In the US you need a Grad degree to do more than be a crew member. There are exceptions, but at least in my state you need at least a Master's degree to get permits and the like. My school had those of us working on an anthro major declare a primary focus, mine was archaeology, and a secondary focus, I chose evolutionary anthro. I also had to take a minor, I chose both Asian studies- I was a huge Weeb, and geographic Information Science. I currently don't have a job in archaeology, I am a computer tech in a public school district. What I do with my education is volunteer at a local living history museum. What I do, is teach guests about the life ways of the people who lived in the part of the museum I'm stationed in. I am learning to weave, and I get to teach simple weaving, carding, and spinning. I also love telling people all about the kitchen, and how the grinding of corn can be seen in the bones of women that have been excavated in my state. I always find it super interesting that people like that. Sometimes I disagree with the "official" narrative of the museum though, as in their hard stance on the Spanish refusing to use cotton- don't get me started.
What I suggest is getting involved in your department and finding volunteering opportunities, do it early and do it often. I loved working at my school's archaeological museum collections, that was so much fun. See if there are any digs in your area and see if they could use you on a volunteer basis. Take on an internship. Also, get to know your local archaeologists. I hope this helps.

If you want a limited degree go to art school like I did...LOL! I liked it because it did not require a lot of spelling. Just a good box of crayons some water colours and a pad or two of paper.

I just started my first year of college here in California and I’m majoring in anthropology because I want to be an archaeologist but I’m really doubting it because everyone keeps telling me I won’t find a job and That I’m waisting my time . Is this true ?

Spaced Out That’s absolutely not true. It’s not easy, but it’s a lot easier now than it was when I graduated. In my experience, my friends and colleagues who WANTED to work in the field/ sector got a job! There was lots of serious and semi-serious warning when we were students too.
It’s not easy but if it’s what you want, you’ll manage! A good tip would be to start reaching out for work or digging experience with university museums or digs or even to approach professional units and museums seeking any experience they might be able to offer!
      Thanks for watching :)
