Old video, but thank you for tipping the artnetominator - I'm light techie of small student theatre group with Ambitious Plans, including wireless esp32 light nodes running wled and raspberry pi 2 as dmx node. All controlled over artnet. I have ..some problems, which relates to how much is happening, so to be able to see the packet rates etc hopefully gets me to the root problem. One of the problems is two QMAXZ QS250S moving heads which are super sensitive to DMX clock going out of sync thanks to cheapest-possible FTDI DMX usb-interface, which means it's the rpi's cpu which is handling the DMX clock, and causing problems when there's too much traffic on the line. And before you ask why we have moving heads in theatre, we use the space very creatively so being able to reliably and consistently re-align lights mid-play has been major improvement. I wish we could afford MA equipment. I'm running shows with open source software called DMXControl, which is very annoying when there starts to be too many moving parts and the workflow is inefficient (like presets randomly becoming cursed: they work in cues but if you edit it, you can't save anymore). I might just save up and buy MA3 command wing for myself and use that, and buy cheap artnet nodes which are actually made for that purpose and not some random rpi with FTDI DMX dongle.
Probably you will see this comment (first ones). I like a lot of your work, I have learned many things with the Crash Course, waiting for the next one. And the tips for constructing Macros are the best thing! Thank you for what you have done, and see you at Prolight next year!
Keep up the hard work man! I'd love to see a video where you explain how you incorporate sr-112 distripalyzer into you systems! Maybe talk about what exactly it does and the signal path for how the sr-112 is incorporated...
You can trick the thing into thinking that it is connected to the real hardware console. There are videos on the internet, it unlocks 8k parameters. I am using that to control my D.I.Y lights and it works just fine. You need one of the older versions of MA2 ONPC to do that. If you are connected to network just add console in setup and give it the IP of you'r computer (the local one), it needs to start at 2.x.x.x or 10.x.x.x (you have to setup router properly), also node IP must start at 2 or 10, then you press PLEASE (ENTER) and the thing will turn green for while and connection will fail, but even when it attempts connection and fail after than it gonna unlock parameters (you need to repeat this thing when you restart the MA2ONPC software).
Can you make a video on how to operate garandma2 live during a show. I'm trying to find a way to be able to chose my positions, sequences and colors before a drop and having a go button to put everything live at the same time. I'm very new to MA and it would be amazing if you could show us how you operate MA yourself during a show. Thank you.
A Few things from a part time network admin. ArtNet works on almost every network type. MA might be restricting Class A 2.x.x.x/10.x.x.x -> 10.x.x.x is more apreceable. Because it gets automatically blocked by routers, where 2.x.x.x can get output to the internet. Class B And Class C ArtNet defaults are calculated on the 2.x.x.x Class C Network, but are not limited to this network. I can find no place in the specification, where other network types are depreceated The Specification states: "Products implementing Art-Net should default to the Primary IP address of 2.?.?.?" On top of that the specification says, that all devices which can generate and have ArtNet Output enabled, shall send a request every 2.5 to 3 seconds to detect any ArtNet devices. If you use ArtNet and use broadcast you should also check, if your switch has any "Network protection" which blocks broadcast outputs. The console also seems to check which IP is lower and uses that network port for ArtNet Output.
Great vid! Thanks so much! Wondering if you have any book/reading recommendations on learning the backend of lighting. DMX, ArtNet, MAnet, etc. I'm wanting to learn how everything works from console to fixture. Slowly getting through the manual and I'll be sure to check out those articles.
If I run a MA2 RPU as the master console will it allow me to program with onpc as a slave and expand out the parameters up to how many I have access to with the RPU and however many NPUs I have hooked up? If I recall correctly you can run an onpc as a backup for any console and that consoles total paramaters become available.
Can you please do a tutorial on RB-DMX which is recordbox DJs lighting software and hardware. Or anything similar for Djs for a quick light show using only their pc and DMX box.
Can you make a video of you playing on event? Show what you do, what you click, how does it looks like. Or play something on ma2 on pc with visualisation.
Great video! I run a venue with a 5 universe house system. Our internal control works just fine (SACN or Art-Net) but when MA2's come though and connect to our network we get some complaints about very slow Art-Net / SACN control. Lights will move in slow motion and "catch up" to their control. Any idea what causes this?
Everything should sync to the console, so if you any hardware (such as an art net node) running on a different refresh rate, it can result in lag/inconsistencies.
Hey Christian, which specs does your PC have, where you run Capture? I often got Problems runing it, if blinders go to full or many movinglights are on. But my pc isnt Bad .
Do you know anything DMX interface that I can use to operate my GrandMa on PC without having the command wing? Also for Avolite on PC, which one can I use without having the Avolite dongle?
Great video as always Christian! I really hate to correct you, but you can only get 2048 parameters in an onpc system, no matter the hardware, cheap bastards😄

So I have a question. Any particular reason you prefer Artnet over sACN?
Wow that rig in previs looks beautiful! You should use it for something! 😈
Great thanks! Best wishes to you!

It's my favorite lighting dude. Thanks Christian
Edit: can you use the artnetominator software or Avolites consoles?
Yes you can, it just detects ArtNet on the network regardless of the source :)
@@Lamarama ah okay, if I may ask how do you set it up. I'm a noob at this stuff
Hey men great job i love your videos.. I would like to ask how did you connect capture with your console.??
What a problem ???

Can MA2onPC send Art-Net(Or sACN) to a visualizer running on the same PC? Or would it require unlocked parameters?

Hey Christian, which specs does your PC have, where you run Capture? I often got Problems runing it, if blinders go to full or many movinglights are on. But my pc isnt Bad .
hey hi, thank you for the video ,can u make a live artnet setup in step by step process ma2 console
Do you still need to unlock parameters for use artnet with Capture? (or similar)
That would be outputting outside of MA, which requires parameters. So yes.
Do you know anything DMX interface that I can use to operate my GrandMa on PC without having the command wing?
Also for Avolite on PC, which one can I use without having the Avolite dongle?
But artnet or sACN? I am using sACN myzelf but see artnet a lot at venues I work at
ArtNet is more recognized but sACN is also great. And you don't have to deal with IP-settings with sACN :)
I dont case about doing ip addressing as I do an IT education, but was just curious why eveyone is using artnet as sACN is a newer protocol
@@DJYorlin ArtNet 4 is newer and probably better. I have not all the details my self tho.
How to change granted yes?
Awesome Lighting Board, i have a few Questions but want to chat on a different platform whenever you not busy
what do I have to set to connect two nodes?
Can I unlock ma on pc parameters through only ma fader wing? Or can I run a show using output of ma fader wing with running ma on pc?
If it is an onpc fader wing, yes. If it is a fader wing extension for consoles, no.
@@christianjackson Ok. Thankyou for your information.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure you can ONLY output artnet from port 2 on a console? :)
Sadly not. If you screw up your IP ranges for ethernet port 1 you'll get artnet out there :)
@@AlexHughesLX ah good to know!
hi, please make subtitles on TH-cam, you are watched all over the world, even in Russia)))
more vids plz
the problem might be between the chair and console? whats my coffee got to do with artnet?....
hi. and what if i'm a slave in session?
then no artnet (or any network protocols) will be output from that station. Only the master.
Lol, I always call it Artnet TERMINATOR! #skynet
Nice video!But I need subtitle :(
thats why i use chamsys
Why?
@@bezumny because the chamsys system unlock parameters from software to the real world from 35 dollars for one universe.

I was wrong, so I have to correct my self. If I ad a node or an NPU, of course I can get 4096 parameters😅
Need sub..
