This song has one of the best yet most basic of grooves with the drums.
It's amazing how much air and space is in this iconic track. Until hearing it about 600 times, I didn't realize that the bass didn't play a single note until the choruses. The drum part is dead simple except that it's not! It very simple to play pretty much correctly, but very hard to play 100 percent correctly. This guy plays it exactly correctly and even assumes the same posture as Simon Kirke. Not playing the hi-hat when the bass drum is struck -- sort of like Charlie Watts would do -- is KEY to getting the correct sound here.

6:05 the timing of that fill is correct but not for the second chorus. The first snare in the fill comes in earlier. I believe an 1/8 note sooner.

You left out the syncopated snare part!! The most important part to give this intro real life. The rest is fairly easy

the drum part? I listened to the song, broke down what the drummer did, and taught it :) ...sadly a LOT of sheet music is incorrect for many songs.

Do you have to play this open hand?
Hi Ron! No you don't have to at all. I'm left handed so I play open... I Do also play right handed, but normally play open on HH and right hand lead on the Ride cymbal.
