I'm a 16 year old, hardly any people my age who I've asked have heard Beautiful South, I grew up listening to them every summer and still continue to listen. Those two are outstanding people.
I'm 17 years old and thankfully was not an ignorant child to have my parents play this and much more music to enjoy. Not all kids are oblivious to decent music :P
You are so right ... they would never be mentioned as one of the all-time greats but look at their catalogue ... hit after hit after hit ....Heaton is right up there with the very best I reckon
I can't understand why this band isn't more famous than they are? They are fabulous in every possible way and still most people don't know who they are!
This song gets a perfect 10 from me. I remember when this song came out back in 1998. and most of The Beautiful South songs from the mid-late 90's under the Jacqui Abbott era. Paul and Jacqui sound nearly the same today.
I heard this song at a party last night for the first time since I was a tot, I was 2 when it came out and my uncle and his then-wife would play it non-stop, it was one of my favourites as a kid and I'm so glad I found it again omg
Such incredible wit! A perfect ten out of ten for the Beautiful South. Little or large, size really shouldn't matter, but it really, really does - that's the nature of the beast. They know the score. Time takes its toll, but not on the eyes....
oh god! first I knew the song "mermaids and slaves", then started to look for other Paul Heaton songs on youtube, I never realised this song is his, I heard it so long ago! Simply beautiful! . Britain, thank you for wonderful music :-)
It is fascinating knowing that there are people so far away who love Beautiful south/Paul Heaton. Seems almost surreal that my mum used to drink with the band in the same pub like it was nothing. As a side note i met a very attractive Polish girl working in France =)
this song is very moving i think! we need to remember that beauty fades away but what's left is the feeling inside... it doesn't really matter what u look like, not everyone have to be thin...
Poland, I've been living in London for one year. And I'm really sad that many British bands are underrated in their mother country, while being popular and appreciated by rest of Europe for years.
Alternative radio in Canada got shitty a few years before this song... Never heard it before. I guess there was no room for this when you had to play Nirvana hourly for 10 years in a row. Great song, this.
LOVE this song! Advocates the importance of women of all sizes. First heard it when I bought the c.d. 'Quench' years ago on which this song and another fav of mine 'The Table' feature. Two excellent musical artists collaborating together as'The Beautiful South'. Primo.
Took a mad notion for the BS again after listening to The Housemartins, haven't given them a listen in years, loving them as much as ever, wish they'd come back!
I never realised it when the song first came out all those years ago, but when you listen to it now and read the lyric's, there are quite a few naughty references in there!
No, she does say "gate" because that has to rhyme with "eight". It makes sense because she also says "When he's at my door..." so there are quite a few subtle metaphors for entrances to a house or, as I say, the entrance to her cervix.

@ 0:26- very cute. I bought this (my very first B.S.) album upon first hearing this song. There was no Buzzcocks to it in my case. The Beautiful South on top of their game. Period.

One of the best bands EVER....Paul Heaton rocks at songwriting
You are so right ... they would never be mentioned as one of the all-time greats but look at their catalogue ... hit after hit after hit ....Heaton is right up there with the very best I reckon

"I bought a watch to time your beauty
But I had to fit a second hand"
Probably the best line in music history, and the best song too!
Smart, sassy, classy, intelligent and educational! I miss The Beautiful South so much.!
I heard this song at a party last night for the first time since I was a tot, I was 2 when it came out and my uncle and his then-wife would play it non-stop, it was one of my favourites as a kid and I'm so glad I found it again omg

I can't tell you how much I have tried to find this song! Love it!
I've heard this in Dublin pub one day, and just had to find it. Brilliant. Just brilliant.
I used to listen to this song a lot when I was younger, but didn't quite understand the lyrics. Now that I do, I love it a thousand times more !!!
It is fascinating knowing that there are people so far away who love Beautiful south/Paul Heaton. Seems almost surreal that my mum used to drink with the band in the same pub like it was nothing. As a side note i met a very attractive Polish girl working in France =)
This song is just great :), I'm not much of a singer but I'd absolutely love to sing this as a duet at a karaoke.
arguably Beautiful South's greatest song - so tongue-in-cheek!
Paul you are an inspiration
I love a drink and a song
Thanks
Pat.
Good music lives on - the Clasicizing process. There will always be rubbish but his is pure gold and will live for centuries.

One of the best choruses ever written.
I love this and all their other tunes, always valid points in their lyrics, very clever -epsecially Sail This Ship Alone.. x
Does anyone else think Heaton's acting and comic timing in this video is simply exceptional? Those little eyebrow raises are Hancock at his best.

Totally agree, real 90´s music, for sure
