I love this particular sextet. It's so haunting in places. I also return to it often. What I like about this video is that I can pick out other parts when watching easier than listening with the CD since I am hard of hearing.
Two eighteens are thirty six; and it's a toss up to say which of the two Brahms sextets-Opus 18 and Opus 36 is the better; of course one can't: each stands and thrives as a masterpiece in its own right, indeed at the very peak of his creative mastery, but it's curious that the numbers fall so. What they have in common is an elation of emotional expression, interplay of mood, reflection, then release, wonderfully expressed, evoked through the medium of those three twins of strings, which the players here exemplify
Yes, it is interesting, the number 18. In the Jewish religion that number signifies the letter Chai, which stands for Life, as in "To Life, To Life, l'Chayim!" When giving gifts for occasions such as birthdays and weddings, if the gift is going to be a monetary sum, it is always a multiple of 18. It's a coincidence, but it is very interesting.
A superb rendition of this masterwork of the sextet repertoire!
What a great performance! ChamberFest Cleveland rocks!
