- I know a lot really hate the Default Hud for whatever reason, but I made this video to explain why I personally love the Default Hud, and why I don't think it's as bad as people say it is.

Another big reason why I personally prefer to use custom HUDs is because they often move important information more towards the center of your screen, which is ideally where you want to be keeping your eyes most of the time since that's where your crosshair is. But like you said, it's totally down to preference. Someone who uses the default HUD that should also be mentioned is b4nny, who is considered one of the best TF2 players in the world. So I wouldn't say that installing a custom HUD gives you an advantage. Custom HUDs just give people more options to use whatever they're most comfortable with. Would be nice TF2 had built-in custom HUD support in the advanced options so more people could have easier access to more game customization.

Omg first comment hello uncle dane😀
Hi Uncle Dane
Thats a lot of letters
Hey guys, it's the sentry man
That's something uncle Dane would say, not the context but the way he says it
The default hud has this feeling that no other tf2 hud has. It reminds me of when I first started out, and knew nothing.
same it gives me a sense of nostalgia when i played tf2 a long time ago where i knew nothing
I like toon hud because it reminds me of the default hud I just don’t like how everything was at the bottom
@@sleepynt2839 Me 2
I use deli hud the menu is the same as default so it still had that nostalgic feeling that the default one has
Yup
Custom HUDs are the "gaming chair" of TF2:
"Did you see that guy? How is he so good at the game?"
"He must have a very good hud!"
i dont have a gaming chair but that doesn't mean im not gamer. : /
HUDs are like any other customizable element in every game, like how the osu! community tells people that they got good because they used a different skin from the default. The default skin for osu! sucks tho.
@@grouchyguytdmalt5291 thats the point. Its something people often think is more important then it really is
The default hud is fine I dealt with it for 3 years before getting toon hud because I liked it bwttwr
@@grouchyguytdmalt5291 lol yes is does
Default HUD = Best HUD!
Ok maybe it isn't but I still like it.
The Default HUD, is pretty good
I've been using the default hud for 9 months until I changed it because custom huds give you hitmarkers and it's really helpful imo
I will never switch my HUD
I installed tf2 in 2015 and wont change it
"The Default Hud is fair and balanced."
yeah, I'd just like an option to have bigger damage numbers, I mean maybe the option is there and I just somehow missed it but I ain't fuckin' hawkeye here, I can't see such tiny numbers in th middle of battle
I never saw a real problem with the default hud, yeah it's not perfect but neither is custom HUDs, to me alotta custom huds just look really obnoxious and not flitting in a game like tf2 artsrtle wise and end up looking way too bright, that's just me though, both have their ups and downs and it's all down to preference
precise
Art style
My problem is that custom HUD usually looks either too flashy, too minimalistic, too boxy, or the colors look too flat. The default HUD is just the most aesthetically pleasing to look at for me (even though I also use the improved default HUD he use).
@@_freezingfrost_6515 My opinion exactly. Tho I have been thinking of using the overwatch hud, but I'll probably stick to the default.
Improved default hud is really good.
Default HUD is honestly a "if it aint broke, dont fix it." Ive been using this HUD since I started playing in 2011 and Im just too used to it now.

This is why I love the Middle Mann HUD. It's got all the benefits of good custom HUDs, like having metal count and Uber percent just below your crosshair, while still keeping the aesthetic of the original and overall game
Agreed entirely. I use Middle Mann and it helps a ton with playing the game. Easy to read.
The Default HUD isn't bad, it's just that there are better HUDs that solver problems deafult has
Yea, it gets the job done, right?
Well said
@CheesusCrustTheCheesyBoi So?
not for me though i have to run tf2 with a config to lower the graphs and if i used a custom hud my pc would just die
An explanation as to why everyone's game looks different, finally, I now understand everything
To be honest the default HUD is so charming to me that I never bothering thinking about getting a mod to replace it.
I never thought of changing my default Hud ever, it serves it purpose by simply telling what you need to know of character's status. I still haven't in over a decade of TF2, but I been considered it
Ive used the default hud for 4 years and honestly, It isnt bad. Sure, theres better options, but i guess i kinda like simplicity of it.
