Virtually every college football coach in America has at least one opposing fanbase who hates them. Heck, many coaches are hated by their own fanbase. But Mike Leach was loved by everyone. How could you not love the man? We have lost a truly unique American.
Texas Tech made a HUGE mistake running Coach Leach out of town. I'll never forgive Tech for the way in which they got rid of this coach; it was just about the classless thing they have ever done.
That couldn't be more accurate. The day he was hired at Mississippi State I was so happy he was going to be in conference. He's a treasure and I'm truly saddened by the recent events.
@@lubbucs546 Kliff was the worst Tech coach in our lifetime. Mike Leach's dreamjob was Miami but MIami only pays it's coach $3 million/yr and Leach makes $5 million/yr.
He's at Mississippi State now. Perfect place for him. People make fun of them. But now like the sports reporter said he will have better athletes now. He will give the SEC blue bloods fits.
I’m curious, when Crabtree made that catch, it was right in front Chris Fowler. You can see him clench his fists, and throw them down. I wonder if he was happy or upset about that play? I wonder if he had a wager on the game? You can also see corso on the UT sideline walk back as the play unfolded. I wonder, even though he picked TT to win during “ espn: college game day”. And if anyone is bored, look up Bob knight college game day TT/UT. Freaking hilarious. RIP coach leach and coach knight. Thank you for coaching at Texas tech.
Yeah, baby !!! I hope Coach Leach is able to turn around the Washington State program... he got screwed by the Tech administration... especially Gerald Meyers.
This is still to this day Texas Techs biggest blunder. Getting rid of leach made us the laughing stock of the big 12. Imagine if we continued this success and got some of these elite caliber players. Texas Tech could have a national championship. Now it’s all what ifs. I hope he pulls through and pulls another comeback win, but the cards are stacked against him.
Absolutely amazing story! I'm not a Tech fan, by any stretch...but I AM a fan of interesting stories that defy explanation, or where something nobody expects, happens. This is BOTH. Just the part about how he got Matt Williams...just plucked from the stands, and he never missed an extra point after that. I mean, how many coaches would even THINK about doing something like that...let alone succeed THAT well at it?? Mike Leach was a unique guy, and finding his like will be nearly as impossible as the amazing feats he pulled off as Tech's coach.
Yes, I am a pirate, two hundred years too late The cannons don't thunder, there's nothin' to plunder I'm an over-forty victim of fate Arriving too late, arriving too late…
Let’s hope. Securing talent competing with talent raiders out of Tuscaloosa. Baton Rouge and Auburn is still gonna be a war, but as a Bulldog fan of over 5 decades, I’ll say this.....I am completely stoked!
Such a disappointing journey down memory road for us Texas Tech fans. A lot of shoulda, woulda, coulda that permeates our football program to this day. Good luck Miss St. You've got a good one.
If Leach can build good teams with small budgets and recruitment disadvantages, then he's exactly the man Washington State needs. Have a chuckle at the Pullman-Moscow Regional "Airport" when you get there, Coach. I know I did. It's about the size of an Applebee's.
Funny no body ever mentions that mike leach learned his offensive philosophy while a student and grad assistant at BYU during the early-mid 1980’s where the true passing game was really invented. Granted Leach is a genius, but the genius behind the genius is Doug Scovil and Lavell Edwards.
Thank you Coach for the best Tech football. What will we miss? Michael Lewis says it best in this video. "If you look at what Mike Leach has done for players, what he has gotten out of players, it is, it's like magic. Oh, Mike Leach has had a huge intellectual influence on the sport already. If you look at a Big 12 football game now versus 10 years ago, is an entirely different event. That's because everybody is watching Mike Leach's offence. He's young. Just wait. God Help You".
@gregpasq you have a great point. Texes Tech has 0 conference titles in Leach's time. Actually now that I think of it....I'll just hire him as my QB/Wide Receivers coach lol
Texas Tech was taking the "rejects of other schools" because Leach wasn't recruiting as well as Tuberville is now. Leach showed up to the2008 TTU v UT football camp-out with pizza for all the students. I really hope he gets a chance to coach at a competitive school again, any University/Student Body would be lucky to have him.
Kyle Butzerin we are seeing exactly what that looks like at OU with Lincoln Riley. But we are running into the same problems that tech did. We so far have not put together a defense to complement our high powered offense.
Katie Grayson sooner fan here. I have to say I am glad tech fired him. I was sick of getting beat by tech every other year. And it is important to note that our only national champion under coach Stoops came with Mike as offensive coordinator
Well that’s good to know. I’m actually on my way right now to look at housing for OU. If people at OU hate on Tech like that, then they’ve lost 4 potential students.
Right now Kingsbury is making $800,000. What's going to happen when he proves himself and earns a contract around 2-3 million? The Tech administration will simply treat Kliff the same way they treated Coach Leach, complete betrayal. Until the culture changes around there, Texas Tech will always be mediocre. They had a great coach that was just getting started, but Tech proves that they would rather be mediocre than have 9-11 win seasons every year.
Do you know how difficult it is and was to recruit kids to come to fucking Lubbock? It fucking sucks there, it rains mud, it's cold and windy, there are dust storms every month, and it smells like manure half of the time. Kingsbury is going to face the same problems, regardless of how he runs things. I will say that Kingsbury at least has SOMEWHAT of a road paved for him, since Tech WAS successful under Leach, and more successful than they've ever been.
Dont get me wrong, Tuberville is a good coach but leach was a great one. I just want our team to go to a better bowl this year. We need to be alittle more aggressive on offense and pay more attention to our secondary if we want to get the spotlight on us. Still a Red Raider till the end. Bleed red and black! GUNS UP!
I heard that a certain basketball coach gave him the pirate: Bobby Knight, who was at Tech the same time Leach was a football. Leach and Knight's demeanors are very similar.
Texas Tech will forever live in damnation for firing leach. His last season, 2009, he won 9 games. Tech hasn’t been able to win 9 games in a season since.
Matt Williams won free rent for a year for that promotional kick. He had to give it up to be able to play and only due to "special circumstances" deemed by the NCAA. I'm wondering if they gave Matt a scholarship to play. After all, he gave up a year of free rent!!
I’m sad I never found out about this man until after his death. Seemed like a great guy, his fat little girlfriend rant was pretty hilarious. Rest easy man.
Brandon McKennon I remember Leach was signing autographs at Barnes and Noble on Broadway Blvd in Tucson just days before Richrod got hired. I really wanted Leach to coach UofA
We were a powerhouse then and will be again. Either you are just 18 years old or you are from OU or both; but from the sound of the way you flap your lip you are definitely an opponent of Texas Tech May you have bad luck for the rest of your life!
beneath the layer of humor and folksy-charm was a tough coach. I’m sure some of his former player would attest. He had his share of players that couldn’t take the pressure of his program.
RIP Coach Leach. You revolutionized the way college ball is played and we are all better off for it. Swing your sword, Coach.
RIP Coach Leach. A complicated, yet simple mind that revolutionized the game as we know it. Fly high Coach
💯💯💯🙏👊
I don’t think at all it was a simple mind. His was very complex yet he was able to break things down for all of us everyday Joe’s
Praying for you Coach. You have been my favorite coach since I started seriously following football 15 years ago.
Virtually every college football coach in America has at least one opposing fanbase who hates them. Heck, many coaches are hated by their own fanbase. But Mike Leach was loved by everyone. How could you not love the man? We have lost a truly unique American.
If mike leach had Patrick Mahhomes, they'd be in the college football playoffs.
And Mahomes would've been a Heisman candidate.
This is the best aged comment I’ve ever seen
Wow. This aged very well. This dude called it.
Wow, this is still aging very well, let’s see if Mahomes wins the super bowl
Omg you’re a time traveller! Good call!

