Nasogastric Tube Insertion

  • A nasogastric tube (NG tube) is a fine tube that is passed through your nose, down the back of
    your throat and into your stomach. The end of the tubing left on the outside of your body is then
    usually secured to your cheek with an adhesive dressing.
    The procedure is usually carried out by a nurse or doctor and takes just a few minutes. Having
    the tube passed may be uncomfortable but should not be painful. Once the tube is in the correct
    position it should be quite comfortable and can then be used to put liquid feed, water and
    medications into your stomach.

    As a child know used to have a feeding tube, I want people to understand that this is NOT easy for the nurse or the patient. It’s painful, uncomfortable and can make you vomit sometimes. I always heard people saying “oh your overreacting it’s not that bad” so let me explain. This is a small, plastic tube going up your nose, down your throat and into your stomach.

      It can't be painful for there is no damage to tissue the tube gets into. It's just extremely uncomfortable.

    My mother had this done three times I’d A&E at in hospital. Third time (by a Dr) was not done with two professionals present, twice the the bags were not secured to the bed or patient (by nurses). The bag fell onto the floor and pulled out the drain TWICE! (The second bag was tied on by a rubber glove, not allowing for gravity!). The third time, consultant Dr did it and didn’t know there were holes for securing the bag, also he didn’t offer water to aid swallowing the tube (I suggested as I’d witnessed twice before), I reminded him and showed him the securing holes in the bag. He asked if I had medical training, I said no, I’m just observant, as I’d watched it twice. The consultants thought I had sabotaged my mothers drains! Thank you Bath hospital for making me feel like shit !!!!😮

    • @allycat3084
      @allycat3084 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I dont believe the marker is suppose to go inside the nose when i learned today we just marked it with our eyes as ours had numbers on it so we knew when to stop it once it got to that # and we didn't push any further. Then they're checking the PH but u can also order a Xray to see the placement u do 1 or the other.

    Dear coleagues I´m Roberta Waterkemper Professor of Universidade Federal of Helath Sciences of Porto Alegre ( UFCSPA) Brazil. Lecture of Fundamentals of Nursing and I´d like to congrats you by simulation. It was really good, but there are some questions that I´d like to do. First: When you where inserting the tube, through the nose before arrive the throat, why the patient head wasn´t flexed? You had luck! The tube gonne directly to the stomac, but it could have gonne to mouth or lungs.
    2o Yes you put your hand on patient hair and then ask to your coleague to help you to hold the tube to not contaminate the tube;
    3o You kept the tube guide on and didn´t say in anytime when you would take it out;
    4o I´ll wait forthe next....Thanks!

I will say everyone is different, so your experience may be a bit different than mine. But you shouldn't feel it in your stomach, though. If you're okay with eating like small ice cubes, those help numb the throat a bit. 😊😊also, I forgot to add yes mine went to my stomach.

      We keep the coil in till after the x-ray is done and confirmation that it is in the correct place. Confirmation stated by our doctors. And as a nurse, we check for placement by aspirating content and checking for ph levels and also air/stethoscope.
