I went to the one in Chicago. My parents took me to the event. I passed the qualifying round and my parents wouldn't take me back on Sunday for the quarterfinals cause it was about an hour drive. Oh, memories. Those were the days. Come to think of it, this event was just a big marketing campaign for the Gameboy and that silly movie with Fred Savage called The Wizard, which itself was a huge commercial for Super Mario Bros 3. HAHAHA Now I'm old enough to see it from that perspective.
I remember Thor Aackerlund promoting a game on QVC back in 1990. I think it was Big Nose The Caveman. He actually was playing and making it look pretty easy. Good memories

Hahahaha, the mullet guy from the second season of Video Power! Me and a friend attended Powerfest 1990 at Universal Studios Hollywood. We enlisted into the qualifying rounds. I made it onto the stage and was able to sit in a giant throne while the others had to stand :) But then I would lose :( Was able to some free swag like the NWC hat and a Mario doll. It was a great experience !! This is a great video! Thanks for the memories !

Does anyone remember a person sitting in a specially positioned chair, almost like a throne, in between the two giant screens on the main stage? When I went to the Cincinnati PF, it looked like Howard Phillips, or some kid, and everyone was wondering if this person was the champion overlooking his would-be competition. He never left his spot, never looked up from his game playing, never smiled. It was odd.
@TheEgg185 Actually, they did something sort of like this recently for the Wii; it was called the "Wii Summer Games 2010". The selection of games wasn't as good, though. While there were challenges for New Super Mario Bros. and Mario Kart, they also had challenges for Wii Sports Resort and Wii Fit. It also wasn't an invite-only event like the World Championships; anyone could participate from the get-go.
This was so fun! I was there when I was 9 years old. I've got some old memorabilia from it that I'm getting ready to put on E-Bay.. With the retro craze I'm thinking there may be an interest in this stuff. I have a T-Shirt, Hat, old ticket stubs, copies of the actual Nintendo World Championships we played plus a give away one. They are kinda weird carts, not sure if anyone would really want them. I have a grey one that was actually used when we competed and a Gold one that was a give away. (They are basically the same game best I remember) They have this weird switch like thing on them.. Kinda cool I guess. I also have some of the paper work from being invited to it. Pictures that were taken there and a trophy. Looking to sale all of it for $50.00 bucks if anyone is interested. (I'm willing to negotiate) My Dad flipped out on me when he found out I kept the cart I played on there. I just kinda took it haha! I'll put a link up once I get it on E-Bay. I went to the Powerfest. I don't remember if it was 90 or 91. Maybe 90 because the Game Boy was brand new. That was pretty cool as a little kid. I didn't go compete but they had the big screens there and stuff. I just ran around trying all the new games. I remember Yo Noid and Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom the most... Played tons of gameboy games too.
sometimes the graphics don't even really suck, if you look harder the big advantage new games have is realism, but if realism were quality then there would be a lot fewer cartoons in the world
It's funny because back in the day, it had actually effort put into them, now we're getting ecelebs playing the latest casual products just to market them towards us (the audience), can't wait to see what competitive edge Sm4sh, Splatoon and Pokemon ORAS have over Tetris lol.

@MisterShow1986 if Nintendo ran the competition and called it the world championships, then it was the world championships. if anyone from latin america or japan felt that strongly about it, there were no nationality restrictions at the door... they couldve hopped on a plane and made the trip.
As previous comments hinted toward, They should do this again. Except with SNES. NES is good, but 16 bits has that extra edge graphics need to avoid "what is that supposed to be?" and that choppy/flickering graphics and there are more games like Tetris Attack or F1 that are easy to compete with.
The 90s was the golden age of gaming for sure. Glad I got to experience it as a kid
