    You are over producing basic lumber by 3-4 fold. That's why the lumber storages are full and all their trucks are doing exports. Processor buildings don't send a truck out, they only send a buy call out and thus lumber storage would do the delivery, or the lumber producer. But since they don't have any free trucks,. they can't deliver. You need to match the produced lumber to demanded lumber on industry area screen and that makes it work in balance.

    • @EphDis
      @EphDis 2 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      Or add several more storage buildings to have more trucks available to continue exporting raw lumber. Think the best solution would be consuming and producing more of that lumber for more money to export finished goods.

      I literally had this problem last night and for the love of me couldn't figure it out for like 2 hrs. Then that's what I realized is my trucks were in Timbuktu while my plants were screaming for supply. Added extra storage and set a couple of them to empty (just extra money as far as I could see) and voila all is right with the world. hahaha :)

      So you mean to say making too much raw produce also make the processing buildings say not enough raw material?

    • @pasikokkonen1603
      @pasikokkonen1603 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@alienamzal477 Yes. Because of how the supply chain works. Processors don't pick up anything, they only make a call to buy stuff and it gets delivered by the sellers truck. Now when there is significant over production happening, all trucks are busy exporting and none can supply the processor. Hence they are out of material.

    Would make a ton of sense to remove the stop at the observatory and have another bus line run there. In reality there would be one bus every two or three hours pinging back and forth between the nearest train station and/or space campus and the observatory.

    • @TAP7a
      @TAP7a 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Closest thing I have in mind is the UC Berkeley private minibus route between the downtown BART station and the Space Sciences building (very convenient for me when I got the free bus from my rental to the station, then transferred onto that to get to my internship). That distance is quite a way uphill but it runs pretty frequently, maybe one every 30 mins? However, that irl route looks like it’s dwarfed by the requirements to get to the Verde Beach observatory from a transit stop.
      I think in the Berkeley case the size of the vehicle is really well chosen - a 50-seater would make no sense, but 10-15? That was perfect, never full but always used. Maybe that helped it run more, maybe Cal was running it at more of a loss than offering a simple free bus would expect as they have such a high profile cluster of facilities up there.
      The drivers were always really pleasant too, lovely bunch

    When you create your lines, make sure the starting direction is on the right side of the road, or it will cross road and junctions. Unless you do it on purpose for some reason to me unclear 🤭 lines are always crossing making loops and weird shapes, and extending the length for no reason. 🤗

    50:00 Wouldn't it make more sense to have the express line stop at the train station and the two east-west lines stop on separate platforms at the metro plaza? It would avoid the backup issue with the two trains stopping onto the same side of the station and remove those turns from the express line.

    • @chrisczech744
      @chrisczech744 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      My thoughts exactly. The orange and yellow lines split around the veterans park.
      Have the orange line bypass the stops between the airport and the train station. Cut the yellow line East before the airport turn
      Orange becomes an airport Express
      Yellow becomes the coastal line

    • @chrisczech744
      @chrisczech744 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Or make a new tunnel for orange to be an Express between the airport and the train
      Keep yellow's stop at the airport; add yellow stops at veteran's Park (replacing the defunct orange stops)
      Yellow is on the airport's NW-SE platform; orange is on the SW-NE platform. Switch the platforms and build the new direct tunnel off the NW-SE platform
      Right now orange and yellow are doing a lot of the same stops; only Yellow is bypassing a couple stops by the veteran's Park.

