Love this clip. This was the time when there were still 3 generations of the bikes produced: airheads, kbike brick and the new oil head to be the new way. Great documentary.

I have owned 9 R bikes, and 2 K75s beauties.... My favorite was the R80G/S I bought new back in the day. That is the best bike ever built, in my humble view. I currently have an R1150RS, also, an incredible bike, that is absolutely visually, a stunningly beautiful bike, like the R100RS was in its day, too! These bikes are so amazing! They handle like a dream, have great brakes, and they run forever! The new Beemers, with all the gadgetry, are less reliable, and according to those who I know that own them, spend as much time in the shop getting fixed (electronics issues) than on the road being enjoyed. This is ironic, because I started riding BMW motorcycles for their reputation for reliability.... New is not better. I'll stick with the Airheads and Oilheads, as these models carry the legendary aura that this brand was always known for, for 75 years, until BMW felt the pressure to "modernize" their image. Well, it worked, they are modern, and completely disposable, like everything else these days, even people. And the "global-ists" wouldn't have it any other way.... Thanks for the video. I am retired from LADWP, so it was great reliving the roads of my youth, now that I have moved away after retiring....

I had a series of Hondas (XL350, XR250, CBX400, CBX550F2) then at age 24 was intrigued by a used R80RT. Owned it less then a year before upgrading to an ex-police K100RT in early 1988. I had a long test ride on the first demo R1100RS in 1993, took it back, and said "When there's an RT my name is on the first one". (Yeah, not the way to get a below MSRP price lol). Sure enough, I got one from the first five in NZ, registered to me on 1 October 1995. I'm still using it today, October 2023, 28 years later.

Just picked up a 1988 R1100RS for $2,200 in Nelson.

@@humandroid53 Nice, but the 1100s weren't released until five years after that. Maybe it's an R100? Or a 1998? Or ...?

This, the GS Adventure, the K RS, and the R RT bikes are my FAV of BMW’s 90s bikes.

My favorite one amongst my bikes, so efficient ! just a weak point ; capricious ABS

I disabled the ABS on both my GS and K100RS/4 because I don't trust it. I had a potentially lethal experience with it on the K (front brake frozen on a descent in the Pyrenees).

I've never had any problem with the ABS on my '95 R1100RT (owned from new until today), other than the usual thing of it failing self-test if the battery is a bit low on a cold start. Riding a km or two and then turning the bike off and doing a warm start at a convenient traffic light (etc) resolves that. Or if you have electricity handy, keep it on a battery tender (trickle charger) when you'e not using it and that never happens.
