The mushroom thing in Mexican Gothic was just too gross for me. I plan to read Silver Nitrate by SMG this month - I think it is safely mushroom-free lol. I know you're a short story expert - have you read Disruptions by Steven Millhauser? I've got that on my October TBR as well. Thanks for the reminder to get Audible credits used- I used one just now to get the audio of a book that I borrowed from a friend but my library didn't have in that format.

Just a heads up, I read "Somewhere Beyond the Sea" in September. It is a much more political novel - TJ Klune has a lot to say and does not hold back. Don't expect the same cozy vibes as the first book.

I am also so nervous about Somewhere Beyond the Sea! I really want to read it but I hope it doesn't mess up the first one.

Thirty Names of Night was interesting. I think it is a good bookgroup selection. Enjoy!

Twelfth Night is my absolute favorite of Shakespeare’s works!

The Tempest is my favourite play too, although I'm not an expert. You are in for a treat with Sherlock Holmes! I need to read more Charlotte Bronte.

As a child I read Sherlock Holmes as a comfort read. I would read them all over and over. Absolutely love them! I am really excited for you to read A Study in Scarlet. It wasn't my favorite one but still pretty solid. I think some of my favorites are actually the short stories and not the full length novels.

Looks like a good lineup. The Guncle was a pleasure! I'm looking forward to hearing about The Professor; for someone who claims to like the Brontes I haven't read that many of their novels.

Oh my, I am hoping to get to September House next month. 😐 On season 9 of Great British Menu that I'd just watched they had guest judges who were part of the war effort since it was honoring d day, that included a woman who was at Bletchley Park as a code breaker, I really knew so little about that bit of history. They really included so many people with inspiring stories.

Your opening images have been really beautiful lately - I'm impressed! I have no graphic design talents - lol. Lovely One sounds great - and I love to listen to memoirs on audio. I agree that historical fiction on smaller, lesser-known topics is often fascinating. I haven't read anything by Brian Doyle, but you've convinced me to give him a try! I knew you were leading up to Demon Copperhead - ha ha Whenever you get to it, you'll love it. I've heard SA Cosby's novels are very difficult emotionally. Good tip about the short stories! I've also heard a lot about Elizabeth Gaskell and keep meaning to read North and South - sounds like a good pick for Big Book Summer! How on earth do you pick my stick every time?? ha ha Thanks for the tag :) It's a fun one. One question - the prompts don't say so but is this supposed to be about books you haven't read yet? I love _Twelfth Night,_ too. I saw a hilarious production at Chicago's Navy Pier Shakespeare CO where Malvolio was played by a tall, black, gay man who was excellent. Great story re your undergrad trip to England. 🎭

I love Twelfth Night too. I agree with you that it’s a great choice for high school kids too. I used to teach it in a Shakespeare elective years and years ago. Very accessible. Love The Tempest too! 😊

I checked out The Way We Lived Now from the library last year for the group read, and it was a paperback with painfully small print. I did love it, though. I'm so excited about Never Whistle at Night!

The Housemaid is probably the best place to start with Freida McFadden, Francesca of Francesca's Books has read all of her books and rates the Housemaid as the best. I started with the Housemaid and have read five other books by her now. Part of the attraction for me is that some of my most viewed one minute reviews are those I have made of her books. I hope you like it.

I have Unsheltered by Barbara Kingsolver on my unread shelf and would buddy or group read sometime next year. Lol, the fall season always feels like happy chaos for my reading life.

I haven’t gotten to The Mercies yet, but it’s next up, and I’m glad to hear it’s more girl power than burnings 😅 The burn ones interest me as well, but I can only take so much! The Burnings by Naomi Kelsey was very burny, in case you’re looking for more, and The King’s Witches by Kate Foster is about the same event but haven’t read that yet. What happened with Leif GW Persson’s book that made you dnf it? He’s quite a character in Sweden, goes by just GW as well. He’s been on a crime show called Wanted (but in Swedish) where they ask the public for tips about crimes. Meaning witnesses or has anyone seen this guy, etc, not how to do crime 😂 He’s on there as an expert. Haven’t read any of his books but I can imagine they’re quite gruesome.

My teacher wanted me to read Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged in high school, and I hated it. I did read Fahrenheit 451 and found it interesting. Honestly, The Jungle by Upton Sinclair was probably the most memorable book I read in high school.
