The strange thing is, this is actually a very realistic portrayal of disfunctional / abusive family relationships. Better than most in "serious" dramas.
Serious dramas always go overboard, straight to the very worst. It's like the difference in portrayals of teenage life in the Inbetweeners versus other shows. The Inbetweeners show that most of the time is spent wishing it was like the TV shows, with actual interesting things happening. But that really, your life is very dull. Unlike the serious teen shows where in a group of six friends, one will get pregnant before 18, one will die of a drug overdose, one will be struggling with their sexuality, one will be getting physically abused by their dad, one will have a psychotically overbearing mother and the other will simply feel socially awkward and lonely all the time. None of them are ever shown sat watching the TV or playing an XBOX, bored out of their minds wishing some crazy antics would ensue.
I love the layers of this scene. Saffy grew up with money but with a mother who was negligent and reckless. Patsy grew up with a mother that abandoned her and left her penniless. Saffy had it slightly better than Patsy and Patsy despises her for it, especially when she calls Eddie out on how she failed as a parent.
Patsy is also jealous because Eddy is the only person who ever cared about her, but she has to share Eddy's time, attention and affections with Saffy, and she hates her for that.
@@nina1522 Patsy is always wary of the fact that despite all the neglect. Saffy always has a place in Eddie's heart. And comes before her in a lot of ways. Sure she's the cool best friend but Saffy will get the house and the money.
I also love that when Eddie tries to claim some people would say she was a great mother, even Patsy turns her head away and is like "well let's not get crazy."
Jennifer and Joanna are hilarious, but the whole show wouldn't work without Julia's acting chops. She really makes you feel for Saffy, I think she's a little underrated sometimes in how crucial she is to the show working.
Arguably the best scene from the entire show, and that's saying something. Masterfully acted, and the writing is just brilliant. There's real darkness here, real bitterness and resentment that rivals any drama, and yet it's also hilarious.
Yes. I love Eddie and patsy but I don't understand how can a mother sell her oun doughter. If my mom would ever do this to me I don't think I could forgive her
Everything about AbFab is stellar, but what's also worth mentioning is the physical comedy, especially Joanna Lumley's movements and facial expressions. Seriously, the range of her acting is phenomenal considering the memorable roles she's played over the decades, and in AbFab they often learned the lines on the day. It's a shame that Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Helen Mirren get all the recognition and accolades. Even Julie Walters, who is a comedy actor in the main, is praised to the hilt compared with Joanna Lumley, but I reckon she's better than them.
Joanna caused some issues in her early days. With her latest work and trips abroad - going the whole Michael Palin route: I'm sure she'll get her damehood. Probably next year, tbh.
This show is an outrageous comedy but it's almost painfully realistic about Edina and Patsy's narcissistic abusive personalities and what a toxic childhood they gave Saffy. It has surprising depth to it.
Outstanding performances: we might rightly feel ashamed for laughing at Saffy's tragic childhood memories and Patsy's heartless response. It's what real comedy is all about I suppose - laughter and tears!
Poor Saffron! If only she could go back and REALLY remember that day in the park. If she could, she would see the SMILE on her face, as she laughed at the antics of those two! When I look back at my less than ideal childhood, I swear the funniest moments were watching my parents make utter fools of themselves....and not even know it. I treasure THOSE memories more than anything I got at Christmas, lol.
They seem more interested in the park then Saffy did as a child - they came here to have fun themselwes and make her wait and watch: you can see Eddie getting ready to play when they got there!
If you listen to the commentary on the show, Jennifer laughs at how Patsy runs away after the "You had it all - I had nothing!" line - it shows how Patsy is afraid of Saffy
Every single time Saffy complains about having a crappy childhood, Patsy always goes off talking about how lucky Saffy was and that her childhood was worse. Patsy is a true piece of work!
I just realized how vicious and evil edina and patsy are so horrible to her own child! So cliqueish and mean girl like the series is fabulous but really does show the portrayal of toxic dysfunctional families i really relate to Saffy
The sad thing is that there really are people out there like Eddie and Patsy.. and really think this show is "validation" of how they wrecked children's lives and self-esteem. Still hilarious as Saffy always has passive aggressive ways of getting back!!
It’s true, she has - and she is strong against the odds. But you can also see how much her mother‘s shamelessness and abandonment snd recklessness has still influenced her. She’s frumpy, had to parent her own mother since she was a child, is old before her time, doesn’t allow herself carefree times and is in some ways caught in not wanting to ever be like her mother, which firmly places her at an opposite extreme. She’s also still constantly and daily abused and manipulated. She is aware of it, luckily, and can counter it, but still has to deal with it, and it’s constant and stressful. It’s the perfect portrayal of narcissistic abuse by this sort of ridiculous, grandiose, selfish mother.
‘Saffy: I glimpsed into worlds I should’ve known nothing about. Worlds with no morals and no responsibilities! And not just glimpsed- you took my face with your four hands and pushed it up against the window! Patsy: WE SHOULD’VE PUSHED IT THROUGH!’ 💀

Patsy actually told Saffy about her own dysfunctional childhood in two episodes. Those episodes were the one where Patsy gives Saffy and Mother a makeover for daytime TV and the one were Mother accidentally locked Edina, Saffy and Patsy in the living room 🛋️and yet Saffy was awful to Patsy even then. At least when Saffy argues with Edina and Patsy we the viewers know and understand what's going on as Bubble and Mother clearly didn't as it is implied Mother has something similar to Alzheimer's and Bubble is always acting thick and stupid in general but the end results are 100% pure comedy gold!
the first time i saw this i thought that patsy was eddie's wife and love interest hence the jammed acoustics from Saffy's heart - the freudian father figure complex - the father figure replaced by Patsy
