D D, remembering the hadith number doesn't mean much. The first hadith Dr Zakir quoted, he said a man asked the prophet about qiyaamul laiyl and the prophet said pray 2. 2, 2, 2, and so on and it you fear dawn is coming pray ONE. but his 2nd hadith, Dr Zakir said Aisha RA said he prayed 12 total 8 been qiyaamul Layla and e for witr. The first hadith Zakir said 1 fir witr and the 2nd hadith he said 3 for witr. Dr Zakir is a scholar of comparative religion but a faqih or a Muslim jurist. Let's be careful. All the 4 schools agreed on this. Ibn Taymeyah in his"majmooah fatawa" said the same. Ibn Qudama in his "Al-mugni" said the same.

No bro , your comment is wrong , you cant leave at eight rakaat.
Because if you will leave daily at 8 and other at 20 , then you would not be listening full quran , about half part of quran will left incompleted for you.
THE MEANING OF HADITHS IN THIS VIDEO IS THAT YOU CAN PRACTICE DAILY 8 OR 10 OR 20 OR 36 RAKATS , BUT YOU CANT LEAVE IN BETWEEN ,YOU HAVE TO COMPLETE WITH OTHERS.
THE MEANING OF HADITHS IS THAT TOTAL RAKAAT CAN BE CHANGED , BUT FOR ALL PEOPLE WHO ARE PRACTICING BEHIND THE SAME IMAM , THEN ALL PEOPLE AND IMAM WILL CONPLETE TOGETHER , BUT NO. OF RAKAAT FOR ALL WILL BE SAME.

Mi Khan what about sahih Bukhari, book of taraweeh prayer, hadith no: 2013

Notice how Imam Bukhari proves that Tahajjud & Taraweeh are SEPARATE prayers by giving each one a separate Chapter Heading. The Taraweeh Chapter begins with those hadith specif to Taraweeh but at the end, he brings in the same hadith of Aisha (ra) from the Tahajjud Chapter to show that Tahajud is also done in Ramdhan after the Taraweeh.
Because Tahajjud is done OUTSIDE Ramadhan as well as IN Ramadhan.

Asna - that urdu translation is not accurate. This is the SAME hadith about performing Tahajjud in Ramadhan and outside Ramadhan.
To undertsand why Imam Bukhari repeats it here in the Book of Tarawih, one needs to understand his methodology of Chapter Headings.
He calls this Chapter : باب فَضْلِ مَنْ قَامَ رَمَضَانَ- 'Benefits of Standing in Ramadhan'
So he first mentions the ahadith about Tarawih then he repeats the Hadith of 11 rakats as the last one in this Chapter to indicate that in Ramadhan, the Sahaba read Tarawih first then they would go to sleep for a bit then wake up to perform 8 rakats Tahajjud followed by 3 Witr.
And this is what has been done for over 1400 years at Makkah & Madinah & Aqsa and all over the muslim world.
The Sahih of imam Muslim is much clearer about this as he separates the Tahajjud hadiths from the Tarawih ahadith and his Chapter 'The Standing in Ramadhan which is called Tarawih' does NOT include the hadith of Aisha (ra) which says that he performed 11 rakats.

@Zaid Khan The fact is there is no Taraveeh Prayer. Qiyam-ul-layl is the termed as Taraveeh which is basically 11 rakah. The 8 nafl and 3 vitr. Nafl can be more than 8 as well, 20, 30, 40, 50..... infinity. Brainless people can't understand this.

Tarawih prayers are prayed in pairs of two and can be prayed with at least twenty raka‘āts according to the Hanafi and Shafi'i schools of Sunni Islam. A break is taken after every 4(2+2) raka‘āt. This prayer is performed only during Ramadan of the Islamic calendar, after salat of Isha. Tarawih prayers begin from the first Moon-sighted evening (start) to second Moon-sighted evening (last day of Ramadan). Sunni Muslims believe it is customary to attempt a khatm ("complete recitation" of the Quran) as one of the religious observances of Ramadan, by reciting at least one juz' per night in tarawih. Tarawih prayers are considered optional (Sunnah), not obligatory