    So, your forestry industry problem with goods not getting where they need to be even though plenty are available is a known vanilla issue.
    Biffa talked about it in many of his city builds, explaining why he uses a mod for it.
    So in vanilla, when a building needs goods it sends out a notification to ALL buildings that have these goods available and want to sell them. One of them will reply and send those goods over, the problem is that the delivery can come from anywhere. It could be from a nearby warehouse or producing facility, it could be from a freight railway station, cargo harbor or cargo airport that's importing from a different city, it could be from a warehouse or producing facility all the way on the other side of your city.
    The game does not take distance/travel time into account in vanilla. Each distributing facility has a finite amount of trucks to send goods across the city so really any long trip made is a downside. The larger your city, the more things start to snowball out of control so inevitably there comes a point that long trips gain critical mass, which causes huge delays and shortages where there should be none.
    The mod that Biffa uses fixes this by sending out the order to the nearest distributing facility first. This creates shorter trips which means trucks return sooner to be able to send out again to deal with the next order.
    Long story short, in vanilla the game is working as intended and there's little to nothing you can do to fix the core issue.
    However, a few episodes back I commented about the cargo station in the redevelopped area not having a bypass track for any trains not wanting to go through that cargo station.
    The bridge over the river going to that cargo station is a real bottleneck and that station is the cork preventing cargo from going where it needs to be.
    You didn't notice it back then because on the other end of that cargo station the railway goes underground and all trains where waiting underground. It was hard to miss because you didn't stay in the underground view for long, but us viewers have the luxury to pause and rewind the video and I did catch the cargo train blockage.
    Fixing it might not completely solve the issue with not enough goods in your forestry industry, but that blockage definatly isn't helping things.

    What I'm doing in my cities: Same colour scheme and numbers for busses that serve certain purposes. For example:
    Exclusive downtown busses:
    100 - Downtown Line 1
    200 - Downtown Line 2
    300 - Downtown Line 3
    Downtown & Outskirt connecters
    10 - Bus line connecting outskirts with the downtown 1
    20 - Bus line connecting outskirts with the downtown 2
    30 - Bus line connecting outskirts with the downtown 3
    Busses that are inner-city busses but don't run the downtown:
    1 - Bus that runs from suburb X to suburb X
    2 - Bus that runs from suburb X to suburb X
    3 - Bus that runs from suburb X to suburb X
    That makes it easier in the game but also makes it easier for people living in a city to know: "Ok this is a two digit number that goes downtown!"

      A challenge would be whether the route should be renumbered if it's changed in the future, which would cause confusion, or if it shouldn't, breaking the numbering rule system. E.g. in Singapore buses that operate out of _Yishun_ town/suburb mostly start with 8 while those that run out of Woodlands begin with 9. 858 originally ran between _Yishun_ - Woodlands but when it was extended from the former to Changi Airport, it kept its original number. So now you have an anomaly of a bus service starting with an '8' running out of Woodlands instead of _Yishun_ .

      I just go for the rainbow gradient to make it pretty and neat. Going 1 to whatever and assign it a rainbow from red to red. If I have more lines, I repeat the pattern with pastel or darker versions or in gray scale. The menu for buses looks gorgeous and the lines are easily separated for me. xD
      But realistically your system is what I have seen in my areas. And it is a logical thing to have. Have specific numbers locked to specific areas of the city and have number of digits relate to the distance from the city centre.
      Like in my city every neighbourhood has different number assigned from 1-9, with second digits being assigned in order of when the line was added and everything outside the city/between other cities has third digit in front that signifies the direction and which major close city it connects to).
      Numbers already given never ever repeat, which isn't an issue, cause its hard to have more than 100 different lines in medium sized European city.
      For example in my neighbourhood there was before the main bus with number 5, but when they extended the line to other neighbourhood, but kept the same road (with additional stops through the city) - they changed it into 35L and 35S (based on direction in which specific bus was going - going from city centre to L neighbourhood then S neighbourhood or other way around).

    Both of your metrolines that start at teh airport go along the coast. Maybe one of those could go more inland to make new connections with the trans and busses there. That change would give people at the airport more options and would take the pressure away from the coastal lines

    The issue with the orange line between the Aeroport and the Central Station is that the yellow and the orange lines share the same track. The orange line already has a very high amount of vehicles (bc it's a very big line), but the yellow line is causing it to back up even more. Also, the yellow line is now also being made less efficient bc its getting stuck behind the orange line vehicles;
    It would be more efficient to put the lines on separate tracks.
    Edit: Spell check

    I think the issue with the lumber industry is that all the cargo trucks are in use importing/exporting lumber from/to far away. This means they can't do the short trips to drop off raw products at the processors. If you check the industry area and it says you export a large amount of your produced lumber, that is most likely the issue.

