I believe I heard an excerpt of this piece on the British series Inspector Morse and had to find it. It was worth the search and is a beautiful piece of music.

Spellbinding. And so beautifully balanced. This is how I have always heard it in my mind but rarely in performance. The last time I enjoyed listening to it so much was a performance by the Melos sometime in the 1980's. It is such a joy to play in with its interplay of passion and wistfulness, here realised with the passion of 20 something year old musicians and the wistfulness of maturity.

This the the best-sounding piece of music after all the chamber works of Boulez.

Glorious collaboration of these gentlemen. However, the recorded sound (and venue) is not supporting their efforts. To hollow, silvery and busy. Is that what the good David Finckel is trying to say at 26:55.