Both the quoted Hadeeth are from the Book of TAHAJUD, which means Qayyam ul Lail is referring to Tahjjud not Taraweeh plus the hadeeth also says "Ghaira Ramadhan" meaning outside Ramadhan, Nabi sa also prayed 8 Rakaats and 3 Witr, which is also referring to Tahajjud.
If Taraweeh was 8 Rakat then it should have been named Taraweehataan meaning 2 breaks as Taraweeh means BREAK or REST we rest after 4 Rakaats in Taraweeh.
No one knows how many Taraweeh Nabi sa prayed in those 3 days and stopped.
Omar ra. is the best person to know so he started 20 Rakaats!
Ijmah of Sahab has always been 20.

Otherwise why would the Propher sa. pray same rakats in other months aswell? And why would Prophet sa. be afraid that Allah would enjoyn it on you and you will not be able to carryon cos everyone knew Qayamulail was not enjoined on muslims anyway. 11 rakats are Qayamulail on top of 20 rakaat of taravee.

The sahabah.....more specifically the man who the Prophet(saw) said that if their were to be a Prophet after me it would be this man and that was Umar(ra).
All of the congregational Salah being performed was 20 rakat minimum, this has been testified to by all of the Scholars.
      Imam Tirmidhi said:
"Umar, Ali as well as other Companions (Allah be pleased with them all) and Sufyan al-Thauri, Ibn al-Mubarak and Imam al-Shafi'i (Allah's mercy be upon them), all believed in 20 rak'ahs of taraweeh, and Imam Shafi'i has stated that he had seen the people of Makkah saying 20 rak'ahs (see Sunan al-Tirmidhi, vol.1, pg. 99).
Imam Malik ibn Anas (d. 179 AH; Rahimahullah)
It was written in the most authentic book on Maliki Fiqh, al-Mudawwanah (vol.1, pg. 193-94), by Qadi Sahnoon (Rahimahullah):
"Ibn al-Qasim said, 'The rak'ahs (of taraweeh) with witr are 39.' Imam Malik said, 'This is what the people have agreed upon from amongst the predecessors, and the people have not stopped doing it.'"
Hafiz Ibn Humam (d. 861/1457; Rahimahullah)
Allamah Ibn Humam asserts that it has been established from genuine authority that the Companions and their Successors (tabi'in) used to say twenty rak'ahs of taraweeh during the auspicious time of Umar (Allah be pleased with him); this authority of Yazid ibn Ruman has been reported from Sa'ib ibn Yazid that, 'during Umar's auspicious time we used to say twenty rak'ahs.' The genuineness of this authority has been verified by Imam Nawawi in the synopsis (see Fath al-Qadir, vol.1, pg. 407 and Nasb-ur-Rayah, vol.1, pg. 294, by Hafiz al-Zaylai). Hafiz Ibn Humam also said in Fath al-Qadir (vol.1, pg. 470):
"At last unanimity was formed on 20 rak'ahs of prayer and this alone is in succession." This last statement has also been said in similar words by Ibn Taymiyya in his Minhaj us-Sunnah (vol.2, pg. 224).
Imam Ata ibn Abi Rabah (Rahimahullah)
The august successor (Tabi'in) and Mufti of Makkah in his time said:
"I have seen the Companions, and other people in Makkah saying 23 rak'ahs, including the witr."
This report is Hasan (good). (see Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, pg. 406, Fath al-Bari, vol.4, pg. 219, of Hafiz Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, Qiyam ul-Layl, pg. 91, by Imam Ibn Nasr al-Marwazi)