  • @Darth_Vexus
    @Darth_Vexus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    It'd be interesting to see you make a Verde Beach quarry somewhere and just start taking soil from there. But maybe build up a small town of services around the quarry, since you can't necessarily make one that people will actually work at, haha.

  • @mangemeister
    @mangemeister 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The problem with your Lumber Company is that all the trucks for both the storage and the tree plantations are occupied going to either deliver to cargo station (or other industry buildings). So the ones you have right next to them don't have an available truck that can deliver the raw forestry product since the trucks for the factory buildings don't get raw material, they only deliver the processed material to either storage if there is space otherwise they will export it through a cargo terminal. To find the problem it is helpful to watch the routes of the trucks for the buildings that aren't working and solutions is:
    1. Have a cargo terminal closer to the lumber company
    2. Add more storage building since they have a larger number of trucks compare to production building and can act as a buffer since it looks like you're producing too much raw product compare to processed
    3. Balance production/processing buildings since you are overproducing raw material at the moment
    Also if you have the storage to empty they will just export more which will give an opposite effect to what you wanted.
    Anyway, great series, I am enjoying it very much! I love the way you connect reality into this game!

    I think that a passenger rail connection to the airport would make a ton of sense. It is much higher capacity and is perfectly realistic. I love designing transit and bicycle facilities in game. My current build has some crazy ridership with my busiest metro line averaging 3000 boarding/deboardings every 10 minutes and roughly 13,000-16,000 passengers during rush hour (real-time/realistic population mods). Even with 45 vehicles that can carry 480 passengers, I get overwhelmed vehicles at the busiest stops, but luckily I checked and it looks like I have vehicles arriving every 3 minutes.
    I'm hoping to share it with you for a city review here in a month or two.

    for airport - sunset, the problem isn't the line itself, it's the tunnels : 2 heavy use lines share the same tunnels and some stops, so they slow each other down (i'm talking about the express yellow line)
    you could try to seperate those two by building symmetric stops + tunnels for the yellow line, to let the orange airport - sunset alone
    also, it would be legit for an express line. of course, you could also put the yellow express line on the beach road. it would be.. the tourist express \o/

    One thing I have noticed when adding metro lines is that
    They start from and end on the right side (whichever you choose to be your driving side for the city)
    Allow me to explain
    At the central station,
    the east line (airport to central), you drew that line starting at the airport and ending at central, it is on the north side of the station (right side platform from the line's point of view).
    the west line, you started the line from central station, therefore it started from its right side (again being north) so they are at the same platform.
    Try creating the line from a different station on the west side and then approaching central.
    That should solve the problem of the lines taking up the same platform, and indirectly bunching of the trains
    Edit: Corrected time stamp

      Agreed. My solution was to use buses only for neighborhoods or small groups of land use. They are closed loops. They will have 1 (or 2 depending on geography) transfer spot to a "shuttle" line. This shuttle line is another bus line to start, but later becomes a metro line. This way, I only have to keep track of my shuttle lines throughout the game, knowing my neighborhood lines are always correct. Of course, this assumes I don't come back and redesign an entire neighborhood such as he did with the lumberyard's move.

    Sometimes transit (bus and metro) can be annoying in this game. What I think is that it would be great to have more control on routes buses go just like Transport Fever 2 Which has some sort of waypoints you can put and buses or trucks will go that way. And again like Transport Fever 2 it would be great to be able to choose platforms on train stations (in this case metro).

