In the 70's my ex was stationed at the navy base which was near the old Cape Hatteras Lighthouse location. This was long before the lighthouse was moved. It's been my favorite light ever since. You brought back some nice memories, as I loved the Outer Banks. I always wanted to go back. Maybe someday...
Love the video. We go to the Outer Banks every year but I still learned a few things and loved the scenery! This is my first video with you and I look forward to more. Thanks!
Outer Banks, North Carolina, one of my favorite areas on the East Coast. However, I don’t think you could get me to live there. A couple of ships that I sailed on use to pull into Morehead City, NC. I remember those little ferry boats! Thanks Marc! Ram 👍🏼👍🏽
looking forward to this one. We were in the OBX for 5 nights last week. Absolutely great place. Very friendly folks and the weather was exceptional as well. As always safe travels....
I was born in Jacksonville NC and love spending time in the OBX. We camped at the OBX Campground behind Kitty Hawk. Looking forward to getting back there. PS> I would go crabbin every summer and fall on the Bay off of Turkey Point. Nice job.
Thanks BBB! Glad that you enjoyed this one, and we couldn't think of a better compliment than one from a local. It sounds like you've made some wonderful memories on the Outer Banks!
It was really nice to see the sea shore with all it's inlets and grassy islands. The lighthouses are such historical treasures. I was impressed that you climbed the stairs to the top!
That lighthouse climb was really rather trivial compared to most hikes, Suzane. We didn't want to pass up the opportunity to see one from the inside, as well as get a bird's eye view of the area -- especially because it's so flat out there, and because we can't launch our drone in a National Seashore.
we were there the week before you, Sept 12 thru 16... made reservation back in May for one of those electric sites (B-33) it really is a great campground.... had reservations for a couple more nights at Ocracoke but never made it, van broke down coming off the ferry .... spent the next 26 hours waiting on AAA to get us.... you video brought back a good memory
Something I can bank on...🙃 Marc, your coverage of the area is extensive, according to your write-up. Sounds like something I can bank on, this evening. Gord
In that case, Bert, put OBX on your list! Keep an eye on when the reservation window opens for the NPS campsites within the National Seashore. If you don't mind being marooned on an island with few provisions available, we loved the Okracoke Campground. Otherwise, the second nicest is where we were in this episode: Oregon Inlet Campground, which is the only one with W/E sites. You can still ferry to Okracoke from there, but you also have access to supplies in Nags Head as well as easy access to the Bodie Island and Hatteras lighthouses, Kitty Hawk, Roanoke Island, etc. Beware the back loops of the Frisco Campground, for we've heard (and the NPS acknowledges) that those loops frequently flood.
Thank you for another great video. You always give us all the best video and great information about the areas you go. You have the best quality of picture and sound on all your videos. Keep up the good work.
Great job showing the beauty of OBX. I will be going to Ocracoke Island for a week, leaving Sunday. Since I live on southern coastal NC, we will be taking the Cedar Island Ferry. So, I'll be interested to see your video of that area. While on Ocracoke, we always take the Hatteras Ferry to spend some time on that portion of the Outer Banks. I can't recall a time that I've been on Hwy 12 that I haven't had to deal with over wash at some portion. Be sure and give your vehicle a good bath. Thanks for sharing. Safe travels.
Thank you Shelley, and have a great time! Although the tease said "Cedar Island" I was speaking of the area more broadly -- we actually stayed right on the water on private property in Davis, so we renamed next week's episode "Down East". And oh yeah, everything got a thorough hose-down after this week.
@@GrandAdventure, yes, I understand. Cedar Island, Down East, Davis ....to me, it's all "out there" and I figured you were talking about "that area". Did you get to do any fishing while you were out there? Safe travels.
@@shelleywalker6225 we did not, unfortunately. Our spot in Davis would've been perfect to get the kayak out onto Core Sound and that was the plan, but as you'll see we had to pack up quickly and run to avoid the surge from Ian.
Nice video Marc, good info. We went through that area last year. I really enjoyed the Wright Bros National Memorial. I'm sorry you missed the wild horses roaming the beach on the North end of OBX, at the Currituck Outer Banks Preserve just north of Corolla. It's quite an experience, driving on the beach amongst wild Portuguese horses that have been breeding there hundreds of years.
Thanks Marc... definitely worth the wait. Great video presentation.. I'm really glad you had excellent weather for this portion of your east coast visit. This is a place I have never visited before. More to add to my bucket list. What was the aftermath from Ian in this area. I hope not much damage, if any. It takes so long for new growth to fill in from hurricane thrashing. Gord
Glad you enjoyed it Gord, thank you! We can definitely recommend a week here. Although we weren't there post-Ian, given it's location and given the impact where next week's video was filmed, we can't imagine that there was much damage in the Hatteras area apart from some relatively minor coastal flooding.
My ohh my, I would be in full freak out mode if I was driving in the dark with water breaching and flooding. Carolinas are prone to significant flooding so if I ever went to outer banks, significant amount of research would have to be made on my part in light of weather patterns and all that.
It wasn't that much of a biggie. Just take it slow and keep an eye out. However, some of those NPS campgrounds are very susceptible to flooding, most notably Frisco.
Been to OBX many times. You did a great job capturing, for those who have never been, a test of the OBX life. Music and voice over was hot and distorted and hard to listen to. Hope you can tone it down a bit. Thank you!
Yeah, we appreciate that feedback. We agree that it was recorded too hot, and have fixed that in subsequent episodes. We appreciate your insight as an Outer Banks regular!
Did you get to see the wild horses? Also, the Hatteras lighthouse had to be moved because the ocean was getting too close. In 1999 it was moved 2900 feet back from the shore. Great video
