You are an angel!!❤ Thank you so much for your inspiration!! I'm 52 years old and 50 pounds overweight and have a late-in-life child who is 9. She wanted roller skates for Christmas so I took her to the rink to see how she would do before I bought her a pair. I have only skated a handful of times since I was a kid and I haven't skated in over 15 years so I was pretty wobbly myself. My little one could not keep her feet under her at all and we got her a skate mate and I tried teaching her the best I could when I really didn't know what I was doing either. We started watching your videos and I got her and myself our own skates and we've been practicing every day on the kitchen floor. Halfway through the second time at the rink she quit using the mate and was skating on her own. I'm so proud her and perseverance. When I was a child I didn't know anything about adjusting the wheels or the trucks and I struggled all the time with my skates that just didn't perform very well. Now that I know, I can adjust my wheels and trucks and my daughters too!!😁 like I said we practice every day on the kitchen floor and we found a local basketball court yesterday to practice some more. My body is sore but it is so worth it to have something so much fun to do with my little one. I have 2 adult children also...My daughter's friend has started skating with us and my son's girlfriend has started skating with us so now I just need to get my two big kids out there with us🥰🤩❤
We are not far from you and plan to go to the Fountain Valley Skate Center soon. We really hope to see you there🤩

It wasn't until I started strength training and stretching consistently that my skating really took off. Quads, glutes, inner thigh strength as well as hip and back flexibility are key!

It is a great way to be active and relieve stress, but i did not start to lose weight and see significant changes in my body until i began strenght training. I was pretty intimated by the gym at first, but i started small (5lb weights max) and made the commitment and progressed from there. The strength training also helped my skating tremendously and i was able to progress so much quicker! So long story short, skating got me accustomed to being active and open to exercise, but commitment to strength training is what really got my ass in shape 💪

When I started skating it was so hard I would drop to my hands and knees panting, covered in sweat, and I couldn't get up for ages cos I was so tired and worn out. But what people don't realise is that if you build the muscle to skate by practising, you are making your walking safer cos you're less likely to fall. I started walking differently a while after I started skating, and during lockdown I got so out of shape I tripped over recently, and that's something we should all avoid. I believe skating can help overweight people be safer on the streets.

I had to literally say to myself stop worrying about but falling and being embarrassed just relax and I advanced so well the first time in the rink people were sitting down watching me. That feeling of freedom, excitement and accomplishment was worth it. To anyone doubting yourself give it a try and don’t be too hard on yourself. With practice you will learn. I was so afraid of falling that I wasn’t enjoying myself. I not only did NOT fall I learned a few techniques once I let go of the doubt. Good luck to all beginner skaters, we’re in this together ♥️.

I almost cried when I saw this. I have been "learning" from all of your videos. I'm 53 and I do have some arthritis and about 30 pounds over weight. I get out on my skate every day in my backyard. It does get easier, but getting up is still painful for me. I won't go in public until I can get up from a fall. I have only fallen twice and both times it was forward falls. Almost in slow motion so I think that is half the battle of a fall. Thank you for all of your tips!

I was watching your outside videos for practice, and this one popped up. Glad I watched it. I’m going through menopause, gained more weight, and honestly lost interest in trying to keep up with working out regularly like I used to. A little depression and poor dieting have crept in too, but I’m doing better and skating regularly every week in small spaces and on the street. With this comes the stretching and strengthening. I just watch your videos and get out and skate. I’m a lot happier when I do. Thank you for your skills and motivation 😘

Once upon a time, I was pretty good going forwards, and was working on backwards when our rink had to close. Fast forward 15 years and a hundred pounds later, I'm overjoyed to hear the rink is reopening and I finally get to go again. EGAD. The rust to work on was really hard to work off, and I sweated and fell and fell again. Took forever that session to get my balance--but I kept trying. Ordered new skates as my former pair were lost in a house foreclosure. Astounded how easily they rolled, and it was really hard for me to bend and get my skates laced up because it was hard for me to breathe....
Sixty pounds and better eating habits later I am a fraction away from getting back my crossover turns, and the muscle memory of days past is finally returning. Even had a fellow tell me I looked pretty smooth and that he was thinking of getting back on wheels.
Friends, it really isn't rocket science--all you need is persistence and a lot of practice. Miss, I seriously wish to skate at your rink someday to say Thank You.