Qiam al Layl means the standing of the night. You can pray either in congregation or alone, but must make the recitation loooong. Prophet saw instructed to pray two by two until you fear the dawn is near and then pray an ofd number (1 or 3 pr 5 or 7 or 9 or 11 rakah witr). Prophet saw used to pray 8 looong rakah's and three times in his lifetime he prayed in congregation. But, there is narrations of Sahabas and Tabeyis praying 20 rakahs, 36 rakahs too. Imam Abu Hanifa, Imam Shafeyi and Imam Ahmad used to pray 20 rakahs while Imam Malik favoured 36 rakahs. Now,
    1. There is no problem praying 8, 20, 36 or any other Rakahs, but you should pray witr salah at the end.
    2. If you are praying in congregation FINISH WITH THE IMAM! Because, whomever prays until the imam pray gets the reward of praying whole night. This is regardless of how many rakahs the imam prays.
    3. If you wish to pray more after the imam finishes, if he offered witr at the end you can either stand up and pray one nore rakahs to make it even so that you keep your last night prayer witr OR you can finish with the imam and continue two by two, BUT DO NOT PRAY WITR TWICE.
    4. Since prophet saw didn't specify any numbers for the qiam Al Layl let's not make it an issue. It's a scholarly consensus and you can follow whatever opinion you feel best BUT PLEASE DON'T MAKE FITNAH.
May Allah make the ummah united under the flag of Islam, stronger and understanding. May Allah give is victory over the Shayatin and disbelievers.
    Jazakallahu Khairan.

Taraweeh is not mentioned in Quraan anywhere. Taraweeh is mentioned only in Ahadith. Taraweeh is read only in Ramadan, Tahajjud is for the whole year. We should separate taraweeh from tahajjud because Tahajjud is prayed in the last part of the night by definition n taraweeh is prayed right after Isha.
The Sunnah of Prophet pbuh is proved in sahih hadith, book of Tahajjud, volume 1, hadith number 1129 that he prayed on the 23rd night, 25th night, 27th night with jamaat and on the 28th right after Isha he went to his chamber and people were waiting for him outside so that they could pray in jamaat again. Prophet pbuh did not come out till fajr and after fajr he announced that he was aware of people waiting for him outside his chamber but though (he loved the act of praying in jamaat) "mentioned by the scholars", he was scared that Allah would make taraweeh compulsory on the ummah. This would burden the ummah. From this we know that praying taraweeh is sunnah of Prophet pbuh and praying in jamaat is also the sunnah of Prophet pbuh.
Now the 4 khalifa have been with Prophet pbuh from the time of starting of Prophethood till the end, so they were aware of all his practices and were with the Prophet pbuh in almost all times.
Umar rad in his khilafat United everyone to pray taraweeh behind one imaam for unity n pray throughout the month, not just few days.
Praying taraweeh in jamaat throughout the month is sunnah of Umar rad, also asking Kaab rad to complete the Quran in the taraweeh is also Sunnah of Umar rad who has seen Prophet pbuh very closely.
Don't want to argue, just putting these few points ahead.

When you say majority ulema and scholars, what's the difference between the both? From my layman thinking they both are the same. Correct me if I'm wrong.
And no, it is not my understanding. It is the understanding of millions of ulema who have given many speeches on this topic.

Brothers who pray 8 rakaats in the mosques where 20 is performed, surely there is no sin in performing 8, but you must understand you will not get the reward equal to the people who are performing 20. First of all because you're praying less time and second of all, you're not completing the Quran in the taraweehs.
The better is to perform all 20, as Muslims it shouldn't bother us to struggle a little bit more just in Ramadan which is the month of blessings.
May Allah reduce our laziness in the month of Ramadan. Ameen.

It grieves us deeply that we find in the Muslim ummah a group which differs concerning matters in which differences of opinion are acceptable, and they take these differences as a means to cause division. Differences within the ummah existed at the time of the Sahaabah, yet they remained united. The youth in particular and to all those who are committed to Islam must remain united, because they have enemies who are laying in wait.

The way I look at it is, why are people so concerned over how many rakat instead they don’t talk or worry about the 5 daily prayers.
Yes all Masjid are full all over the world for the 30 days, EId day and Fridays but what happens after that.
1, 2 or may be 3 lines in the masjid which is a sad reality.
No wonder you can tell how and why it’s out of 1000, 999 to the hell fire.
I mean some Masjid don’t even have Fajr prayers as no one turns up.
So come on guys no more talking on how many rakat which is not even farhd, rather focus on the 5 daily prayers as if you miss one we all know it’s a deadly sin and a deadly punishment.
May Allah guide us all to the straight path!

Nobody has a right to label or judge others IF someone prays 8 fine some pray 20 fine just let it be coz you don’t know the quality of their ebadah. No more emphasis on rituals let’s understand the philosophy and rulings behind it all.
