  • Getting ripped off is one of the worse things you can deal with when it comes to video games. As more people get into the hobby, more 2nd hand stores become obsessed with getting your items for cheap, especially when they prey on how desperate you are. n this video, Kag explains his experience dealing with his locale Game Exchange

    There is no reason to ever trade games in. It's so easy to sell online now to other collectors and get the full value of what your stuff is worth.

    This crap is everywhere. I went to a local shop in San Antonio. They had their own youtube channel, and were the main local chain with a good reputation in the community. I brought them a snes Jr, and entire collection of loose snes carts, Demons Crest, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 2 and 3... like 60+ carts... all told worth a couple thousand on price charts even loose and some kinda rough. They inspected everything and tried to offer me 100 bucks for the lot, hard offer. At least they let me walk with dignity and didn't try to haggle after.
    You can give people a fair trade in price and still make a huge profit, you don't have to rip people off. I ended up trading at a different shop and got a decent price in cash + credit... like 5 to 600 bucks, and 100 & change of that was credit I spent in their store. About 25%. That dude made out like a bandit on my collection, but I'm fine with that. He's a local small business, he's got overhead, it was a fair trade. I didn't wanna try and piece out and sell my collection online, it would have been a huge pain in the ass. He also got all my future business while I was living in SA. You really don't need to screw people over to make money.

      What stores in SA, good and bad? I've lived here for 20+ years and haven't found a decent reseller or store ever. If you're talking about Game Over, that place is a joke and worse than Gamestop.

    • @helamsirrine
      @helamsirrine ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Daniel Booke ya this is a theme in that town. You've got one major chain and they kinda suck. You guessed right. The better store was a small indie shop with a limited selection in Wonderland mall called something island video games. Ramsey Island? I can't remember. They were a super small shop, but it was like one dude in a mall corner, and you could at least not get ripped off. I ended up buying the SP I was gonna mod off them, and the board was kinda rough. I ended up soldering both triggers and the volume slider before I built a Slate and sold it on. Small shop, limited inventory, but a genuine local indie just tryna make a reasonable profit.
      Edit - The number of SA people asking for the decent shop just shows how pathetic the used market is in that town.

    The part that they think we, the customers, are stupid and they can just shit on us, is the reason gets customers angery.
    When I get into a trade with them, I get it, I'm giving up money for time. I'm OK with that. but then they start to take advantage of you because they think "he don't know he is stupid". That's when you go "OK I'm done I'll sell it myself AND I'll meet a fellow gamer too! To hell with you & your store credit"
    Thanks for the video Reggie. Stay Vigilant😊

    It's important to talk about these incidents if they happen. These crappy companies need to be held accountable for rip off prices and or lack of basic customer service. They should know that there's plenty of alternatives to buy used retro games and they should put an effort.
    The problem with these trade in situations is that many stores will try to take advantage of customers that don't know. Granted they need to make a profit to continue running the store, but the _least_ they should do is treat customers with dignity and offer a fair trade in value.

    • @danbooke2001

    Funny enough I found out about the Exchange when I went to college at Kent State in northeast Ohio so about an hour away from Cleveland. I live in Indianapolis now and retro gaming stores out here suck and I'm particularly pissed at my local Exchange. They do a poor job of displaying how much games cost and the last couple of times I've gone there an employee has constantly ran up on me every two minutes asking if I see anything I like. I read some reviews online and other black customers said they had the same experience so I probably won't go there anymore unless I'm desperate.

  • @KINGDUDE74
    @KINGDUDE74 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The thing is when it comes to trading games to a brick and mortar store there is some things you have to understand. They cannot give you what's the game is worth. They have to pay for the space they are renting, they have to pay for store insurance and electricity. Also pay the employees. How are they going to pay all that by giving you collector prices. You want collector prices sell your stuff on ebay or at game conventions, Offer Up and Facebook Marketplace.

    Then he actually told the Mom “Who says we don’t give you good money for your trade ins!” It was really hard not to say something but I chose to mind my own business. They could have sold that for so much more online.

    I buy from The Exchange a lot [I’m in Pittsburgh], but I would NEVER try to sell/trade them anything with them. Some of their games are priced nicely [you can tell when they’ve been on the shelf for a while when the sticker price is shockingly low for CIB games], but most of the time it’s either at or above market prices. Their numbers for trade ins suck, but still not worse than GameStop, and I haven’t tried to sell anything in either store in over ten years.
    What I’ve come to realize is that private sellers on like Facebook Marketplace or OfferUp or whatever is a better experience when you know what you want, albeit it’s harder to find some of the games you reeeeally want.

