What a lot of people miss is that Hamlet is actually trying to save Ophelia by telling her to leave.

He's also calling her a whore. "Nunnery" was Elizabethan slang for brothel. But he does love her.

Hes trying to make it easier for her to forget about him in a positive light. He pretends that "wise men know what monsters you make of them" to gaslight her a little into thinking he blames her & that she is at fault, but his entire 'get thee to a nunnery' is bc he thinks they cannot have a happy marriage & normal life & family after he kills the king, but also does not want to see her courted by another man.
He also doesnt want her to lament his absence more than she will, so he doesnt say he loves her in the present, & he doesnt want her to contrive ways for them to both run away together.

@@1nfamyX Sorry but I think this is a reach. Regardless of Hamlet, Shakespeare, or Branagh’s supposed “greater intentions”, the result is still a man abusing a woman - as usual. As if Shakespeare/Hamlet’s words weren’t violent enough, Branagh decided to take Olivier’s shoving of Ophelia even farther, and I am disgusted by that. Please also note how the physical abuse begins after Hamlet is enraged by the discovery Ophelia has arranged for him to be eavesdropped on. Hamlet is unhinged throughout the duration of the entire play!

There’s some evidence that him being in his thirties is basically a transcription error. It wouldn’t make sense for a thirty year old prince to be at university when this was written. Plus if he was 30, the popular son of the dead king probably would’ve been made king as opposed to the brother of the king.

I'm surprised more actors don't portray him as being conflicted in this scene; between his 'madness' and his genuine love for Ophelia. I'd love to see that. Stuck between the life he wants and what he needs to do. So yeah, the version of the play in my head has him loving Ophelia.

@@TheChubbiesrCupcake he appears to care for Horatio but I know what you mean. The 'oh that this all too solid flesh would melt' soliloquy sets that up what you're saying pretty well. So I'm not disagreeing with you on a textual front - I just think it would be an interesting twist to the scene, complemented by some choice edits earlier in the play.
Then you're sorta getting into 'when does editing" become an act of creation in itself, but yeah- i just think it would be neat.