I just like the design, in all honesty. The asymmetric trapezoids they put things like your ammo and Über percentage on are really endearing, and just fit so well with TF2, while most custom HUDs seem obsessed with removing them and putting plain old numbers straight onto the gameplay.
thank you for making me relise fast weapon switch existed
If b4nny doesn’t use a custom HUD and he’s where he is I’m sure that says a lot about not needing one at all
Silence commie, stars and stripes beat hammer and sickle,LOOK IT UP🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Well, he plays with everything low and 4:3
Æ Even more reasoning for my point, that’s why I admire him
that's what i thought aswell
I’m sure a lot of people prefer custom huds, I mean I use one myself. But something b4nny said himself is that downloading all this custom stuff and configs doesn’t make you better
I've used default for so many years that a custom one would distract me as much as swapping my keys around.
the default HUD is like Hi-Points. actually pretty decent but everyone likes to trash on it.
Not nearly as memey as Hi-Point though. Maybe once Valve opens an online poll to revamp it and they replace the crit indicator with a yeet indicator they'll be more comparable.
I get what you're saying but hi points are direct blowback which isn't good for pistols
@@YoBoyNeptune while true, they are built to take abuse so as long as you aren't taking it through gauntlets every other day it should last a fairly long time. and even if something breaks they have their warranty and they fix it and send it back for free.
I dont even know why hi-point is hated on, and im too afraid to ask honestly
Although it cant be worse than Zip-22
The only real issue is the magazine spring sometimes needs to be adjusted when you first open it up from what I've been told.
One thing that I like the default HUD for is that the info is all in solid color boxes, makes reading stuff like ammo easier on the fly

You got me to use the Improved Default Hud, and I'm loving the change. It organizes my stats better and displays teammate's health better, yet retains the classic look.
I really like the default HUD, because it just looks nice and polished.
The team colored boxes, the TF2 fonts, it all just fits in nicely and doesn't look out of place.
What the default HUD really needs is some QoL improvements.
Being able to have Status conditions (Fire, resistances, milk, slowdown, etc.) show up under your crosshair would be so much better.
And maybe increase the size of the Health bar a little bit or at least have an option to do so, to make it more noticable.
I always wanted those affects to appear on your character in the bottom left, because I have no idea what its user for read right now
It does what a hud needs to do, yes there are better ones, but the default hud is the grandpa that thought you how to drive a car. Old and not really up to date, but it still works.
FINALLY SOMEONE WHO HAS MY LOVE GOR THE DEFAULT HUD

lets just appreciate we can use our own huds at all this is pretty much the only game i know that allows this

I actually used Rays HUD initially, and then I switched back to the default HUD because I genuinely preferred it.
Oh boy, going all out on the default HUD(even though it hasn't been updated in a while)!
And there is even one HUD (I forgot the name) which moves everything to the center of the screen in a Vertical formation which is the best HUD to use when recording TH-cam Shorts and Tik Toks since it allows the Viewer to actually see the information while watching and not have that information off screen
Middle mann?
@@RandomGreenKirb Yeah yeah yeah I think thats the one!
I see you made a video based on our Discussion in SquimJim's Server few days ago ;)
I kinda planned this vid couple weeks ago lol
@@RocketManFran Still a Great video nonetheless :P
The lip sync on the soldier is actually is incredibly well done
Props to you for making it in the tf2 community it's hard to make videos without an output of content
Two things the stock hud does better than the others
1) allows me to see team status, since it’s very convenient for spy checking
2) let’s me see other info besides my k/d ratio
Bruh, I’ve been playing tf2 since early 2017 and I have almost 1000 hours and I still use the default hud.
Im using my configuration of toonshud, every information is just more accessible
Preferring to playing games as they're designed to be played.
And not like, "oh the game gets good when you install this, this, and also that." While sure you can do that when you finish a single-player game on vanilla or do custom maps, same way players do cheats after completing the main game, like GTA or Skyrim even.