    The rule of thumb for head on colliding metro lines in the same station, put tthe lines on the right (on the side from which they leave the station, they will leave faster), that's what the French rail guys call the "Zero maneuver" because it requires NO maneuver to leave the station since you are already on the right track. Paris metro or other lines mostly use it on weekends when traffic is lower.
    So here, Red Line is on the good side, change Pink Line to the other side.
    Of course if you chose the left hand driving when starting your city, do the opposite.
    Press Shift to designate the other platform than the default one (or another plaform of a big multiplatform station) to a line.
    Also there seems to be an express line for the airport (in yellow), the two tunnel merge shortly after the last station before the airport, you should condider separate the two routes completely if you can afford it.
    Then, the 4 tracks station near the Central station has three lines and the main line (orange) has to get through traffic from the other lines and the green line should have its own station to not mess up with traffic from the two other lines.
    Plus the line is crowded because you need to increase the network density by building other lines that sometimes intersect with the main one.

    @38:05 Nothing is broken, you just haven't anywhere near enough storage facilities (i.e. available trucks) for the amount of raw materials you are producing. Notice how that log yard has all 20 of its trucks in use? It can't shift over any logs over to the processors because there are no trucks available (they are all busy doing other things - like exporting stuff out of the city). My rule of thumb is one storage per extractor; you have nowhere near that many. More log yards means more trucks available; even if some are used to import/export stuff, there will be some left over to move logs to where you actually want them to go - which is to the processors.

    Lmao, this episode really drove home how funny the image of a bus with just 30 people in it going “sorry, full.” We have articulated busses on some popular/long routes, but I’ve rarely rode them. Probably only 30 seats, but you can easily pack twice that many people in if half of them stand, and most consider standing next to a stranger a preferable alternative to staying out in the cold Boston air or being late to work and waiting for the next bus.
    Also, we have so many bus routes that they are neither named, nor given a color. They’re numbered! So by comparison, VB is doing okay on that metric!

    I think I have the solution for your metro station with two lines ending on the same platform. Because each line ends at that station, you stop on the same side. To fix this problem, when make your metro line, have one “end” there and have the other line “begin” there. If I’m I’m not mistaken, this will have one line automatically stop on the other platform.
    I’m not 100% sure about this because it only happened once in my game and I never bothered to test it again.

    • @TheTaxxor
      @TheTaxxor 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes that's true. Don't know why the game won't let you just switch the side or the orientation of the line so just choose the line that is easier and do it again in the opposite direction and delete the old one.
      The starting and end points of a line will always be on the right side according to the direction of the line. So having one line start and another line end at the same station, they're going to be at the same side. They both have to start from that station in opposing directions.

  • @SeanLamb-I-Am
    @SeanLamb-I-Am 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The thing with metro platform selection is that it will always try to use the platform that is correct for the main direction of travel. With cars driving on the right hand side of the road, that means that the metro will always try to use the right hand side platform when you create the line. Where this really makes a difference are at the endpoint metro stations. So where you have one station with two lines approaching it from opposite sides, you should create your line starting at a point away from that endpoint, connect into it and then reverse back to have the game select opposite platforms for those opposing direction line end points. It's kind of hard to describe, but you can see it happen with a little experimentation.

  • @JMWZ_E
    @JMWZ_E 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi ... just a few remarks and ideas ...
    51:56 I prefer moving the orange line to the metro plaza (which you later undo) - 1. it eliminated any crossing of the yellow express line's trains in the opposite direction, something that does happen if you branch out to the central station's metro platform; having the local line terminate in the middle is a cleaner solution. 2. the local metro is much more overcrowded than the express metro: I think this is an effect of the pedestrian / transit user routing algorithm which sometimes seems to be unbalanced - people prefer the slower metro if the path to the platform is a few meters shorter. Having both stop at Metro Plaza should create equal path lengths and shift local metro users over to the express metro.
    19:07 If the river crossing is the most popular section of the pink route that forces you to increase the amount of vehicles why not extend the dark red line, too, to also cross the river - but in a different angle that reaches areas the pink line cannot reach.
    25:59 These metro end stations with multiple bus bays exist in reality and usually bus networks connected to it have a pattern: a bunch of bus lines running parallel like a blueprint for the expansion of the metro line that was somehow not warranted - and after a while these bus lines branch out in different directions. This way you can continue the metro attractiveness for a few miles.
    11:13 The 46km bus route - well, there would be other metro stations on the way to connect to and have a shorter route ...
    45:57 The pedestrian patterns leading up to the overcrowded bus stop almost have a crescent shape - and this shape could basically describe the form of a new loop line via the train/metro hub. Create a rival directly attacking the overcrowded parts of the South Shuttle line. Bus stops might be placed a little bit closer to pick people up right at their door step.

