how is it that this comment says that it was posted two days ago, when this video came out like half an hour ago only. the first reply to this comment also says 2 days ago, but all the rest do not. Also someone else replied saying that they see the same thing, so it's not just me, lmao
Thanks for explaining the reason the ground dome was moving back and forth! I assumed that some of the energy from the discharges was just being converted to kinetic energy, but I'm glad it was clarified and I was educated!
You are like old time professor to me, Sir. Over the past few... several years, you have taught me so much. Thank you for your videos, and keep on making these amazing educational videos. Sincerely, in my MadLab, I sort of grew up watching your content. I am very grateful for your channel. If you inspire me, then think of how many you have inspired. Good work, fellow electro homie... hahaha! Sincerely, MadDoctor Whitson
This video was really amazing. Those repeated ouch sounds just show your dedication to science and to your viewers! Great work Sir! Keep up the great work. Love from India!
I had a science teacher show us one of these once and he did the cupcake wrapper thing but slightly differently. He used larger, tin wrappers and stacked them up on top of the orb before turning it on. They then got thrown off one at a time from top to bottom. It was especially cool because the rhythm was very consistent, just like those arcs in the video.
It's super painful because the inside if your nose is really conductive and has a lot of smell sensors. So your brain freaks out when the electricity flows through.
Yes, the Nobel prize of electrocution. Benjamin Franklin, a Russian president and marine engineer should receive one in 1800, but he died by his last electrocution before he gets the prize.
André Dal Molin Cody's lab is by far the best TH-cam channel and a few thousand miles away from him, Electroboom is standing there in the rain with the second best channel
this is my favorite video so far! so glad I subscribed to this channel, the part at 6:00 is an awesome example of the fundamental concept behind Nikola Tesla's last project: Wardenclyffe Tower, when he powered it, the nearby horses were driven into a frenzy due to the iron in their shoes picking up the charge... a sad day for Mr. Tesla indeed.
So intresting. Don't need to.go to college or university to learn how electric works I just watch your videos. I start my job tomorrow as head electrician in my local nuclear power plant. Thanks Mehdi 👍
Dear Electroboom I would like you to explain something to me. You need around 20.000 Volts per centimetre and a lightning can obtain more than 10.000.000 Volts. But how is it possible that the lightning arks into the earth when 10.000.000/20.000 equals only 5 meters.
A very good question- hope he answers with a video actually, I would guess it has to do with that being a calculation used more for something like a spark gap which is simplified for typical conditions.
Sir. I used to love using the Van Der Graf with students. Always great fun. I live in China and can buy a Van Der Graf generator online for 120$. Super cheap. I am tempted to get one and zap my students at our langage centre. Anyway, your video will definitely get students motivated to learn. Great work
Great stuff man! Loved the hair test with ElectroCute. That was a lot of very angry electrons running as fast as they could from the scene of some unspecified electrocrime.
This dude is low key a genius. I came in search of Van De Graaf generator for my physics assignment, not gonna lie i had a good laugh and actually learned something.
So the flying cups experiment works because, when upside down, the cups have an inner cavity (which gets pushed upwards by the electron wind). Putting the cups flat side down will have the cup in more of a V shape, in which the electron wind hits the sides which provides a negative lift, pushing it towards the ball. This is in addition to your explanation. Great video
2:55 Calling out the old incorrect "It's the current, not the volts, that kills you" In reality, it's the Energy= Volts X Current X Time. Van De Graaffs are safe because the time value is extremely low. Think of it as being hit with a water balloon. Even though they can pack what feels like a wallop, they have a very finite amount of energy they can deliver at any given time, limited by the maximum charge that can be stored on the sphere before it starts bleeding off by ionizing the air. Compare this to being hit with a firehouse- like touching a high voltage electrical line, where the time value is unlimited since the supply of charge is unlimited.
It isn't really energy either, it's more complicated than that. For example, you can tolerate 1mA indefinitely, but 1A for 10 seconds will fry you. Of course time matters a lot, 50A for 1mcs won't harm you, but it's not quite as simple as V*I*T.

I might be wrong, but i think it's because humidity and water particles can provide a better path to the ground.
Curious to the answer too
+KFC_Manager that may explain the weird paths that the lightning takes to the ground, otherwise it would be a boring pseudo-straight line
Things behave differently at these voltages.
The 20000 V/cm rule is only at relatively low voltages helpful.
