The big wheels are off a mccormick deering soil pulverizer. Build back in 1926.

1 7/8 solid steel round bar. The place I get my steel from has them. Try to find them as used steel if you can, as they are heavy and get pricy .

Do the wheels somehow fasten to the shaft?

The axle shaft spins in the bearings, and each wheel spins on the axle. I think this helps from breaking a wheel if you hit a rock or are some really uneven ground.
