"Monty Python's Flying Circus" is the funniest sketch show ever made, IMHO. It was so distinctive that the word "Pythonesque" is now in the dictionary.
The Pythons hold up even by today's standards. It is my understanding that The Life of Brian is headed to Broadway ... I seem to remember the left demanding the "Loretta" scene be cut from the modern performance. #EricIdle gave them a very #Muskesque response.
All of the soldiers were people who were just on the set . They weren’t even actors and they were told if they laughed, they wouldn’t get paid so they were trying really hard not to laugh. That’s what makes this scene 🎬 even funnier.
Not true at all. Chris Langham, Bernard McKenna, Charles McKeown and Andrew MacLachlan were all experienced actors with extensive careers in film and television both before and after Life of Brian. They did have minimal rehearsal time for this scene to keep their reactions fresh whilst Palin did his best to make them laugh. Incidentally I can recommend Langham's series "People Like Us" as being extremely funny.
It first caught me off gaurd but it was good lol. Also good for a movie night type of thing.. of coure most movies are prety good whenever as long as it is not when one feels tired and struggling to stay awale because otherwisevits harder to focus but yeah whom knows where a good program or movie will take ya yknow?
The scene plays funny on its own, but the story behind “Naughtius Maximus” doesn’t make sense without context. At the beginning of the movie Brian’s mother tells him that his father was a Roman soldier by that name, so the joke here is that the name is a well-known fake that the soldiers evidently gave to the Jewish girls they wanted to screw.

"He has a wife you know...you want to know what she's called", soldiers shaking heads "no, no, please no!".