But I wouldn't necessarily go out to say that the original game and it's settings are inferior to the mods.
It is inferior when as a spy you can't see the exact health of enemies
My favorite part of Rays HUD is the customizability. Sure, when I first got it it was the same as everyone else's who got it. But after a many hours of fine tuning, I feel like I really made it my own.
Despite saying "this video is about **why** I personally like the default hud" you never went into depth on that at all, you just sidetracked into talking about custom huds. I wanna know, man.
Personally I think it suits the artstyle well, and the lighter contrast helps me focus better on the game.
thanks for the tip, I'll try and work on that
shut up
I agree, I think it just suits the game best
@@acethesnailsnail3470 agressive moment
I know right? When he started wrapping up the video I thought; "Wait, that's it?"
i like the default hud because it perfectly fits the theme of TF2 (as it should because it was designed for it). a big part of the reason why i got into TF2 was the style/theme of the game and changing the hud takes away a lot of the charm the game has.
Dude, I was going back to using default hud today and TH-cam just recommended this to me
I personally think the default HUD's style fits the style of TF2 pretty well. Honestly I'd like a custom HUD that still uses elements from the default HUD or just keeps the style matching withing TF2.
Too bad tf2 has little to no options to change, modify your default hud
CSGO rn has given a good amount of options for the player to match their preferences
I just want a default hud but the health and ammo counters are just twice as big
The Default HUD is just as silly as it needs to be for this game.
This is not a "cool game" what needs a Sci-fi , glass like HUD.
I just use a HUD with text on the screen (toonhud) I don't need no sci fi font flashy color thing
Me: Sees This Video
Also Me: Instals A Custom HUD
Also Also Me: Oh God My Mussel Memory
to me, the default HUD just fits. its style screams TF2 to me, so i find any of the custom HUDs that make it more bare-bones just kinda. . . ugly.
The reason I don’t like the default hud is because health and ammo are placed in bottom corners of the screen, witch makes it very hard to see, there were times where I thought I had full ammo only to find out I’m out of ammo, there were times I thought I had full health only to find out I had 20% or lower on health, some elements of the default HUD are too big and block the screen like when I’m spectating someone or in ctf, and like you said in the video, it’s buggy as hell.
I use Toonhud (more specifically my customized version of it)
It fixes everything I hated about the default HUD, and honestly it matches TF2 more then the default HUD.
Yeah, I don’t see anything wrong with the default hud, it matches with the art style of the game, and it’s somewhat not in your face, the one couple things I would maybe change is the size of the numbers for health and a couple other things, but all and all I love it, but I prefer Sunset hud which I’m sure you know ;D
I really enjoy your SFM animations used in this video!! They look top notch!!
I've been playing with the default hud since day one!! for over 8 years now!!
So I must say I could never change it!
i prefer the default hud over any other custom hud. everytime i use a custom one, i see myself always nitpicking something about it (font, text size, button layout, colors, etc) and changing huds constantly. i also think custom huds look bad in terms of the TF2's aesthetic.
I don’t know how but I missed a rocketmanfran video when I shouldn’t
In every game, I always stick to the default. For me personally, the default hud is not bad. It could limit your view but that why there's sounds (that what I use to locate enemies when their out of sight). If I had a custom hud I can quickly adjust myself to using the defualt hud when I want to. It doesn't really matter which hud is the best or not. Like RocketMan said, pick a hud that suits you.
i play tf2 for 7-8 years now i always used the default HUD yea its sometimes buggy but i dont mind it reminds me how i started and how i have grown in tf2
For me personally, I just like how compact most custom huds are. My health and my ammo being on opposite sides of the screen as default is kinda awkward for me.
yea thats abt my only complaint for default hud which doesnt seem as big an issue when ur playing in 4:3.
I've tried out a bunch of different HUDs, and personally I like the ones that look close to the default HUD and use the actual TF2 font but are just an "improved" version while keeping the TF2 style instead of just being numbers all over your screen
2:18
My reason for using custom huds: i heard that the stock one is causing lag to my game (i run tf2 around -1 - 30fps) so i tried, and i cant tell a difference as each map changes how much fps i have, as well as projectiles
Wait default causes fps drops? Ive never heard of anything like that.