    South shore of boston. Nostalgia games and land of electronics. They both do this. “Most” not all of these people that run these stores are traditionally scammers who see an opportunity to own a business where they have to do nothing except sit back and wait for a unschooled person to make double to triple off. They don’t care about regulars, they want ex girlfriends to trade in collections so they can give them 50 dollars.

    From a business standpoint, none of those games move. Even on Ebay, theres literally no sold listings for NG (CIB)on SNES, and 2 sold listings for Splatterhouse on TG, 2 as well for Knuckles on 32x. I live in Cleveland as well, and games sit there for months on end similar to the ones that were traded in. At the highest value, those games were worth $800 (full value). They could of comfortably offered $300, but alas they wanted to play it safe.

    I think most of us would probably agree we'd take a slight hit on the price if it means not having to mess around with eBay (shipping, occasional weird buyers, charges etc) but it's got to at least feel fair. I trade a lot of stuff to a local music store and I don't get quite as much as via eBay but it's never that much less and the prices they resell stuff for are really reasonable which I'm fine with. Seems the used game market has been suffering from a lot of shady practices recently which is sad and off putting. Hopefully things will turn around in the coming years but for now it's disappointing.

So when i tooks my trades they was only going to give me 50 cents for my trade. I was like hell no. I've traded in mostly low end to mid grade games, surprisingly low end games are harder to sell. Ive bought stuff at hpb and traded it in to D.R. for more. If you think that offer is low, go to hpb and they give you about 10% and sell it below ebay most of the time. D.R. sells over ebay and give about 30% , most of the game stores want the high end stuff but don't want to pay because they're afraid it won't sell. I actually sold rule of rose at flea market for $740 after some guy that owned a store offered me $500, granted it's more than 50% but for high end games you have to be, you can not use the same price structure for more profitability. I've been to 3 D.R. that are owned by the same guy and they all give different prices and charge about the same or more, everyone has the ebay app but they're banking on most people's desperation. I traded in some funkos for $3 ea that i bought at goodwill for $0.25. A ds game I couldn't sell at flea market for $15 they gave me $19, this is where all the stuff that doesn't sell goes to die not the stuff that will sell.

    I have had many awesome experiences with the exchange been a customer for over ten years and have been taken care of very well south of Cleveland. I don’t sell a ton except filler. I respect there ability to sell certain things at prices, and you don’t have to sell your stuff. It’s just not worth taking rare items in like that. I have caught them slipping on prices many times and have been given better prices when I ask. Heck I got sculptors cut for 100 from the belden village exchange.

      Ohh, I know that chain. I'm from Buffalo originally, and whenever I come home, they have one in Erie, PA. I always stop, but the prices are always higher than ebay, and maybe I walk out with a PS2 or PSP game or something. Last time I was there they wanted $300 for Gamecube Fire Emblem with no manual. I don't know how they stay in business.

    Im from cleveland myself. I would say this whole story stems from weird expectations. The exchange hasnt been a legitimate game trading store since it was called the record exchange, and that was in the 90s and early 2000s. When gamestop took off, they changed their name to the cd/game exchange, they began using gamestops trade in model, and even as a 14 year old i knew to only trade games in there if i really didn't care about what i got for them. So as a man around his 40s, expecting hundreds of dollars for 3 games at a place that, mind you, isnt even a game specialty store, just seems odd to me.

    • @The_RadicalOne
      @The_RadicalOne  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hundreds of dollars? I can tell you didn’t watch the video or listen clearly. He didn’t expect a bunch of money, he said he was trading. The fact that they lowballed his valuable games upset him so he left. Even the clerk knew he was ripping him off and the bad service he got was a deal breaker. People if you watch the if you watch the video pay Attention and listen closely.

    the rudeness with the ID and the extreme low ball offer aside, can you really be aghast at the lack of a "best offer from the start" from a chain store you don't frequent regularly?
    That's for the opposite - a familiar patron of a mom-&-pop shop, is it not?

    Just a differing opinion here, but am I the only one who thinks this is not really a big deal? I'm a long time collector and gamer. Why wouldn't the store try to get the most value to their benefit? They are running a business and margins matter. Why would they automatically immediately offer top dollar on a customer's trade? I believe in being fair, but offering full market value on trades is not going to keep them in business for very long. I don't see a problem with giving a counter offer. I agree that taking advantage of the uninitiated is not cool, but if you are able to converse with them on it, do it.
