As a gradma, I'm sick of young women saying they 'hate that perfume, it smells like a grandma!'. My grandmother used Yeardly Old English Lavender soap and vanilla extract as fragrance, and although I don't use those things as such, smelling either of them gives me happy memories, and is comforting, to boot. So, y'all don't like the way a perfume smells? Fine, but quit blaming us GRANDMOTHERS!

Agreed but it's not just "grandmothers". Look at all the culture icons who created or wore these fragrances. Vivienne Westwood, Cyndi Lauper and Madonna were not exactly shrinking violets and they aren't/weren't known for their homemade soup and crocheted blankets. So, give me a break, little upstarts.

I don’t own Angel anymore, but when I was much younger I smelled it on someone else and it was what got me hooked on fragrances. It was just so unique back then. From there I started collecting perfume as a teenager. So Angel will always have a place in my heart!

I love this one on my skin because super sweet scents smell best on me (they don't smell too sweet on me). I can't do florals because they end up smelling very soapy (like a weird version of Irish Spring).

After getting covid, losing my smell, and developing parosmia that took over a year to get better...my smell has permanently changed. Perfumes I loved now smell chemical. I adored Flower Bomb. I wore Chanel #5 only for 25 years. It's beautiful! It's also not as good as it used to be after 2012 IFRA restrictions. The aldehydes are just the fun bracing part of the opening, and then it dries down to a beautiful composition. I get so irritated by the hate it gets.

So I'll keep saying it Coco Chanel hated the way # 5 smelled so much she sold the formula to a Canadian Company hoping she would never have to smell it again. It was also an experiment in trying to make a cheaper version of perfume by using chemicals instead of natural products. So it was one of the first 'fake fragrances. This is history ladies, you can research & read all about it. Back in the day it was considered an inexpensive drug store fragrance. I don't even like calling it perfume.

I accidentally discovered something similar to Chanel No. 5, and I find it more alluring and complex:
Swiss Arabian > Rasheeqa (perfumed oil)
And when I smell it, I feel like a queen. And I do not understand the "grandma" characteristics. Yes, some perfumes are better for mature women, so what?

I purchased a bottle of Dior Dune after smelling it directly from the bottle at a friend's house and loving it. The first day I wore it I had a weird feeling of nausea. The following day, I casually smelled the blouse I was wearing and immediately got the same effect, so I realized it was Dune that gave me nausea, not the fragrance itself, but the combination of my personal smell and chemistry with the perfume, and seriously, it was repulsive. Not all fragrances are for everybody and a scent that blends greatly with one person can be awful on another, which I've also found true for Chanel 5. I gave away Dune for good and now before purchasing any fragrance I get a sample and wear it for several hours to see how it blends and evolves on me.

I’m recently gifted a bottle of BR540 and I love it so much, but it’s not as “beast mode” as I imagined it would be as everyone’s saying how potent it is. So I googled and found that a lot of people are complaining that the 2022 bottles are much weaker, wonder if anyone knows anything about it being watered down/ reformulated?
I agree that chanel no 5 is like a fine wine, remember spritzing it at the airport duty free, thinking it’s just ok at first, and later on found myself sniffing my wrist the whole flight. To me, it’s for a lady with class and experience, hope I’d one day be able to wear such a beautiful scent!

Exactly! I bought BR540 at official importer store in Prague and it's beautiful fragrance, but soooo unexpectedly weak :( I think that Kurkdjian want to sell newer, concentrated version BR Extrait much more, so they made the original one weaker. I'm very disappointed.

To be honest I'm a huge fan of sweet smells like Angel from Mugler. I have limited Eau de Sucree version and to some people it's overly sweet so I can understand them but still it suits me well. One fragrance is like a dress and on different types of bodies it will open differently. I work with a lot of people and sometimes if one will come with intense smell of DKNY Be delicious (as example because I can identify it very well) and it will smell good on them then another person with that fragrance will smell too much and I will cover my nose.

Such a mixed bag. I personaly love Angel because I connect a lot of memories with it.
A lot of strong women I grew up around wore it, my mom sometimes aswell. Say what you want, but the "Mugler Woman" is sort of an identity.
The intense sweetness made me like it as a kid of course and that its intense, but not in that bitter-spicy herbal way like a lot of heavier perfumes for "mature" women.
On the other hand I 100% agree with Chanel - So many girls in their early 20s wear this around me and I was always like "What is this soapy 0% flirty at all working at the office scent?" when I found out its Chanel No.5 I was suprised.
Its all super subjective of course, but to me it just has that almost bland "Why even bother putting it on" smell.
With men's perfumes I just dislike anything sporty, oceany and after-shavey. So many common men's perfumes have this cheap sport shower gel smell. Reminds me too much of Locker Rooms and Highschool.
    But *most importantly*
I appreciate people wearing a perfume AT ALL, cuz even with popular fragrances you dont smell them that often.
Like, if I dont enjoy one thing - Its the 80% of people who just dont wear a perfume in general and only have that "worn out clothing" scent to them, kinda rainy/musky. I like people who wear a perfume, even if its not to my taste, for at least making a choice and caring about the way they smell. A scent is like another dimension to show personality.

No no. Chanel No.5 is our GREAT grandmothers fragrance. It was created in May, 1921. It's literally turning 102 in another month.

Parfum will always be a reason for different opinions-or somtimes heated discussions....For example many do not like LVEB ...me personally I hate hate the tom ford parfums....and baccarat rouge doesnt smell special to me eigther😂Never in 100years had i think that baccarat is so hyped when i wouldn't know it better.
I am German ,here everybody loves J'adore Dior👍🏻♥️.And also Issey M. has absolut cool parfums.
True N°5 is one of the very best.
Gives me always nostalgic feelings❤LOVE IT

Lol my mom LOVES La Vie Est Belle specifically because it's not original! It smells near identical to a fragrance she purchased while on honeymoon with my dad in Paris. That fragrance has been discontinued, and LVEB and one other La Perla scent are the only close dupes we have found.

Carolina Herrera smells like bug spray on my skin. I have tried many times. People say it is sweet, but I get sharp and sour. What am I missing?

I own every single la vie est belle! It is beautiful! Smells floral pretty, with a very touch of sweat vanilla, the soleil Cristal is stunning! Also replica coffee break is one of my personal favorite perfumes. But as for channel no5. I have never went without it in 30 years, the hands down most classic fragrance.

I have two bottles of Angel from Thierry Mugler instead of MUGLER. When head notes evaporate, it is very comforting, dry, vanilla scent with a hint of powdery accords. I love it.
I have recognised Baccarat Rouge 540 on one woman. She smelled like cotton candy shop. It's nice, loud, but I don't know if I would want to smell like that.

I am weird with fragrance. I only buy fragrances from Guerlain and Fragonard and don’t stray from my favorites: summer -Fleur d’ Oranger Fragonard.
    Autumn: Santal-Fragonard
    Winter-L’Instant -Guerlain
    Spring-la Petit Robe Noir-Guerlain.
As a grandmother, I have to laugh at the comments regarding No. 5. I think it’s a lovely scent but it doesn’t smell terrific with my body chemistry.
