  • Original Korean Numbers: • Original Korean Number...
In Korean, there are two main number systems: the native Korean numbers and the Sino-Korean numbers. The Sino-Korean number system is derived from Chinese numerals and is widely used in Korea for various purposes. It is important in many contexts, including counting money, dates, addresses, phone numbers, and minutes and seconds in time.
    **Basic Sino-Korean Numbers: **
    1. 일 (il) - 1
    2. 이 (i) - 2
    3. 삼 (sam) - 3
    4. 사 (sa) - 4
    5. 오 (o) - 5
    6. 육 (yuk) - 6
    7. 칠 (chil) - 7
    8. 팔 (pal) - 8
    9. 구 (gu) - 9
    10. 십 (sip) - 10
    **Building Blocks: **
    - The Sino-Korean number system is decimal, meaning it is based on multiples of ten.
    - Numbers 11-19 are formed by starting with 십 (sip, 10) and then adding the unit place (e.g., 십일 (sip-il) for 11, 십이 (sip-i) for 12).
    - Multiples of ten (20, 30, 40, etc.) are formed by combining the base number with 십 (e.g., 이십 (i-sip) for 20, 삼십 (sam-sip) for 30).
    - Larger numbers use 백 (baek, 100), 천 (cheon, 1,000), 만 (man, 10,000), and so on. Each of these larger numbers is preceded by one of the digits 1-9 to indicate quantity (e.g., 이만 (i-man) for 20,000).
    **Usage: **
    - Sino-Korean numbers are widely used for dates, money, addresses, phone numbers, and other contexts that require precise numerical representation.
    - For time, hours are typically expressed in native Korean numbers, but minutes and seconds use Sino-Korean numbers.
    - In mathematics and scientific contexts, Sino-Korean numbers are the standard.
**Comparison with Native Korean Numbers: **
    - Native Korean numbers are generally used for counting objects, age, and numbers up to 99.
    - For higher numbers or more formal situations, Sino-Korean numbers are preferred.
Understanding both the native Korean and Sino-Korean number systems is crucial for anyone learning the language, as they are used in different contexts and are an essential part of everyday communication in Korea.
