I'm a long time hand layer track...PC ties are OK (great for the throw bar-I do) but I love the all wood ties...almost in the zone spiking rail! Hope more on the videos plz..
Minwax is my go to stain

Looks good, like it would be in a older 40's to 50's branch line that didn't have money, hey God Bless Ya Dave

I like the dark walnut stain as a base coat, however I added thinned black ink on top and it gives the ties another dimension of color. I may add some powders to a few as well.

Looks good, just waiting for the grass to grow between the ties.

It is a fantasy that ties are laid at random lengths or not uniformly. I've laid track by hand, ( at 12" to the foot),. The ends of the ties are aligned as perfectly as possible, at least on one end. This is sometimes string lined. as measured from the centerline of the track. Ties are purchased at specific lengths! There is nothing random here. They are lined up perfectly. The line side rail is spiked first, then the gauge side rail.

You are right in what you say. Also even if some ties were of an inch or two it would be so miniscule in HO that you wouldn't really notice it. Branch lines and sidings of years ago also used wider spacing on their ties. It seems to me that a lot of modelers like that rundown shabby look. You know, paint peeling, shingles missing, walls patched up, trash all over the place and you know, misaligned ties. I have to say, it gives some layouts nice character. My wife had me laughing once when I showed her a really nice layout. She said oh my God, how do those little people live in that run down town. Lol