As someone with potato pc i need to hear about this
@Dam Sen me
This coats my heart with nostalgia whenever I see by default HUD.
For the best of both, use the built in minimize hud, it's really good for what it is
Im a rayshud fan until the day I die. On my deathbed my life will flash before my eyes as my health bar decreases. But I smile as my health is presented to my through rayshud.
You’re Choice is justified
I like the Stock Hud because its feels right at home.
I like the default hud i just like the fact budhud has an animated background
Great content. If these were uploaded in 2012 thru 2014 you would have been ranked up there with Star, Lazy Purple, Jerma etc.
If only I didn't have a crappy PC back then :/
This is the first time TH-cam has recommended your channel to me, and I was pleasantly surprised by what I found!
Just some quick, constructive criticism for the video:
1. The video is well edited! The transitions are well placed, the music choices are appropriate, and your use of inserted images and text help move the video along.
2. I like the effort you put into adding SFM animations here and there, just to spice things up.
3. You have a good speaking voice. There's a good balance between being professional and personal, while not having too much of that "fake TH-camr" voice (it still creeps in here and there, but it's not distracting).
4. The script could use a little work. For as short as this video is, you tend to repeat your points quite a bit, which ends up adding a lot of fluff. Perhaps work on being more concise for you next video.
Otherwise, great video! Considering most people don't post enough constructive feedback for up-and-coming TH-camrs, I thought give you some, because it's clear you have some talent for content creation. Keep up the great work, and I look forward to seeing what you publish next! :)
Thanks for the tips! I'll make sure to work on my script writing more! :)
None of the custom HUDs really fit the games art style, which is why I use the default HUD.
I don't really care for HUDs so I don't get what's the problem with default. It's fine for me as it is
I personally like the default HUD because it just fits with TF2’s artstyle (not that it is bad to have one that doesn’t necessarily fit) and I’m happy you like it too!
In general, this video was great and just very nicely made. You made something that feels like a friendly discussion between two sides that can agree to disagree, instead of the alternative.
Also, I see you have great taste in youtubers. These are some of my personal favorites
You forgot other reasons to why most people prefer to select other HUDs.
Like people would rather have most of their info closer to the center of the screen to save time when in mid-battle, or its more cleaner than the Default Hud which contains stuff like solid colors, unneeded geometry, unreactive information (ie, overheal doesnt actually show it's overheal considering it contains the same color as if you had normal hp), better UI organisation.
If theres a way to configure the default hud's reactivity, opacity, position, then more people would still keep the same DefHud
Thanks for the tip! :)
never knew it had bugs, will change to the improved version since I love this classic but don't want disadvantages 👍
What’s the music that plays at 0:22?
Rocket man - elton john
The default hud is well readable, oozing with style, perfectly fit the game's art style and not too distracting, custom huds usually only tick 1 or 2 of these 4 checkboxes, being easy to read, either stylish or none distracting, but not fit the art style at all and either boring, or distracting.
Middle mann and darhud have been some of the very few Huds I think ticks all of these boxes
They're stylized, fits the art style, more readable then default, and not too distracting
It took me nearly 100 hrs. To find the fov command -_-
Toon Hud is my personal favorite hud to use. I just love it when games have the option to give it your own personal touch.
funny i use default hud but the classic one where its only a img of the character and not idle 3D that breathing n stuff
I use the image one as well, it helps me get better FPS
Finally! Someone understands me! :D
Great video!
I personally fuckin' love the default hud. I don't play the game seriously, so I don't care about "optimization" or "visual clutter". It looks nice, is functional, and easy on the eyes with everything being kinda rounded.
What I almost never see people talking about is that little player icon to the bottom-left -- the animated one with all the cosmetics. It always looked really cool, and it would be nice to see my Medic or Disguised Spy or something sitting there while I play, and I never hear anyone say what it's called.
the default HUD is actually really nice and i do enjoy playing with it
This is one of my first times watching your vids and when I heard "let's talk about that" my mind instantly jumped to Good Mythical Morning lmao.
the default hud definitely brings back memories...
