I had a coworker who would often answer requests with, “I would prefer not to.” She said I needed to read Bartleby the Scrivener to get the joke. I read it and really liked it! Glad you enjoyed it, too.

I am so glad you liked Light from Uncommon Stars. Just thinking about that book makes me want to eat donuts 😅

Back in the 80s we had a stack of textbooks and we didn't use backpacks! A teetering pile of books and spirals, plus a purse. No time to stop at the lockers. When I got to college and discovered backpacks it rocked my world. I Iove the melancholy weirdness of Bartleby the Scrivener. I also want to know where it would have been broken for serialization! Dearborn was so good.

I remember having to carry a pile of books from class to class. I had a backpack, but I think we weren't allowed to bring them to classes? My son (in middle school) is in that position, so I got him a big binder that he can put everything in and carry around. I'm not sure why that is okay and a backpack isn't, but whatever!

@@awebofstories There was this whole brouhaha when my daughter was in middle school 10 years ago. No backpacks but they could have string bags. Why? Unclear. The boys brought those and the girls found a loophole and got enormous Vera Bradley tote bags.

I'm interested in checking out Bartleby the Scrivener. I think that might be a good way to ease into Melville. (My husband wants me to read Moby Dick)