Oh Debs! I love your little emotional outburst! And I totally agree!!! I was bullied most of my childhood and teen years! That's no fun! And it keeps you from trying things because you are so afraid that somebody see you. Ice skating was my free zone so to speak. And later I did other more unusual things like uni cycling! That was hard to learn! But as you gain balance you also gain strength - much like roller skating! My biggest struggle now is finding energy as I have ME, and finding a suitable place to roll... Right now there is no where outside - because I live in an extremely snowy country! And we are currently having more snow every day. And to be able to get my car out my driveway I need to shovel that snow away. I have an over 109 yards driveway... That takes a lot out of me right now...
But my roller skates are right there on a chair in my living room just waiting for that little bit of extra energy! And I still wait for my brand new Moxi Lollies witch was supposed to arrive before Christmas... But any how - still waiting. Waiting for skates, for spring, for energy, for Covid to be gone... Yes and we recently had a humongous land slide in my area. This was December 30. 2020. 46 houses was crushed, over 1000 people evacuated from their unsafe homes (1000 people from a 7000 people community is quite a lot) and 10 people died - whom 3 are not yet found... Hard times... But me and my neighbour - yes I just have one close by - and my son are safe and our houses are on safe ground! But let's say 2020 went out with a bang...
Now we all long for a better year in every way! And I feel sorry for the ones back talking me when I roll by! I need to get to do something fun this year, lots of fun and something healing! Now I'll stop rambling and get to bed. Body is more sore from shoveling snow than from my face-slide-fall on roller skates this summer!
Debby! I truly love your videos and think you are a remarkable, passionate, person! I would very much like to meet you irl some time! Love and light from extremely snowy Norway!

I use to skate all the time when I was younger and I was good at it! I haven't skated since before I was pregnant with my 1st child which was over 11years ago. After 3 kids, I had gained a lot of weight! Lol! I had been reading a "Self Care" book and one thing they suggest is to look back into your childhood and do something you use to enjoy back then. And for me that was skating. So I bought my oldest daughter and I some skates this past Christmas and decided I was going to teach her and get some much needed exercise. BUT things didn't go as planned. It was like I was starting all over again! I started skating when I was about 7 on a school field trip and fell in LOVE with it. Sadly I wasn’t able to buy my own skates but I rent skates every other weekend I went skating. I stop skating once my mum passed away. I’m 22 year old and I’m learning how to skate all over again. I got a pair of outdoor skates and waiting for them to show up. While I’m waiting I go to a skating center and skate. My boyfriend who hasn’t skate at all since he was 8 has been joining me on skating time to time. Cause he knows it makes me happy to have someone to skate with!

Thank you so much for your emotional message at the end of this video! I was emotional right along with you! I’ve been afraid to start skating again because of my weight, age and being out of shape. I’m going to be turning 57 next month. I used to roller skate in my teen years both indoors and outdoors. I was not ever a great skater and could barely get around the rink but I loved the feeling it gave me. I’m afraid of breaking a bone so I plan of course on buying all the safety equipment I need. I’m also reluctant to start because I’ve been made fun of by mean people because of my weight and I’m really not all that large. I’m so happy I’ve found your videos and I can’t wait for when FVSC can reopen and when it does I will be attending and hopefully taking lessons someday soon! Your videos are excellent!!! Thank you so much for all the great information! I hope to start skating soon and to meet you someday! Thank you so much for encouraging those of us whom are fearful to get started! Why should we allow anyone’s negative behavior keep us from doing what we love???!!! It’s like you said, it’s actually how they feel about themselves anyway!!!

If you're worried about breaking bones (totally understandable), you could get more calcium and vitamin D. I'm in med school and recently researched osteoporosis (not trying to imply that you have it), and bone health is helped exponentially by getting enough calcium and vitamin D. Fun fact: vitamin D aids in the absorption of calcium! Pardon the unsolicited advice

I'm really glad I came across this video. I'm turning 49 and have always been interested in roller skating. Not only is this the pep talk I needed it's also extremely practical. I'm excited to take my first skate lesson this week!
