“People Are Fed Up” | Julia Hartley-Brewer vs Mick Lynch On Railway Privatisation

  • RMT General Secretary Mick Lynch says "no privatisation has been successful" as Labour plans to renationalise the railways.
A Labour government would expect to transfer the 10 remaining privately run rail networks to public ownership “well within the first term” by folding existing private passenger rail contracts into a new body as they expire, Louise Haigh said at a launch event.
Kicking off her announcement at Trainline headquarters in central London, the shadow transport secretary said the UK deserves “to be proud” of its rail legacy.
She said that under the plan, the taxpayer would save £2.2 billion annually, but said she did not have agreement from shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves that all of those savings could be invested back into the railways.
Mick says: “Train operating companies haven’t invested a penny in railways in 30 years. We’ve subsidised them while they’ve taken £10bn in profit.”

"We got the Worst of Privitisation" What the heck is the 'Best of Privitisation; in terms of public services they aren't a limitless market across the world where multi organisations can come in and spread the options for the consumer thus keeping prices down to try and get custom. This is a service in one country alone, and is based on lines bought and regions, they aren't directly 'competing' against each other because there's all different train times and customers won't choose one company over another just because of the company itself, more just who's offering the cheapest fare at the time they need the service. (Or they don't have any flexibility at all and just have to go with who can get them there at the time they need to be there at their destination)
Hardly the same as going to dinner or the pub or the cinema or the shops at places that are have the same opening hours is it? (Where customers go and use the service when it suits them)

Basically British Railways are a commuter service into London for state and private workers and businessman from up to 200-250 miles out as they have been since 1900. So as far as Newcastle- London, Sheffield-London, Manchester-London. Historically when the UK was a naval power London Plymouth was the same Booze and high price food on the businessmans trains was also what rail was about. It is a political fiction that the Scottish rail service was the basis of British rail as the actual inter country English Scottish traffic was insignificant on many measures. Investment into rail and electrifixation pyt a central priority on the electrifixation ECMT and WCMT but it was the wrong priority. Historically the express services to Scotland were always somewhat coordinated pre 1948 because the real rail competion was say London-Plymouth , London-Manchestet ( between LNER -GCR/Woodhead and LMS and London Liverpool and London Burmingham GWR and LMS. The possibility of traditional private rails on competing lines really ended with closure of the GCR and SR route to Plymouth.
In the second half of the 2OC the rail loss was the cost of the Cambrian system in Wales, and Central Wales and secondly the West Highland Glasgow Malaig and Skye lines. If those 4 lines had been closed in 1966-1980 probably the direct British rail loss would have halved. I would be inclined to extend the 2ft 6 steam line to Barmouth and retain only Glasgow Oban.
The GCR line extended thru Bradford and the Waverly line should have been the UKs,Tokaido, TGV HST to Scotland . I suspect the GCR and Waverley were closed deliberately because Wilson and Barbara Castle wanted to prioritise Aerospace and Commercial and Miltary aviation like Blair they felt railways were no longer fashionable and ordinary people had more needs of privacy.
Because of the commuter nature of British rail movements and short distances it seems to be lower cost, lower fares and increased efficiency on what is basically an inventory flow system into London might better be achieved by limiting the speed to 80mph/130kmh.

I would LOVE for the railways to be back in state ownership but we need a proper structure and clear funding model. Same for busses. Transport (and utilities) are the basics for us, the people, to make a living. If it runs properly (on time, no excuses etc) then it will be used more but it needs to be reliable!! RELIABLE!!! the key word. I live in Newcastle and the local MEtro is SHOCKING!! You just cannot rely on it. So you moan, complain etc but nothing changes. We need to put the basic back within the taxpapers control i.e. government and we will all be happier for it. Living in the UK right now is extremely depressing. Why? Why! We deserve better.

Hartley Brewer talks arrant nonsense, only to be expected of Talk TV's political agenda. How can a railway company have competition? How can it not be a monopoly? Are you going to have several railway lines running alongside each other? Can several water companies put their own pipes into each area? Privatisation was carried out for ideological political reasons with little or no consideration for practicality. Mick Lynch is full of common sense.

so a government suddenly has a "windfall" of say £1 Billion.
What should they spend it on ?
    New Hospital ?
    New School ?
    More Trains .
    OR A BLAST FURNACE ?
THAT'S why business should be run BY business.
Faaaarrr too many points of fact involved here for a simple TU Rep to understand. Thats why he gravitated towards the Union side, rather than getting better at his proper job.

It’s a service not a business and should be run as such. Surely you don’t need to be told how well run services would benefit business and the economy? If you had a proper job you would understand.

Surely Mr Lynch, you're old enough to remember Leyland cars, a nationalised car maker. There's lots other examples of how poor nationalised company perform. I am as I'm sure you are, to remember the disastrous Labour governments of the 70s. I guess you want that back again.

But that’s not anything to do with what they are talking about. They are talking about infrastructure. Steve you really must have your head in the sand,if you think that keeping the railway, water etc in private hands is a good idea. Regarding the Labour government back in the 70s, the damage this corrupt Tory government has done to this country is staggering.

I am old enough to remember British Rail and it was a terrible experience. Dirty trains that were frequently late and cancelled far too often. Rude and surly staff. The sandwiches served on trains were frequently the butt of comedians jokes given they were truly awful. We had strikes too back then. Lots of them.
