From what I have read this song is about an orphan bride who goes to the river to speak to her deceased parents. In pagan Russia the river was the boundary between the living and the dead. She goes there for blessings from her parents. The dancers are river spirits. She is saying that she is to be married and has no one to bless her, that the house is full of guests and there are horses in the courtyard. The scary words she says are her mother speaking. It seems that during marriages sad songs would be sung to scare away evil spirits.
Water was the boundary with the world of the dead in northern European pre Cristian culture. Hence the bog mummies found in England, Denmark and Ireland.

When the Romans left Britain there were groups of peoples who crossed the channel. We loosely use the term 'Anglo Saxon' .. when these people were Germanic tribes .. Angles, Saxons, Jutes, Frisians and others who all spoke West German dialects. Their descendants speaking 'Anglo Saxon' would have been able to speak with Norwegians .. leastwise with hand gestures and such but there was a commonality of ancestral language and culture. Vikings held sway for centuries o ver parts of Russia, Belarus and the Ukraine. It is not surprising at all that there are many common elements in our present cultures.

The first part is her mother asking why she isn't happy, most of the rest is her explaining her sad situation. In the end she decides to let the river-spirits carry her away. It's haunting and melancholy, and also beautiful and moving! And she delivered this *powerful* performance at the age of *only 14 years old!* Stunning and amazing! My 1st time listening to Dee Aunna and the song. Have to say I really like her voice, she surprised me a few times with her voice inflections and style. She gave that song a tribal style that may have been how you would think it would of sounded. I.E. authentic. very very unique and really enjoyed :). Thanks M&G and whoever requested it. As far as the emotional impact of Diana and her putting the audience into trance-Diana says that she much prefers to sing songs that have serious meaning rather than just good sound, and to do so she goes into a trance herself before starting to sing. When the judges hit their buttons she said she did not even notice! Have a listen/look at "Finicky (Fastidious) Horses", the song of a dying man who hasn't finished his desired tasks, and notice the tears in her eyes at the finale. She was told by all concerned that she was not grown up enough to sing it. Ha! The desperation of dying too soon is palpable. I've been a music aficionado for well over 60 years and I'll bet I've listened to Diana more than any other musician in my collection (now over 4000 albums)! I never tire of listening to her perform. There's an entire catalogue of performances ranging from 10 years old ( and even all the way back to 5 years old) When Diana was adopted by Irina Ponik and her daughter Anastasia Diana barely speaking due to the trauma and abuse suffered at the hands of her birth mother. Irina was advised to take Diana to singing classes to aid her speech and the rest is history. God bless 🙏

The song really reminds me of "She Moves Through the Fair." It is, however, MUCH older. Apparently, the original dates from somewhere around the 13th century and has long been lost. 14 years old - hooked me 4 years ago and still my favorite of hers -- slavic story telling theater -- good as it gets -- she built on her vocals but this is brilliant --
The song is from an old traditional folk tale about an orphaned girl who is supposed to marry someone she doesn't love, so she goes to the river (the border between the living and the dead) to talk to her mother and get her advice. The first part is her mother asking why she isn't happy, most of the rest is her explaining her sad situation. In the end she decides to let the river-spirits carry her away. It's haunting and melancholy, and also beautiful and moving! And she delivered this *powerful* performance at the age of *only 14 years old!* Stunning and amazing!

My 1st time listening to Dee Aunna and the song. Have to say I really like her voice, she surprised me a few times with her voice inflections and style. As far as the emotional impact of Diana and her putting the audience into trance-Diana says that she much prefers to sing songs that have serious meaning rather than just good sound, and to do so she goes into a trance herself before starting to sing. When the judges hit their buttons she said she did not even notice!
Have a listen/look at "Finicky (Fastidious) Horses", the song of a dying man who hasn't finished his desired tasks, and notice the tears in her eyes at the finale. She was told by all concerned that she was not grown up enough to sing it. Ha! The desperation of dying too soon is palpable.
I've been a music aficionado for well over 60 years and I'll bet I've listened to Diana more than any other musician in my collection (now over 4000 albums)! I never tire of listening to her perform.

I believe this is from an old Russian folk tale about an orphan girl who finds solace in the river, ( in Russian and Celtic mythology the river is the bridge between the living and dead ) in the song she sings about how in life she has things, horses, guess in the house, but she can't smile or be happy, her only solace the river .

There's an entire catalogue of performances ranging from 10 years old ( and even all the way back to 5 years old) When Diana was adopted by Irina Ponik and her daughter Anastasia Diana barely speaking due to the trauma and abuse suffered at the hands of her birth mother. Next should be Human. She stated in an interview that she can't sing this song (Rechenka) during her concerts because it drains her emotionally and is very stressful vocally. Her cover of Rag'n'Bone Man "Human" on the other hand is done in her natural low tone. She says there is no stress on her vocals and can sing it over and over. It is important to remember that a diminutive in Russian is not about smaller, but more like a familiar name for someone/something close to you, eg. "dear river".

The song really reminds me of "She Moves Through the Fair." It is, however, MUCH older. Apparently, the original dates from somewhere around the 13th century and has long been lost. There are many versions about. It definitely adds to this listening if you have access to a translation, and there are a few out there, some even direct translations of the version Diana is singing.
So much more could be said about this. Diana is an orphan; and this song is about an orphan girl. Diana's life is quite a story in itself. From her birth in a small town near Vladivostok to where she is living now, in Moscow -- it has been a long road for her. She's such an inspiration. She almost didn't make it. At three years old she was left by her mother in the cold with a broken collar bone and was rescued from a bus stop, freezing to death, by the woman you see here who adopted her. I have heard that her mother is trying to find her to demand money, but Diana has lots of friends and supporters and she is being protected.
