The local way for eating food is to eat the side dishes with your rice. One of the reason for this is that the side dishes might be a bit too salty/spicy etc when eaten separately. The rice will balance it out. Other than that there is no rule. Eat as you like. You can mix all the side dishes(common when eating nasi padang) or you eat the side dishes individually(again with the rice).

nasi campur means mixed rice...so for me the best way to eat it is to mix it all up n then eat it...=D

Nasi campur=mixed rice. You should take some rice+side dish on your spoon (not fork). Or you could simply mix it all up & enjoy.

There are several variations of nasi campur in Indonesia. In Jakarta, ‘nasi campur’ could mean just a lot of things put in one plate. It could also mean pork nasi campur and the sellers are usually Indonesian Chinese. For pork nasi campur, you can see the roasted pork hanging on display.

I don't know if you guys are still in Bali... if you're then try a Balinese signature dish "Babi Guling"... there are a lot of babi guling restaurants in there... some of the best are "Pak Malen" and "Selingsing" which very popular with locals... also one of my favorite restaurant in there "Naughty Nuri's"... their Pork Ribs bbq is simply to die for...

if you go to bali, you should eat mak beng.. its delissshh.. its a fish dish.. which is made in soup and also fried.. i always eat there everytime i go to bali

hahaha... you can eat it the way you like, but the general rule is, a 'proper' way is when the rice and all the surrounding dishes, the tofu, tempe, chicken, got eaten till the last bite the same time. Except for sambals of course.
