Mountain Top Removal Lament - aka Almost Leveled

- This was inspired by the recent EPA approval of 42 new Mountain Top Removal permits that pave the way (literally) for the destruction of more West Virginia hills that just can't be replaced. If you don't know, MTR is what used to be called "strip mining" but taken to a whole new level. The mountain is blasted to bits and shoved into the water carrying valleys below. Take a look at a google map satellite photo of WV (or KY) to see what it truly means. There are other ways to get the coal. My grandfather was a miner, do it the way he did it. A commenter to an MTR blog discussion of the EPA ruling gave me the Almost Leveled line and it just sort of went from there.
Almost leveled, West Virginia
Ancient mountains
Shoved into the river
Lifeless water, stands by fallen trees
Martyr for the power
For grid capacity
Coal company, take my home
From the place I once belonged
West Virginia, mountains gone now
Take my home, from country roads
All my memories, mountain round top
Big coal blasting, strangle flowing water
Dark and dusty, sorrow dims the sky
Acrid bite of nitrate
Teardrops in my eye
Catastrophe, take my home
From the place I once belonged
West Virginia, mountains gone now
Take my home, from country roads
I hear her voice
Grieving for the hills that called me
The Mountains crying as my home fades away
And drivin down the road I get a feelin
I should have voted a different way, yesterday
Coal company, take my home
From the place I once belonged
West Virginia, mountains gone now
Take my home, from country roads
Catastrophe, take my home
From the place I once belonged
West Virginia, mountains gone now
They took my home, from country roads
They took my home, from country roads
Awesome SONG!!!! It truly says what has happened here!!!!
Yes, how very sad. I had thought we fought hard enough against strip mining 30 years ago but it's far worse now. The first thing I'm doing is fighting with my vote. Second, we need to let everyone know how terrible MTR is. How can we ever recover from it?!? Third, is we need to get people to use less electricity. Turn off that computer at night, use CFL bulbs, walk more, eat out less often, there are many things we can do as individuals. Thanks for commenting.
How SAD! I didn't think they could DO that? What kind of protection does a mountain have, anyway? I'm a Blue Ridge girl myself---I would die if they took the mountains away---I think we successfully stopped most development on those mountains near Asheville. What can be done to prevent this kind of stuff?