I grew up using the default hud; I also used a few custom huds out of curiosity, but only used them for a bit. I just kept coming back to the default one because it grew on me and I actually really love how it looks, just like what others have said it also fits the TF2 art style very well
Flawhud fits really well with the tf2 style. It's what I imagine an MUI hud for tf2 to look like.
The thing with how TF2 health is recorded is that it basically has only two states that are the loudest. >50% hp causes the health to be colored white while
I personally use toonhud myself because of it's endless customization and I respect people that had over hundreds of hours into this game who still use the current hud that valve set
To me the Default HUD is nostalgic, back in the days where you first started, you dont know about consoles and changing your FOV, your quick swap isnt on, did all the training sessions, and officially become a part of TF2 community and many adventures ahead
I was using default hud for pretty long time but recently i started doubting. Thank you for saving my hud purity (maybe almost, i think i should take improved one)
Hey man thanks for telling about the improved default HUD because I installed it and it's pretty darn nice!
I model mine after Dane but added captions because I'm deaf and made the crosshair and all the text green. Default HUD has round corners and gradients and everything is far from the crosshair which I can't stand when I'm more reliant on visual information w/out extra clutter. I feel like a hud can inheritely benefit someone in performance, but it's definitely more preferance than FOV or weapon switch.
"And for some reason, fast weapon switch is disabled"
GOOD!
I’ve never been interested in changing my hud in TF2 because imo the other huds don’t really have the same feel as the default hud.
I also disable to player model on the hud because I find it nostalgic since that’s how vanilla TF2 looked like back when I started playing on console.
I love the simplicity of the default, it shows you everything you need to know and doesn't shove you a bunch of info that can be distracting when they're right in the centre of the screen. Also the nostalgia effect that someone else mentioned also makes me very biased towards default but what really would make it perfect is a hud customization system that Dane mentioned, but I would love one that goes as deep as ArmA 3, since you can change basically everything, you can make it so the killfeed is right at the centre of your screen so you know when that pesky spy is fucking up your team again lmao, but yeah I love when games give you that much liberty for basically brewing your own perfect gaming experience
(btw I really love your style of video, of no overexaggerated voice pitch and changes in it, straight to the point with good background music taste, and better of all still coming up with creative topics about a game that is over 12 years old, looking forward for more! *but remember you can always play other games to avoid being burnt out from tf2 and even upload them, don't listen to the toxic part of the community that will pillage cities just because their favourite tf2 utuber didn't upload their #1937 stale milked-to-death topic tf2 video)
i grew up with the defult hud and couldnt get away from it everytime i was thinking about getting a custom hud i thought about old times and just left the hud section
I actually use the default hud. It isn't as bas as people make it seem. Custom huds are awesome but sometimes I find myself going back to the default hud
Honestly Fran I love ur end video credit song it's so nice and clean
i personally use the default hud because i feel comfortable and i am just too lazy to go and search for another hud, i think you did good for this video i liked the lay out keep up the good work fran.
what i like about vanilla is that everything is not cluttered in the center of the screen. shit shouldnt be in the center because its "eAsiEr To SeE", and i cant imagine playing this game with all the info stuck into a little box in the middle of your view. thats just my opinion
I don't use custom huds is because I grew up with the default hud and never thought to change it . I love seeing it every time i start a game and it makes me feel nostalgic as f*ck when I see other people use it, yes its broken but i dont ever use the parts that are as long as it tells me my ammo and health correctly im good. Thank you for this, you are not alone.
I forget what option it was, but when I first started playing tf2, the hud was as clustered as final fantasy 14 online. So instead of looking up online and learning about custom huds. I went into the settings and found an option for a simpler hud. I've been using it ever since, and honestly I like it.

It's just really nice to customize everything, you get to make your own HUD, basically.
Short and sweet, while still staying very informative. Good video
The default hud has the bright red and blu and cartoony look, sharing a similar charm with the rest of the game.
the default HUD is genuinely the only one i can use because others look so unusual
