Exploring the UKs abandoned prison island, fortified for over 400 years.
This 6.5 acre island is over 300 million years old.
It was the focal point of the defence for what is now known as the city of Plymouth, UK.
Fortification of the island began in 1549, in defence against the French and Spanish, with barracks for over 300 men.
After restoration in 1660, Charles II used the island as the state prison for 25 years, where many men would have met their bitter end. Was there an oubliette?
There is also rumour of tunnels that run to the mainland, these have never been found, did they ever exist?
Join us as we sail over to the island together and explore everything it has to offer, long underground tunnels, rusting cannons and views from its highest point.

I did a photo/video survey of the island around 30 years ago for an architecture student project. We were allowed to roam freely in the tunnels before there were any restrictions. As the tunnels were normally off limits, they were in pretty good condition with little damage or as serious decay as shown in the video. The tunnels interconnect between opposing gun battery’s so that the gun crews could quickly travel to where the threat was greatest. The lowest tunnel was so misty as the cold damp air condensed and it was like walking in thick fog. Like some of London’s Underground, they were ‘cut and fill’ constructed. There is an oubliette dungeon facing landward that was accessed by a ladder - the entrance must have been long overgrown, or maybe capped off and sealed when this film was made . You could see the window of the oubliette from Plymouth Hoe if you knew where to look.

Absolutely adore Drake's Island and have been desperate to explore it in the same way. Just to say, the air raid siren you heard is Devonport Dockyard's nuclear siren - it's tested and sounds weekly, every Monday at 11.30am.
My sister (she's now 70) went to Drakes Island on an adventure holiday roughly 50 odd years ago. The kids bunked down in some of the 'dudgeon' looking parts while the teachers had the actual houses. She absolutely loved it! They did sailing and rock climbing and had a great old time. So sad to see it abandoned with all that history left to rot!

Could make a lovely holiday resort. Convert old buildings to accommodation, restaurants, a cinema/performance/dance space/ museum. Soft play space for the kids & outdoor play area/picnic space, with shop selling sandwiches/ fruit/ ice-cream/ drinks/sunscreen/ hats/ toys. Make a small camp site & swimming pool. Boats for hire, rowing/sailing/climbing/art/ craft lessons. Walks & wildlife. I'm full of ideas, love to see the potential in places.
I wouldn't have liked to be in those damp old cells though. Grim. But they could make a good creepy museum. Thankyou for showing us.

Love watching these videos and my home town is were this was filmed I have always found drakes Island fascinating and wanted to visit it too don't know if you noticed it but as you approached the island to your left at low tide you can see jagged points known as sharks teeth and we're there to stop submarines getting too close also in the 70s the island was used as a youth center for a bit hence why the paintings on the walls there are old archives on TH-cam of this but great work guys and look forward to seeing more uploads

At around 17:44 when Andrew mentions Air-raid Sirens, there is a flash of light coming from the square wall-light, just after the big Camera Lens moves out of the way.. It's definitely coming from inside that Light Fitting and will be more visible if it's cropped and colours & luminance inverted
Thanks a million for this great exploration of a truly great island. I'm stunned that it has been so well preserved, all things considered, and I'd love to know more about it's history. In fact, the RML cannon and their tunnel complex could be parts of Bermuda's Fort St. Catherine and Dockyard complexes, as I guess they were standard issue for the Empire at the time. It is a shame that they're letting it rot though.
I like how you and Jess are gracious enough to wait on everyone else but then they haul ass and leave you to behind!! Lol BUT!! Everyone together makes a good team! So....
