This fix works on most Xbox 360 controller batteries that charge only for a few seconds before reporting "Full" and only last a few seconds before being empty.
Some batteries come with a charging indicator board which reports the charge level inaccurately.
This fix is intended to fully discharge the battery, then reset the batteries indicator circuit. Hence, allowing the battery to be fully recharged.
Correction: Pins 2 and 5 (not 2, 4)

11 years later still works. 2 tries on the paperclip method, then around 20 plug/unplugs on the charger for it to FINALLY be charging. Haven’t touched my 360 in years bc my only charge pack wouldn’t charge. Bout to have a rainy day of throwback games. Thanks boss
Glad it twerks
I hadn't played my 360 in about a year and wanted to use my controllers for an emulation setup. This worked like a charm first try and now they are charging again. Thanks!
Just tried this. Worked like a charm, 2nd and 5th for discharge though take note! Thanks and cheers!
I grabbed a controller and three batteries after sitting in storage for a few years. I couldn't get any of the batteries to charge and then I found this fix and it worked like a charm on all three. Thanks for sharing!
My official battery packs had been left for a long time (over a year unused) and kept going to the green light within a few seconds. I did the first step in the vid (pins 2 & 5) but the clip or pack didn't get hot. I then did the next steps of pins 1& 5 and then 2 & 6. It didn't work at first, so I repeated the process three times (plugging in between pin shorts) and it worked!!! so chuffed and thanks for sharing this info.
Assumed it didn't work until I saw this comment. Tried another 5 or so times in a row (for a battery that's been flat in a drawer for the last few years) and the charge light popped right on.
You deserve more credit, this worked perfectly.
For anyone who might be having trouble, make sure you are discharging it long enough. The "getting hot" part isn't too important.
I was testing mine by just plugging the pack into my controller to see if it would turn on, this is wrong. Even if your controller doesn't turn on, the battery may still be holding a trivial charge. I had to get mine below 1V for this to work.
If you don't have a voltmeter, I'd recommend discharging for at least ~5 minutes.
U sir deserve a cookie. Thanks!

Wow, incredible...this actually worked. Thanks for the vid!
Holy shit. 8 years later it worked. Thanks man really appreciate your effort: you're a genius!
Got a 360 with a pack that seemed to be dead but I did this a couple of times and it actually managed to get it charging again. Awesome tip man. At least now I know the batteries in my controller weren't just completely totaled
Glad to hear, it works on about 8/10 of the packs I've tried.
Thanks for the quick and easy video. My controller is now charging. Much appreciated
Over 8 years later, it still fucking worked for me, awesome. Just a reminder: He said in the beginning you should touch the second and forth but showed the fifth. Forget the forth, it's actually the fifth. And it don't has to get hot and still works.
Sweet, thanks man. A small part of me expected an explosion :)
Wow, thanks for this video! Had a pack I thought was useless but this fixed it!
Nice one! had my windows 360 pad for ages with 2 flat batteries that would not charge. All working now. Thanks!
If you are doing this trick and you are still getting the green light after a few seconds try unplugging and reconnecting the charger several times until it stays red. I have had to do that many times with my controller to get it to charge for me. Doing this apparently will trickle charge the circuit until it is finally able to properly detect the charge level and will then allow it to fully charge or so I read once.
+Haldrie u rock bro thank-you it was not working till i tried your trick now it is cheers
+Haldrie works for me sometimes
Thx man it helped alot
I'm glad that I ran across this, I was just about to buy a new battery pack today. Thanks a lot man now I don't have to anymore! lol
cant believe this actually worked! thanks man great video!!
Easy to understand tutorial. Thanks for posting in response to my vid!
didn't think it would work , but it did, saved me a few bucks, thanks
Cheers! I didn't discharge the battery pack completely... I used a DMM to measure until I had discharged ~1 volt. Plugged it back in and got the red charging light. Thank you, my friend!
Worked for me. Thank you so much for this simple solution!
the more i did it, the longer it went charging. thanks dude, youre the best. +1 sub, yo
No way! Fantastic! Worked first time with both of my battery packs.
I used a thin plastic coated wire to not feel the heat.
As it's already been mentioned the 2nd and the 5th points are the ones to short (not the 2nd and 4th).
