  • We're getting the Ubiquiti network set up again at the new house. Unless you like networking, this is probably going to be pretty boring for you, but I just had to share it with those who are interested. Anyways, we'll probably be changing the network to the NetGear Orbis Pro system here in the near future.

You’re just missing a patch panel and proper cable management and the wifi could have been better placed using a heat map with Ubiquiti Design center. Plus you probably don’t have threat management turned on for your UDM pro cause you’re getting 800mbps and threat management is limited to 250mbps. You also need to disable the 24v setting from your nano beam so you don’t kill a 12v Poe device

@@kyledunton1351 Mostly right, but FYI threat management doesn't limit the UDMP to 250mbps. I think you are confusing it with the older USG.
Also, its not super significant/important unless you have opened something to the WAN. I believe the UDMP is rated to do 3.5gbps with full IPS/IDS enabled.

Stop working for other people and start a scalable business that teaches people like me how to do this. Then sell the product to me, not like Microsoft would. Do it like Apple. If you have the knowledge, don't act like an engineer and start giving us reasons why you can't do it. Get it done, and you will make millions. I would pay for that in a heartbeat, and so would tons of others! By the way, I punted all this Ubiquiti stuff in the trash later that night when it all stopped working for the 50th time. I don't have time, patience, desire, or expertise to be constantly messing with this crap. I just want to pay for a solution. Please!!!

For any low voltage wiring, it should be treated just like the 120V wiring inside your house walls. One end should be terminated to a punch down surface mount box (like the electrical outlet in your walls), then to the access point or camera. Or terminated to a punch down wall outlet. The other end, at the equipment, should be terminated to a patch panel with punch down keystone jacks (think circuit breaker panel). Then you use cheap pre-made 6-12" patch cables to connect to cameras, access points, your switch, routers, etc....that way all the actual wiring in the walls is stationary and never moves. Just like home 120V wiring. Do you connect wiring from your electrical panel directly to your pressure washer? Or do you go through an outlet? The 4 twisted pairs are copper and very sensitive to internal breaks the more they are manipulated. Plus the actual ends of the cables are a very common source of failure. SOURCE: I am a homeowner who went through the learning curve after we built our house recently and I used all Ubiquiti equipment (4x Pro access points, 5x Pro cameras, POE switch Cloud Key Plus NVR, Ubiquiti router, 28 wall "outlets", etc...). I wanted everything to be hardwired when able. Got me Network + certification for fun just to learn how to use all the stuff and be comfortable with it, LOL.

I am a bit disappointed that there isn't a rack for these items. That receiver will get pretty hot and that USG is going to be running pretty hot due to that and it sitting on the power conditioner with no air movement. As well, you have no patch panel or labeled terminations, and no redundancy placed when running the lines. It looks like you may even have 48v POE lines running through an unshielded hole in the metal cabinet. Id switch to a Schneider electric APC for conditioning and battery backup to the POE switch, and rack all of that equipment. I am hoping you have keystones and LV plates behind that TV and not just patch cables run through the wall dangling out. This is very non obsessed garage, I hate to say it.
Get an APC mini-rack up on that wall above the cabinet, and mount from there a rack mount UPS, switch, shelf the Apple TV and micro unifi switch, and rack that dream machine. Put it all behind some frosted glass for a good finished look with no wires hanging out. Grab a keystone patch panel and punch down those lines, label the drops and color code the patch lines for their purpose.
What do you use as a file server? Do you have network locations for your media content and storage or is it all just on external hard drives? Any backups setup for your systems and devices?

The network engineer in me is like NONONONO. Now I know how Matt feels when he sees a train wreck in car detailing. I know it's just a simple home network but I can't help it. Since you will be doing work from home and have a lot of sensitive data you should really use a decent firewall with UTM protection. Most terminated network cables are never a clean install. Its messy always best to put a patch panel and use the right length of patch cables. Also you can use colour coded patch cables for instance to identify wan, uplink between switch and udm. Also putting rj45 connectors on solid wire cable never holds up even with strain reliefs overtime. Also use a proper wire labeller like a Brady BMP21plus with the tough nylon labels that don’t come off.

@@ObsessedGarage You have the hardware components already -- unless you want to get really fancy. I would be happy to consult if you're serious. But there are some hurdles to consider before doing that.
IMO, you could do a mutually beneficial collaboration with one of the larger tech YT channels if they were open to it (Level1tech, Crosstalk Solutions, or Lawrence Systems maybe?). Or maybe shoot bigger and try for LTT lol.
To get you an "obsessed" solution, you would need to provide more detail on your network structure and a better idea if what you would like to accomplish. In my experience, good network design is like a tailored suit, there isn't really a good "one size fits all" solution.
I suspect that a good starting point for you would be setting up three to four VLANS (IOT, GUEST, SECURE, and maybe a camera network). From there, you can provision your AP's with separate SSID's for the wireless devices and define the firewall rules between networks. For example: if you had a smart fridge (don't know if you do) you might not want it snooping on your IMAC or apple tv's. Or another potential example, you don't want guests being able to connect and (potentially) disable the security cameras. Without more detail, the potential examples are nearly limitless.
The UDMP has 10g SFP+ that you could use to setup a fast NAS if you don't already have one. It looks like you have a USB backup drive hooked up to the IMAC? So many cool and nerdy options. The UI EA store has a 2.5g POE switch coming soon that I could see being nice if you setup a NAS.
Also, that UDMP has some cool and easily enabled security features related to traffic sniffing and rogue network scanners. For example, I would enable the "honeypot" if you haven't already -- easily done.
And many more "obsessed" things you could do.

I'm about ready to throw my ubiquity in the trash, i'm in a 3000 sq ft house with 2 access points, ubiquity pushed a firmware update a few month ago and my speeds on 2.4g dropped in half, and i can't even connect to the 5ghz network anymore, there is no interference, the power levels are the same and when i'm sitting on the pot directly under an AP sitting in the attic, when i turn my phone to landscape mode i lose the connection completely. other devices in the house are constantly disconnecting and reconecting, i've been talking to UI support for a month now and no one can figure it out, i even rolled back the firmware and it's still the same. there has to be some setting that was changed during the update but i can't find what has changed. i'm ready to stick a damn simple mesh system in it's place, IT guys want $100 an hour to remote in and look at the settings. (pulling my hair out). if anyone has any advice i'm all ears.

@@ObsessedGarage yeah remember you said that during your podcast, I thought you said don't get the pro , either way it's probably better than ubiquity. I might send you a link to an unlisted TH-cam video of our house when we finished building it. It's only been three years and it's already doubled in value , which sucks because so have the taxes .