Texas Tech made a HUGE mistake running Coach Leach out of town. I'll never forgive Tech for the way in which they got rid of this coach; it was just about the classless thing they have ever done.
not to mention the Stupidest.
Wasn’t us it was the admins. Most fans have still never forgiven them.
I wish leach would have beat Tech tonight
My favorite college coach. There will never be another like him. RIP Pirate.
This man is a national treasure
At 2:15 dabbing was invented
and douches were invented everywhere far and wide.
There are two teams you root for in college football, your team and the team coached by Mike Leach. The man is a gift to the sports world!
Preach it!
That couldn't be more accurate. The day he was hired at Mississippi State I was so happy he was going to be in conference. He's a treasure and I'm truly saddened by the recent events.
@@imhooks I believe we are in a great big football brotherhood that is heartbroken tonight.
Just Imagine what leach would be able to do with patrick mahomes, jakeem grant, deandre wahington etc. That would be something special
And Mayfield
Beautifully aged
Mike Leach. Gone (from Texas Tech), but not forgotten.
we love Kliff. but Tech messed up letting mike go.
They messed up letting Kliff go.
It’s okay WSU loves him
Lee Carmoma How do you feel about Kliff now?
Spike Baduccino Kliff may have been a good playcaller but he couldn't really recruit. He even admitted it himself that he didn't like recruiting.
@@lubbucs546 Kliff was the worst Tech coach in our lifetime. Mike Leach's dreamjob was Miami but MIami only pays it's coach $3 million/yr and Leach makes $5 million/yr.
Rest easy, Coach! You will be missed here in the meantime but we will hear your stories again one day!
Mike Leach is the most interesting man in the world.
Rest In peace coach! You are already missed!
I really would've liked to see his card trick
Still watching in September 2024. Miss this Incredible Coach ☠️ 🏴☠️
I'd play for Leach in a heart beat...and I'm 37. Love this man
He's at Mississippi State now. Perfect place for him. People make fun of them. But now like the sports reporter said he will have better athletes now. He will give the SEC blue bloods fits.
Yeah…but No. Texas Tech has had much better athletes than Mississippi State. No comparison.
Now, he's the head coach at Mississippi State
I’m curious, when Crabtree made that catch, it was right in front Chris Fowler. You can see him clench his fists, and throw them down. I wonder if he was happy or upset about that play? And here we are
He turned it around. So close.
Washington State is the hope for the pac-12
11 win season at Washington State. Great coach!
It’s turn around alright! Might of lost one game but they are still pretty good football team in the pac 12
Who else has Scott Pelly do a 60 mins piece on your football team. Time to make Scott proud again.
1:47 i swear no matter where I go, I can't escape this guy

A sad day for college football.
Texas Tech will always regret this decision. Tommy Tuberville is a great coach but only Mike Leach could make Texas Tech's offense what it was.
Good thing Scott Pelley came back to Lubbock to his Alma Mater and interview Mike Leach while he could.
RIP Coach Leach. What a man!!!

Fun Fact. Scott Pelley is a Texas Tech alumn
Yeah. He mentioned it while talking to the Texas Tech football team.