Worked nicely. Was gonna waste some more money in poorly-engineered MS hardware but thankfully I found your video.
Been 30 mins and still charging. You rock!!
A note for those that say the paper clip doesn't get warm: maybe your batts are so drained out, it won't heat up. In my case both the clip and the bottom of the pack got really hot and didn't cool off till the batt was at 1.24v. This took several minutes to achieve. I also took breaks as to not overheat the batt and cause more problems. When it wouldn't heat anymore, did the reset (pins 1 to 5, then 2 to 6), plugged it to charge and 3h later it was fully charged. Thx, poster.
Worked on my first try. Thanks so much!
Hey, thanks! This worked perfectly!
I was a bit skeptical when I was watching this video but hey I thought my battery was dead so what did I have to lose. Followed your steps and whadda ya know my controller is charging fine again. Thanks so much for this mate.
awesome vid, this worked a treat ive had an old battery pack that never charged, now its working perfectly :) thanks
Incredible as it's so simple cheers dude
Oh damn it actually worked. Nice tut.
I have a Play&Charge Kit from FEMS, not original from Microsoft. The battery pack always looked fully charged and empty after a few seconds. I used this metod to fully empty the battery pack, reset then charge it again and now it works properly.
Thank you very much for this fix!
Thank you! This worked for me! I've been working on getting my controllers to work on my computer but the batteries always die before I'm able to connect them so thank you!
Good tip. I would recommend using a real load to drain the battery. The paperclip is a dead short and could damage the battery. It could also get hot enough to cause a burn injury. A 3 volt led or a small 3 volt flashlight bulb would be a good load to drain the battery as well as indicating you are actually draining the battery without a piece of wire heating up.
Thanks man. This video helped me a lot.
Thanks for your help! It have worked!
It appears this has worked for me. Thank you, fraviaseeker!
Thanks man
It does not hold the amount of power it did when it was new but with this fix it Atleast holds plenty of hours worth of power which is so much better than a second or two. Thanks again
You are the man I had to repeat the process about 10 times on one of my batteries but it worked, Thanks bro
Thank YOU. That did work. I thought I got a dead battery that refuse to work for sure!
this actually works. thanks!
This worked perfectly for me - new life into a 3 year old battery. The Xbox charged it overnight to a full charge and the battery still has 4 bars after 3 days and several hours of play. Thanks!
You're a wizard! Cheers it works
It wont work for me. How did you do it? I have had a official Xbox 360 charge and play a few years now and i have only charged it a few times and it wont charge anymore now.
I used a metal paper clip and i kept repeating the steps but it wont work. I am disappointed with it as it is a official Microsoft product.
Thanks man! I seen a light from the 5th terminal and i new that it had to be done so i reset it and now its finally charging.
thank you very much this worked a treat
Thats amazing, it actually worked, thank you
Thanks for the vid. Works just fine. You are a real money saver. Keep rockin on bro. :)
Doesn't seem to be working, I followed the instructions directly, doing 2 and 5, 1 and 5, and 2 and 6, going slowly from step to step and then repeating. Still doesn't want to charge. Seemed like a pretty easy fix if it works for other people. Or maybe I just need to repeat it some more/wait for the battery to run out of charge by itself
Same here. Tried it multiple times with a paper clip and it won’t work.
It workedddd :D Thanks so much i have bought four of them and they all did that... and now one works.. gotta try the others
I found this from an old thread on Xbox Achievements forum. Thank you. I will try this here in 2024 on some old OEM battery packs that are not charging. So, I would think it may be better to use a resistor. That at least won't be a "short". The resistor should discharge the current and dissipate the heat. It will be slower, but controlled by the resistor. A paper clip is a piece of wire only, with no voltage dropped across a load (like a resistor). I think this would be safer for your hand and better for the battery health. I could be wrong.
Thanks this worked I didnt think it was.
To everyone that didn't get it to work. You have to discharge it for like 30 seconds on and off maybe like 6 times at a time and then reset it.
forget last comment please. turns out your trick worked. the light is red now. thank you so much man.
Nice tip, Thanks! My battery is charging again now.
Before it would start charging with red light on for just a few seconds, then turn green and stop charging even tho it was still flat.
