It's interesting that with many of these 4K releases, we're going into to realms of enhancement rather than restoration. This movie, although shot with prime lenses, was Super 35 and the cropping on film stock at the time would have resulted in a typically grainy image. Fine, but the colours of the previous Blu-ray were quite typical of what you would expect to see at the time, faults and all. For instance, shots during the volleyball scene have always looked inconsistent, because the camera was shooting at a higher frame-rate to induce slow motion in post, meaning less light was allowed to enter the camera and under-exposed certain shots, which creates colour shifts. This 4K Blu-ray removes such inconsistencies, which on the one hand is fine, but it's just worth pointing that what looks great isn't always authentic to the original medium.
Gonna say man, your videos are an absolute treat. I've recently started collecting 4K's after upgrading my tv, been collecting standard blurays for a while but just more exciting being able to collect your favourite films on the best quality available to us. Anyone thanks for doing these review videos, can't get enough of them!
I have a question about the audio. As an ex Rolls-Royce technologist I was always very disappointed with the sequences when the F-14s light up the afterburner before getting chucked off the front of the boat. Having stood behind both F-14s and Soviet Foxbat displaying at the Farnborough air show, both put out huge amounts of low frequency energy that should give the subs a good work out. But on the DVD and Blu-ray versions it's all compressor and turbine noise. Has this been addressed on this 4K remaster.
Almost every movie i get from Amazon has a broken case with a piece inside. They must have a guy whose job it it to break the Blu Ray cases before shipping.
Top tip: Buy a bunch of amaray cases off eBay - that way not only can you replace the broken cases from Amazon, but it also enables you to buy second-hand blu rays and make them look new simply by replacing the case.
@@shinedown54 6 out of 10. I guess I was expecting a lot of pop outs. Like most 3D movies very few pop outs but lots of depth. Since 3D has pretty much died in North America if you can find a copy you should get it.
The 3D is average, to be fair. More like a pop up Xmas card compared to a state of the art 3D film such as Guardians of the Galaxy. However, I showed the 3D version on projector to a friend. Top Gun is his favourite film. He was blown away by the 3D - most people are unaware how great 3D is until it is viewed on a domestic projector. Usually better than cinemas which fail to project at double light and then the image can look very grey.
rhulani Mashila Yes it was converted from 2D to 3D, but the 3D is, in my opinion, a much better way to view the film than the standard 2D. Most 3D movies are conversions from 2D to 3D (exceptions are Avatar, Alita and Julia to name some of a very small bunch). The conversion houses are now so technically good that it is hard to tell it is ‘fake 3D’, and films like SAN Andreas actually extend the 3D we naturally see (if you have looked through a pair of expensivel binoculars you might notice extended 3D).
I got the remastered 1080p bluray that was released as a limited collectors edition. And I've gotta say that it's also very well done and you can see more detail and the colors are also more life like.
Sounds like it’s a must have, I remember around 1990 when I was shopping for my AVR surround sound system, many stores used the original Top Gun VHS tape as a demo, and the fly overs were so realistic you naturally looked up as the sound moved over your head. Great selling point. So when does the TG sequel come out? I’ve been seeing YT previews about a new release soon.
I have the DVD SE version and compared to the Blu-Ray it was slightly better, but the 4K is a huge leap , thank goodness for the Dolby Atmos , this is one of my demo discs when ppl come round.
Jordan23_ funny you mention that as I’ve been debating jaws and it’s an ironic story. Last July 2019 I was wanting to watch Jaws again as it had been at least 10+ years since I watched it. I looked through my large Blu-Ray collection and realized I never actually purchased it on Blu-Ray but I found my old DVD copy. I scoured around the internet and didn't see any 4K Blu-ray so I went ahead and purchased the newest ”Remastered In 4K” Blu-ray with digital copy and now less than a year later, the 4K will be out. I only paid $6.99 for the Blu-ray on Amazon, so I could in theory still buy the 4K as I didn't pay much for it.
You already got it?? Holy sh*t! I actually watched "Top Gun" in the theater with my (then) boyfriend, who was about a week out from entering the Navy for a career, which he is now retired from. I've had some weird ambivalence about getting this 4K, lol. About 1,800+ mph, BTW 🙂.
I'd really like to see you compare the newly restored Blu-ray disc in this package compared to the older one and to the 4K version. Does it trump the old one and how close in quality is it to the 4K? Many of us without a 4K setup might purchase based on such comparisons.
Unless you are talking about an SR71, no plane or planes are flying at thousands of miles an hour. The F14 is good for about 1,550 MPH with the other planes in this movie somewhat less. I enjoy your reviews. I also worked for Grumman in the '70s and did work on F14, E2C, EA6B development as well as tings that wnt BOOOOM and glowed in the dark.
