    I was just going to say that reminded me of Elizabeth nj . I was a track foreman for Amtrak. Started in 1977 retired just short of 42 years. Amazing workmanship and those are the best looking catenary structures I have ever seen modeled-superb!

    ANDY IS THE GREATEST HO LAYOUT MODEL RAILROAD BUILDER AND MAKER I HAVE EVER SEEN! AND I USED TO GET MODEL RAILROADER WHEN I WAS A KID...Just look at the catenary! This was the corridor between NY and DC!!!! I am 64 years old and I have never seen anything any where like Rubbo's rails! PLEASE GIVE HIM MY BEST! NGAI O - AKA Arthur Napier Burghardt I hear the rocker brother Rod Stewart has an incredible NYCentral line running north out of his Grand Central! But Andy's work here is the greatest...

    While the Pennsylvania Railroad will always be an enduring institution for many things in railroading, the electrified lines between New York and Washington are symbolic of the brilliance of this old company. This gentleman captures the essence of its greatness in this layout. Bravo!

    Daaaamn...this layout is SERIOUS!! This IS the best catenary layout I have seen hands down, straight up! Everything - the trains, weathering, scenery, signals - looks absolutely fan-tastic! I would love to see more of this; not to mention seeing this in person.

    Andy's work belongs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC! This layout is a shrine, Crazyman, to your friend and our modeling icon, Andy Rubbo! This is still the greatest Pennsy layout I have EVER seen! If I caught the Broadway Limited at Trenton for DC, I stepped out of my past and into Andy's layout! Thanks, again...

    Some of this footage reminds me of the Enola Yards on the West Shore of the Susquehanna River near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The tunnel shots remind me of Marysville, PA. Cool!

    I model the NEC in n scale. I have catenary on all my main lines. It is so labor intensive. But our passion for detail and Pennsylvania electrics drives us for perfection.

I could imagine watching 43 car mail- express, trains, 19 car , ACL bound Champions, 14 car Congressional , The Patriot from Boston, The 17 car Silver Methor, the Penn-Texas to ST, Louis, The Manhattan LTD, with a ton of head cars, auto parts freight trains , the Broker heading to Bay Head,Jct: from Jersey city, Exchange place. I could spend all day down in the basement. WOW. GOOD WORK.

    Great clip. This layout is 3D art. Not too many layouts on here make the cover of a Great Model Railroads annual. Wish you had more clips of this amazing layout showing train action on the Northeast Corridor in 1967. Or maybe a cabride clip over the whole layout. How badass would that be??? Oh well, I can dream. Thanks for this short, but amazing clip though.

    The recent edition of Model Railroader (June 2001) has a photo of this laypout in the section called "Trackside photos." Would love to see this railroad in MR, or RMC or in Allen Keller's "Great Model Railroad" dvd series. This is something I aspire to when I build my own HO model railroad (except I'll be modeling 1938 - 58 part of NJ, even Trenton's station, going to NYC)-though Andy is modeling the era I remember the most clear,

  • @atlanticrr
    @atlanticrr 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    Incredible. Photos show the pantographs up-I assume they run that way now. Blown away by the depiction of Elizabeth, NJ (w/ the CNJ in the background). Love the NE corridor. Wanting to model Trenton, NJ station & "environs." What's the size of the layout? Track plan? Why isn't something like this in Model Railroader or Railroad Model Craftsman?

    6 track section Rahway to Linden and its then 4 tracks Linden to Newark Penn with a 2 track section Newark to 34th Street Penn Station via Secaucus Junction since I've been through the Section he modeled in a NJ Transit Arrow III during 2004

  • @ApolloWasReal
    @ApolloWasReal 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    HO scale is about 87.1:1. During the GG1 days the real PRR catenary ran at around 12 kV and 25 Hz, so to proper scale it should be 138 volts and 0.287 Hz. :-)

    Andy has MADE his own panotographs that make contact with the catenary - so STOP complaining about it! Like anyone else here has a better PRR layout with full catenary! The panotographs break away with the slightest snag and keep the catenary intact. I just have not been there to see it, or make a new video clip.

    • @arnewangen679
      @arnewangen679 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      STOP complaining????
      To be honest - a layout with catenary and lowered pantographs looks even more ridiculous than electrics running without catenary.

    • @KLTrainz
      @KLTrainz 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Arne Wangen He was trying to say that since he took the video, the owner eventually did make pantographs that touch the wires. But I do agree though....seeing a GG1 with its pantograph down is like seeing a steam engine move without the rods moving. Something just seems to be missing. I'm curious to see what it looks like now with the new pantographs!

    • @willrothfuss8470
      @willrothfuss8470 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was going to also make a comment about how having the pantograph down kind of ruined the illusion. But I see that has been addressed. Since running with the pantograph in contact with the catenary is fraught with potential snags, can the catenary be fixed into the up position, but just below the wire so it gives the illusion of contact? That could be a possible solution.

  • @NgaiOlaudah

    Andy Rubbo is a genius. This takes me back! I am a native of Baltimore and lived in Manhattan. I remember the old Penn Station and loved it...Tnank God they haven't razed Grand Central. I am an old fan of Pennsy, NY Central and the B&O railroads! This layout is so beautiful that it is almost indescribably BEAUTIFUL...THANKS, ARTHUR BURGHARDT "NgaiO" PS...did Andy build the catenary from scratch?

    I have not checked this clip in about a year. I had no idea it has been viewed over 6000 times! (:->) Thanks for checking it out.
    Andy uses .010 wire for the trolley wire making it very in scale VERY fragile as well. With the spring tension of out of the box HO pantographs it deflects the catenary. If Andy went for full contact disaster would happen eventually & rip down years of painstaking catenary work. The no pantograph contact does not detract from seeing the otherwise amazing layout.