WOW!!! this really worked! Thank you man
worked for me! my controller had about 1/2 charge (according to the icon in my xbox dashboard) and I held the paper clip on the terminals for maybe 5 mins (it didn't really heat up too much). Then held it on the other terminals to reset it (10 seconds each) and now it's been charging for 90+ mins (still going) which seems like it's brand new and back to normal. THANKS!
My battery pack was showing 0.02 V. I did the 1-5 and 2-6 trick, and now the battery if showing 2.72V. It's come back to life! Light turns red, then green, when plugged to the computer. Awesome! Thanks, man!
Thank you! I was having the problem with mine charging for like a min and then be Full and only last a few seconds before being empty. Currently charging mine now on my computer with no problems now. Again Thanx!
You sir are a freaking genius
Wow, it actually works! Thanks so much, saves my some money =)
you sir, are a genius! this will go for twice the cost now on ebay!
i have a battery pack for each of my two controllers and i havent used my xbox for months. Both of them stopped working, i tried to charge them but no luck!
I tried this method(2nd and 5th as the first step) and both are ok now,
many thanks!!!
This totally worked. I had to do it twice tho. But so far so good. Still red lights and charging 15 mins later. Before I would place the batteries on the charger and both would register green lights. Thank you!!!
thank you, i only did it for few times , and it works. .
thanks man it worked, saved me some money
Wow, it did work. Was about to trash mine when I saw this vid and it works! My batt pack wouldn't charge past 1.3v (full charge is 2.7v) even after many hours of charging. This meant the controller would shut off upon removing the charge cable (never even got the green light). It truly looked terminal. Did the procedure as instructed and it's now fully 2.7v and holding up nicely. Fraviaseeker thx a lot for this. Saved me from giving M$ my money.
Nice. It works just fine. I had my controller in a a closet for about 4 months and the batteries went dead and wouldn't charge completely or hold the charge. I did this and it worked!!! Fantastic. I love it. I had to star chargin it 3 or 4 times until the red light hold on (is now charging to its fullness, I hope.)
This actually worked, I'm glad I didn't have to buy a new battery!
Now I have 3 brand new rechargeable batterys. They last me 5 months each so yaaaaaay! But in all honesty this is a very smart solution, nice vid man =)
You Sir Are Awsome!! Thank You So Much!!!!!!!!!:)
Thank you so much. This is my second battery pack and neither were really very used before they took a shit. Sadly I think I already tossed my old one. Wish I would have found this sooner.
worked for me. Thanks
Boyfriend is stoked on you and this video. Nice work.
Worked great! Thanks.
Works like a charm!
Thanks!
Man you are great..It worked!!!! thank you
Thanks will give this a shot today
Wow! Where'd you came out with this method!!?
It worked perfectly!!
THANKS A LOT
thx man it work for me 2 was going to buy a new 1 but this save me some cash thx
it totally worked for me. THANKS!!!!
This appears to have worked for me, been charging for about 15 minutes now. Before it would turn off either instantly after unplugging or within 30 seconds, and on plugging it in would tell me the battery was either full or empty. Now it says low with the red light on, thanks for the video!
Brilliant! Worked liked a charm. Thanks!
Genius!! Thanks buddy!
Thanks you so much atleats now it's recharging i dont know how long it lasts yet but atleast it's recharging which it didnt do before.
IT WORKS! YES! Thanks man
Amazing, thank you....charging now!
Thanks for the video!
Thank you so much.....this video helped me a lot
no did not
That's ok, try the procedure a few times. I've noticed if it doesn't get hot right away, try tapping it a few times to the terminals 2 & 5, even if it doesn't get hot this procedure can still work.
worked after the 4th or 5th try. Thanks
I thought this didn't work until i took some rubbing alcohol and applied to to the pins. Thank you!!!
Wow that actually worked......ty...
thanks man...so great trick...with just 1 try can charge my battery pack...
thumbs up...=)
thank u so much worked for me
Lifesaver! Thanks
Thank you thank you thank you!! Great tip.:)
I cannot believe it!!! It worked, thank you very much for the tip, now i can play minecraft haha, thx man!
Thanks man. this works. Its charging now. But i have to rub the connectors with the paperclip if not nothing really happens.
Holy crap , it worked . My battery didn't work for over a year . Thanks
