Came here to learn about bodging something together in my garage, leaving humbled by the mastery of an artisan. Thank you for sharing your gifts with the TH-cam community.
Looks like you had way to much fun making and playing with this kayak. Awesome work. I have watched so many of you videos and you are a true artisan. TY for sharing you love and passion with us.
One more voice asking you to please make this or another sof available as a kit or plans. Such a beautiful boat and so many of us would love to build and own one.

What a joy to watch you work. I’ve still got a set of plans for an expedition single I haven’t yet built, but hope to this year now that I’m retired. I’ve always admired your work.
Encore BRAVO.... Happy new year Nick.
Tengo 2 meses pensando en fabricar uno .... Ahora con tu vídeo será más fácil. Gracias por compartir tu diseño. One question, what kind of paints can we use to seal the kayak ???
I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I am using a good quality exterior latex house paint to seal the fabric. This is probably not the best solution, but it is an easy and affordable selection.
Hi sir.. how r u.. thx for sharings at all.. i need to learn what thickness fiberglass fabric u use and what type of metarial u use to paint it by rulo on the video? Regards
Wonder how much one of these cost. I have no idea about kayaking or canoeing but I would love to have on just for display. These are beautiful examples of extraordinary craftsmanship
Dear Nick Schade, thank you for this beautiful video. I have just finished building my first cedar-strip canoe using your book (building strip-planked boats) and Ted Moore's Canoecraft. Now I'm interested in building a skin-on-frame kayak. Did you also write a book on skin-on-frame kayaks? Or other recources? Thanks ,and have a merry Christmas. Warm greetings from Belgium.
I have not written a book about skin on frame kayaks. I have a design that I need to write a manual for, but I have not done it yet. There are a bunch of good books on SOF. English language authors include Robert Morris, Mark Starr, Chris Cunningham, Wolfgang Brink and others.
Dear Nick Schade, one more question on the skin-on-frame design: how do you find it performs compared to the cedar strip version? I suppose it is a bit slower due to its higher friction drag and lower stiffness? Or do you not notice the difference? Thanks for your feedback (I'm in doubt between building a SOF or Strip built kayak, that's why ;-) )
The weight came out at 36 pounds. Which is only a bit lighter than an equivalent stripper, however, I used a relatively heavy cloth which absorbed a lot of paint.
Beautiful Modern Material skin on frame Kayak, now lets go straight old school. The same boat built with Seal skin, Whale bone and Belin, that would be truly awesome indeed. ~_^

I know this is an old video but have you made the plans available for sale I am looking to do a project with my daughter and she is not up for a full on strip build this might get her excited. Thanks for all of the videos!!!
I am not ready to release the plans as there are a few changes I want to make based on this prototype. I want to do a bit more testing before I finalize the design.
I have not yet finished the plans for this design. This video shows making the prototype. I have made some changes since. It is one of my next projects to build another, document it and write instructions. Keep watching. I will announce when I have the plans ready. Thank you.
I know you did a class recently for people that wanted to build this boat. I am extremely curious how that went, and where you are going next with this. An update here, or on your blog, would be very much appreciated. Thanks!
Hi Leo, unfortunately I had several people drop out late in the registration period and ended up not having enough students to run the class, so it didn't happen.

I've built a stich-n-glue but have always wanted to do a SOF greenland style boat, but not want to deal with an ocean cockpit or steam bending ribs. This looks like the old "Yostwerks" method where you use plywood sections instead.
Yes, this "Fuselage Frame" method of doing skin on frame kayaks has been around since the 1950s. It is pretty easy being just cutting out the frames to shape instead of steaming and bending. I've done the more traditional steamed ribs and coaming method. It is a lot of fun also and gives you that ability to improvise as you go, but the cut frames work well for getting you to the design you had in mind when you started.
I agree. I have just assembled a Yost Sea Flea for my son, I have 2 solid days in, the frame is built, need a coaming and skin. But that is a simple kayak, only four frames, your MBS is the most complicated example of fuselage frame construction I've seen. Beautiful work, and the right tools to make it feasible.
polyester, no fiberglass? See? Nick Schade I'm trying to build a boat that is fast, comfortable and efficient. That can take me through the old Erie Canal to the Hudson. Some trip?! Not sure if is possible ? Ps. Lastly Repairable is a plus.
@@minimalself This skin on frame technique does not use fiberglass. You can make a tough, lightweight boat this way quite easily. It takes a lot less time than most other methods.
@@NickSchade oops, I confused the skin on with strip plank method! I'm working with in a small budget, I have a just received logs today; Of black walnut and some birch wood! "Not long enough, nor dried out" Haven't built or purchase a kayak "Or kit", Was think of a strip plank kayak for a 11 day trip, getting the spline built with Douglas fur., using maple plywood for the hull and maybe a pine species for the Deck? Didn't me for the miscommunication!
The kayak was modeled in MaxSurf, which outputs cross sections where I want the frames. I then edit those cross sections in Vectorworks to add stringer notches and other refinements to create the frames.
This type of SOF construction feels very reminiscent of an old "stick & tissue" model airplane fuselage and seems easier and more familiar than the seemingly more common type with the steam bent ribs. I can't wait for this to become available as I think it is the homemade kayak for me.
Hello Nick. I was wondering if I could use some of your tips? (or what it is called, tips, advice or makings?) in my own kayak, when I am finished designing my own? I like the idea, that you do not have to steam bend your planks, which seems like can take a bit longer. I am all new to designing kayaks and overall just kayaks in general. So I hope I can use your video-instructions (tips, makings or what it is called) in my own kayak at some point :-). Have a nice day.
I put these videos out there so people can see ideas that they might want to use themselves. Feel free to use any ideas you see. If you have specific questions about anything, I'm happy to offer my input.
Thank you very much, that is very kind of you :-). The only problem I have designing it right now, is the depth of the kayak, so it floats properly :-D. I want the kayak to have a high volume (Think that is called that, when you want a bit more lenght between the water and the seating area). Have a nice day :-)
You will need to determine the "displacement". This is the amount of weight you want the kayak to carry. Typically, this is your weight, plus the kayak weight, and anything else you would want to have with you on the kayak. The weight will be how much water is "displaced" when you try to float. You will displace an equal weight of water for however much weight that kayak will carry. To determine the volume of the kayak below the waterline you need to determine the volume of the water that weighs what you want to displace. You then need to design the kayak to have that much volume below the waterline. This requires some calculation, either that is you look at other kayaks that are similar to what you want to design and base your dimensions on those other kayaks. This should get you close.

Do the rigid ribs destroy the flexability that steam bent ribs produce?
