lots of alternate brands and labels that these kinds of things can be sold as. That mains fuse is the smallest fuse I've ever seen. Almost no glass.. barely meets minimum creepage distance. I'm sure it was some fraction of a cent cheaper. These products rely on volume to make a profit.. taking out all input filtering would raise margins substantially. Did you purchase this in a retail outlet, or was it ordered online? Penalties when it comes to retail sales of products with falsified compliance can be severe.

      It is really bad. I bought it from a UK importer on Amazon. Shipped from the UK. There is probably about $1.20 US worth of parts missing at Chinese internal market prices. I filed a report with the UK trading standards agency this morning. Anything seems to be acceptable in pursuit of profit.

      Missing out $1.20 of parts is not acceptable. Penny pinching bstards. Just sell it for 1.20 more.

    What if this was connected to a power conditioner?

    • @razenby
      @razenby  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If there are filter if the conditioner then it would help. The mains lead would still radiate badly but it would not enter the mains supply wiring..

    Bloody hell! I hope the Russians don't see this or they'll be using them to jam communications in Ukraine. Just bought one of these as well. I noticed in the comments on Amazon before I bought it that someone complained that his neighbours wi-fi stopped working when he was using it, but it still had 4.5 stars out of 5 in the reviews.

    • @razenby
      @razenby  ปีที่แล้ว

      LOL. It is quite an achievement to jam WIFI. To get ~2GHz noise from 50 Khz switch mode an achievement... It ranks up there the baddest crap I have seen. When the Radio Communication Agency was around the importer would be in court. With no enforcement of basic safety rules , the UK is just a dumping ground for fallaciously marked CE marked products .

      I am using the same charger and I have no idea what you guys are on about, my wifi works, my TV works (and charger is plugged into same socket) whilst I am typing it's charging my W164 ML AGM battery fine. And once full, I will use repair mode and pulse charge. Did my motorbike battery las night, same method, charge to 100 and then put into repair mode until it shut itself off. Jobs a good un.

      Good call. Yes, too cheap. If they had just spent another couple of dollars on design and components then it would be a good thing. The whole world suffers as long as people keep consuming crap and throwing it away and making more crap for the land-fill. Thanks for watching.

      @@razenby Could have been worse... the whole thing could have been sealed (ie the CTEKs or the NOCOs) so that these modifications can't be done easily. At least with this type of design, modifications can be done.
