It's posters falling off the walls while your head hangs off the bed Of dirty sheets that once were white but now are stained instead It's flying down a path through Hyde Park with a bottle tucked under each arm All sitting on the floor in a plastic corridor staring hard And talking rationally and with clarity But uncontrollably And Sophie says, isn't it sad that you can't discuss what dying was like with your friends And Sophie says, won't it be annoying when they're all crying and you're just dead It's waking up at 5 to 5 to catch a bus from town to backward town All slipping and sliding down a muddy hill, just on your arse Stuck halfway between complete hysterics and a moan And Sophie says, I want to be married with children coming out my ears, I want a high powered job And Sophie says, I want a funny man but only if you can be mates with him too I hope the Guardian take me regardless of my apathy I want to come in and write and criticise, but I just can't be arsed right now It's 4 hours in the same position, moving your head and your foot and your arm That is aching from turning and troughing, barely moving You're either at 90 or you're practically parked And Sophie says, I want to mourn my mother on a wrought iron balcony in Paris And Sophie says, in each hand a glass of wine and a cigarette will accompany me And I will smoke for her, even though she's not dead and I don't smoke Ignoring the messages on the packets warning me the way you'll choke, With Après Moi simply pumping out the stereo into the distance of stare, Ignoring sympathetic messages I'll take a glug of red or white, I won't care And as I puff away under the evening light, I'll flick back my blonde hair, Whilst rubbing my poor grieving feet, we'll sit, my latest beautiful Pierre And Sophie says, that's for later, now I just wanna spend time with my friends.
@@bastillebelgium It has to rhyme with 'care' so I'm thinking 'of stare' or upstair. And I hear Pierre, but the sentence doesn't make sense. 'We'll sit and my latest beautiful Pierre'
@@oatsinthewaves I like the "distance of stare". Regarding "Pierre", I'm not sure, I think it could either be: "we'll sit, my latest beautiful Pierre" (without "and") - addressing Sophie or the listener as "Pierre". Or it could be "pier": "we'll sit on my latest beautiful pier", but that doesn't make much sense. Or perhaps it's "pieds" which is French for "feet" and would refer to the "grieving feet" from the same line. But I think that's a stretch. Also, I'm pretty sure "warning me where you'll choke" should be "warning me the way you'll choke"
@@abovethegrass Do you think it's 'comment and write' rather than 'come in', I can hear both. I think the Après Moi is a reference to Regina Spektor's song, which is about revolutions in France and Russia. And the Pierre may be a reference to War and Peace. And I'm starting to think he named the band Bastille for more reasons than just because it's his birthday...
@@oatsinthewaves "comment" would make sense, true. But I would expect to hear the "t" and I don't. It's hard to tell. I think you may be onto something with War and Peace. Why "latest", though? I've not read it, maybe there's some hidden reference there.
@@oatsinthewaves It must be Regina Spektor's Après Moi, yeah. And speaking of that, I'm not sure it's "simply pumping". I hear an additional syllable there. Something like "cynically", but not that.
0verjoyed here. Had this on repeat for so long now lol I absolutely love these lyrics, Dan and Sophie still being friends for all these years makes my heart happy.
It is so beautiful! That line about Hyde Park hit me hard knowing that I haven’t gotten to spend the sunny days in Leeds since Corona hit. I wanted to spend time with my dearest friends laying on the grass between lectures. This song is emotional to me, thanks for sharing ❤️