Man anytime I wanna know the real deal on 4k movie..... I com e here. Youou just made my decision very easy. Top Gun here I come!! Woo hoo!! Can't wait to hear this in my new home theater set-up!! Thank you for the awesome information. You're the man homie...
It's not quite the 35th anniversary, but the sequel, "Top Gun: Maverick," is scheduled to be released in December so that's as good a reason as any to release the 4K of the original movie now...
I don't have a ATMOS receiver. I had the old bluray and that sounded great with jets zooming by. Now I sold it and bought the 4k and with the same setup the ATMOS doesn't give me that effect. Now the 4k I found looks great because they added a yellowish tint to the movie which I have never seen in VHS, BETA, laserdisc, dvd or bluray.
ordered this today....can't wait....i also am getting a whole new system samsung Q90T in 85 in...panasonic 9000 blue ray player and the Sonos Arc 5.1 system....so excited i can hardly wait...cheers and be safe all
ICA Mitchell - If you were going to see a 35mm print of War of the Worlds would you be worried it would be "too grainy"? Pretty sure Janusz Kaminski and Steven Spielberg knew what they were doing there.
@@TomlinsonHolman52583 Yes, they knew what they were doing. And I also known what I like -- natural filmic grain, not fake intentional grain to mimic the look of poor 16mm film. collider.com/war-of-the-worlds-blu-ray-review/?amp
I have a ? when are you releasing your videos being released for War of the Worlds 4k and Days of Thunder 4k? And where do you get your early 4k releases from?
Thanks for the review Jeff. I just picked up this 4K here in the UK. Wanted to watch the original, prior to seeing the new Maverick film at the Cinema next weekend.
Still rocking 1080p, would you say the new Blu Ray looks better than the original Blu Ray, or is it the same old transfer? Might upgrade for the better sound alone, but hope the picture was improved on the Blu Ray also! I've been buying certain movies as they are released on 4k even though I don't have a 4k tv yet, knowing one day, that'll be reason enough to finally upgrade!
I never understood why they put older formats bundled together with new. DVDs on Blu-rays and Blu-rays on 4K Blu-ray releases. Just odd, I'd never touch the Blu-ray if I got a 4K player. And I would never buy a 4K movie If I didn't own a 4K player. Nobody buys 4K movies who doesn't own a player.
Really? The audio was clean and crisp, but I didn’t find much on the overheads. I find the opening to MadMax Fury Road, or Blade Runner 2049 have a lot more information on the overheads.
I don't mind if there's a little grain, but Top Gun's epic opening sequence (orange sky with planes taking off on the carrier) had so much grain I found it almost unwatchable on my big projector screen. As you say "you shouldn't really see the grain when you're far enough from the screen", I hope that will be solved, but I'm very skeptical. They often keep the grain in the movie so it wouldn't look too 'digital', but they should take into account that the screen sizes keep getting bigger and details and blurry picture becomes more obvious when originality is kept.
Picked this up a little while ago in the steel book. Just watched it on the weekend, looked awesome! Audio was good, except I didn’t really pick up anything in the overhead channels. Either way it was a fun ride :)
The Tomcat's top speed is 2.34 mach about 1,544 mph. So, not quite "thousands of miles an hour". And generally they have to operate below the speed of sound. Great video, looks like a great release, I've seen TOO GUN countless times. But I've never owned. I think it's time to rectify that oversight.
I have this disk and was wondering if you noticed any artifacting around some to the jets as they flew past quickly? I also noticed something that really stood out, why the heck is everyone so sweaty in this movie?!
I have the 3D - easier to get here in the UK - and if ever a film deserved to benefit from 3D, this is the one. This is a post conversion from 2D to 3D. You can still view 3D at home in the US. It does mean buying a suitable projector, e.g. Sony VPL series, and buying 3D glasses or buying a PlayStation 4 games console with VR headset. The PS4 plays 3D. 3D TV’s went out of production worldwide as not much 3D content except films has been made available and people just won’t wear special glasses unless they want to watch a film.

Thanks for the review! Kindly consider doing a review of the blu-ray disc that's in the set as well in your future videos. For me I have not got into 4K yet but if the blu-ray video is better than the previous release, I would purchase the set for the remastered blu-ray. Thanks man, be safe and take care!

What is the colour timing like, teal like the 3D?
He said (in the video) that it's much better on this release.
I would say it’s not teal, it’s a much more natural color.
Hello Jeff,
I just popped this movie in, the 4k version suppose to have that yellowish tone ? Wondering if is my tv lol. How did it look on your end?
I wouldn’t say mine is yellowish. Check your TV settings for color temperature. You may like a cooler color
I don’t like the design of its slip cover.
I’ll wait for the steel book to be released in coming Dec.
Looking forward to seeing both the original & TOP GUN: MAVERICK as a 4k combo set.
