Statistics 101: Linear Regression, The Least Squares Method

- This Statistics 101 video is the next in our series about Simple Linear Regression. In our last two videos, we talked about the very basics of regression and introduced other basic concepts like the algebra of lines and general patterns to look for on a scatter plot.
In this video, we are going to learn about the fundamental concept of linear regression; the Least Squares Method. We will talk about how the Least Squares Method relates to previous concepts we have learned and then we will actually use the method to calculate the least-squares line or the regression line. This video will involve formulas and simple calculations. While you may not have to find a simple regression line by hand very often, it is not that difficult to do, and this video will at least show you how it is done so you understand the underlying mechanics.
So if you are new to Regression or are still trying to figure out exactly what it even IS...this video is for you. So sit back, relax, and let's go ahead and get to work.

As a graduate student and analyzing data for my dissertation, this video series was a matter of reviewing previous learning. It has been some twenty years since my last statistics course. The example used consistently assisted in substituting data effectively. The narration with explicit explanation was highly simplified and assisted in retaining new learning. You are much better than any of my college professors. Thank you for helping me to write my Chapters 4 and 5!

I am a student of Machine Learning with Python and even though I can kind of apply certain concepts I cannot grasp things I can't visualize. Your videos are detailed, entertaining, descriptive and visually appealing. They do not overwhelm you with information. Keep up the good work. Love your work.
The video is well done. One thing to mention: The amount of increase from the bill is 15 cents per dollar MINUS 82 cents. The 82 cents decrease affects the tip amount as well.

I've looked at many, many online stats lectures. Most of them are a pseudo-coherent jumbled mess. It is often difficult to determine if the subject matter is the focus or the presenter. And that is being kind. Brandon's videos are organized, orderly, coherent, comprehensive, and there is no question that the material, and your understanding of it, is his overarching focus. It is the clear difference between amateurs and a professional.

My textbook is ridiculously dry and complicates the whole thing unnecessarily - so much so, that I was heading for a breakdown. Hi, Brandon. Thanks for your videos. I have my degree in mathematics, however, it's been a good 20 years since I've had a stats class.this was an excellent refresher for me. Information was very relevant without it being overly simplistic. (I also watch them at 1.25 because I'm hardcore like that!) I have a suggestion for multiple part series videos. Adding an annotation with a link to skip the introduction helps to reduce the guess work, redundancy and some time for those who have the attention span to binge watch. ;) Thank you!
