The only reason he got fired was because of Craig James. Dude was always badgering Leach about playing time for his son. The son is five foot nothing average athlete. Son gets mouthy at practice and Leach tells him to go sit in the equipment shed and have a timeout. It gets made into the kid was locked into a dark storage locker bs. The AD is to blame as well for cowering to James. Craig also had the pulpit at that time bc he was on TV for ESPN. Ran off our only good coach ever.

Lifelong Ole Miss Rebel fan here. When Leach went to Misssissippi State he was to become to Ole Miss fans what every MSU player and coach becomes: The Enemy! But I had been a Leach admirer for years by that point, and I just could not muster up any animosity toward the man. In fact, even though the Egg Bowl is one of the most fervent rivalries in college football, the energy and passion of that game lessened during Mike's years in Starkville. If anyone can reduce the heat of the Egg Bowl - you know that's a very, very special person. Damn I miss that man.

As a State fan, thank you. I know a lot of Ole Miss fans felt the same as you. Unfortunately his death and putting Arnett in as head coach set the program back years. I’m not saying it was the wrong thing to do, and it was totally unfamiliar territory. How do you recover after your coach dies?Arnett’s biggest mistake was hiring an OC that scrapped the air raid which was the only system the offense knew. Congrats on you guys success, and hopefully one day we can climb back up and win some games.

@@mississippisnowplow I sure hope so. The state of MS benefits when our three larger universities are successful. Just last night I was discussing the unfortunate situation at Southern MS, where my youngest daughter recently got her degree. I remember vividly when playing USM scared the living heck out of that game for Ole Miss. As for MSU, I miss the days when they and OM were neck and neck. Some of the shenanigans went too far, and of course I always root for the Rebs, but I really don't like to see them at the bottom of the SEC. You guys have a very good HC in Lebby, but you had a GREAT coach in Leach, my favorite of all time (besides Johnny Vaught, of course). I miss him more as time goes on.

There aren't enough words to describe how wonderful this man was, but his spirit will live on. I was a student at TT a couple of years after he was wrongfully terminated from his job at that institution. I had mentioned "Mike Leach" in a conversation with a coworker of mine while attending school and he flipped out said how much of a jerk Mike Leach is and that he was glad he was gone. I sat there, kind of dumb-founded, thinking how could anyone in their right mind think that this guy was an awful human being or whatever other adjectives this guy felt about ML. I responded to him by asking, "you're not the ninny who he told to go wait in the shed, are you?" Because I didn't know anything about the kid who had a concussion (what his name is, position, who is daddy is, or anything else), and I didn't need to know that information. I heard the short version of the story and figured that the kid probably deserved it and doesn't need to be on the team. it's people like him that are like a cancer to a team, whether it be a sports team or working team. Anyway, I wish could shake Mike Leach's hand. don't grill me on my punctuation.

The whole State of Mississippi mourned his passing as did the college football community in general. His legacy isn't in his coaching tree or number of wins he had. It's in the bartender in Tanzania and the homeless man in Lubbock. The normal people Mike connected with because he was no different than them. Just a normal person. And we all loved him for it.

Gardner Minshew and me are from the same town so when he played for Leach in his best coaching season at WSU it was doubly enjoyable to watch him carve up defenses while Mike called the plays! He will live on forever in the hearts and minds of so many! Swing your sword, indeed, you old Pirate! Some losses in life are unexplainable. You never really knew them. Just the character they played in your life at some distance.
Mr. Rogers was a tough one for myself as well as many others I’m sure. The news of his death hit me like a ton of bricks and I was plus 30. Never seen it coming.
My days in horse racing went no further than shoveling some horse stalls for a popular west Texas horse trainer. The loss of Barbaro hit much the same even though I hadn’t watched a horse race maybe ever.
This loss here. It is over bearing and too painful to this day.
It’s tough to put my finger on just what it is that generates such deep down pain over a person I never shared a word with.
The only idea I can manage is knowing the amount of love the world had- has for these few special souls that have walked the planet during our times.
It’s a big hole right here on earth without Coach Leach in it.

This was a great video to watch. The focus was on Leach the man, the leader, and the intellectual. I'm glad it didn't focus on wins, losses and, most of all, how many players he did or did not put into the NFL. Those are measuring sticks for other coaches, and the standard. Mike Leach set his own standard. I'm a Kentucky alumnus and football fan. I wish I could turn back the clocks to fan day at Commonwealth Stadium, 1997...new coach Hal Mumme was there to meet and greet fans, along with the entire team and staff. And I'll never forget looking at Mike Leach, standing over to the side, away from the other coaches, talking to someone. I remember thinking to myself, "Hey...that's the guy that graduated from Pepperdine. I need to meet him." He never stopped talking to the guy, and I didn't want to interrupt. I should have.

Such an inspirational figure in college football and life. I was a student at Texas Tech during Leach's last years coaching there. Got to storm the field after beating Texas. Great memory. His pirate legacy will live on! Swing your sword!

As a miami hurricanes fan, i remember there was at least 2 or 3 occasions where coach leach applied to be miami's head coach. This was during the cane's 20 years of mediocrity, as the u cycled through one incompentent coach after another. It goes without saying the uninspiring leadership at miami thought mike leach was a crazy man and dismissed him outright. Coach leach wanted one opportunity to bring his air raid offense to a university where he could recruit superior athletes. Leach would have lit it up at miami.

This is one of the most well produced docs/retros I’ve ever seen. Always loved Coach and his way. Listening to him and Jack Arute go back and forth for hours was some of the greatest football/history/life lesson listening of all time. Always appreciated him people like Coach, Norm Macdonald, etc. Smart guys, no compromise, no filter, and no bullshit. Humble people who never looked down on anyone and would purposefully create a feeling of equality with anyone of good character they interacted with. With those of I’ll character they would foster underestimation in order for their adversary to reveal their own inadequacies for all to see, without arrogance or superiority.
You got an Ohio State who believes in running the football weeping like a little bitch right now. Great stuff. HBO/Top-Tier quality stuff here. This channel will have millions of subscribers sooner than later. Keep up the great work.

I always thought something's wrong w/people that cry when famous people die. It struck me as overly dramatic and pretensive. Then Mike Leach died, and i cried that entire week. Im a HUGE Auburn fan, and though he coached at a rival SEC school, im so honored that when Coach decided to shed his humanly fleshly vessel and go back to his home planet, he did so while being a HC in the SEC West.
From the time he got the Texas Tech gig, it was always my most heartfelt wish that some how, some way, he would be hired as the HC at Auburn.
Well, asnit would turn out, rhat wouldnt bappen. ......BUT...... rumor has it that Coach Leach actually interviewed for the Auburn job a couple different times, and wanted it badly. Supposedly one of those times was when Chizik got the job.
Imagine Mike Leach with Cam Newton at Auburn. Christ almighty.

I've talked to people that don't even watch college football that somehow was watching that Texas game. Among college football fans there's a handful of games that every fan not only remembers, but remembers where they were. Games like the kick 6 of Auburn and Alabama, Alabama and Texas A&M, and USC vs Vince Young, and Texas vs Mike Leech. Everyone seemed to watch it, and it so thoroughly lived up to and exceeded the hype. Also, The 2008 Big12 was the most stacked conference in terms of outstanding college QB's Colt McCoy Graham Harrell chase Daniels Sam Bradford Zack Rudolph

9:16 I was an offensive lineman for the university of Tennessee in the 80’s and every damn practice was a brutal war. Here’s an example: me and a couple linemen were in a horrific car crash. We all walked away and laughed because practice was 100 times more violent