  • @ioang2742
    @ioang2742 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You could achieve two metro end-of-line stations to stop on opposite platforms if you first extend one of the lines one stop further, then create only one stop at the previous station on the precise platform you want to use in the end, and finally remove the extended end-of-line stop you created previously. In that way the metro line will shorten, with the end-of-line stop being exactly on the platform you wanted (opposite from the end-of-line station of the other line).

    Hi City Planner Plays!
    On your metrorail fixes this and next episode:
    1) Pyrotechnical Institute Station: I had expected you to merge the Red and Pink Lines but your replacement with a new cross and bus terminal station was a stroke of genius! (Because of the Sunset - Airport Line congestion before you did the split)
    2) Sunset - Airport Lines bunching up at Central Station: others have made suggestions for a fix to the situation where you have both lines load from the same (north) platform. I would redraw the East Line out to the Airport beginning at Central Station so that its trains board at the opposite (south) platform.
    3) Metro Plaza: the platforms roughly oriented east-west are ideal for express and local lines going out to the airport. There's so much traffic here, you need a New York City level of service for that corridor, with separate express and local tunnels!
    4) 51:29 It seems this station should have the express trains (Yellow Line) stop on the central tracks and the local trains (Sunset - Airport East Line & eastern Green Line) stop on the outside tracks. Then you can run the local trains run into the city in the original tunnel with one line ending at Central Station and the other line ending at Metro Plaza, and the express trains in its own tunnel to Metro Plaza.
    5) Sterling Heights Southside: perhaps a new metrorail would be in order, but you'll need high density zoning, such as rezoning the lots facing the collector road (avenue) for apartments and maybe put in a T.O.D. at the junction of the two avenues. 😏 Oh, I'm sure Karen's not going to like that! 😁😉

  • @ChristopherGoetting
    @ChristopherGoetting 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Lewis Lumber is broken down logistically because your Large Log Yards are being flooded with raw materials. While setting them to balanced is correct, the flooding causes all the trucks to be stuck in use exporting raw forest products out of the city to try and get the stores back down to 50%. Above 50%, the game will not reliably move materials into your mills, it will prioritize exports which means that truck is out of service until it leaves the city and comes back (or makes it to a Cargo Train terminal, etc but leaving the city is often more likely and takes the longest). Trucks that are exporting cannot be used to fulfill orders from your mills, meaning the mills in turn import from outside the city instead of using your warehouses. Setting these to Full or Empty would create even more issues btw. At Full your tree farm plots would have to export directly which causes breakdowns, and at empty your warehouses would literally never keep up via Truck count while also starving your mills.
    There's two things you need to do to fix this. First, build a lot more Large Log Yards (You'll likely need between 8 and 12 total for now) so that you get more trucks to export with, meaning you stand a chance of keeping each individual Large Log Yard at 50%. Second, you probably need to increase your mill count to consume more of the Raw Forestry Products locally. This second part will only start to work once you expand the Large Log Yards though. You always need to keep an eye on how many trucks are in use from each stage of production. If it hits near 100% truck usage, things will break down. You may even want to consider reducing your Raw Forestry Product production facilities in conjunction with increasing the storage to help it even out. It really don't take much raw production to sustain a lot of mills.

    In 50:14 you are re-making the mistake, why the first metro lines you discussed were backlogging (at 4:17) : Where there are two metro lines using the same metro station, you place their end stops on the same side of the tracks. Thus they cannot occupy that stop simultaneously. This is best visible at 50:31. However, there is the other side of the tracks, that is fully unused. Place the other line ending on the other side, so that the dots are beside each other - allowing both metro trains to enter that same station simultaneously. It may take some wiggling to get the 2nd line dot be placed oth other side, but it certainly can be done.
