Regardless of the rumors about his alcoholism Broderick Crawford was a great actor, he played his part well as a smart, fast talking cop that's always out thinking the criminal and no matter how you look at it, I can't see no other person playing the role of Dan Mathews other that Broderick Crawford.

They goofed on the car switch scene as two Jaguars were used. The first was darker colored than the other one and had rear fender skirts and the other one didn't (but both had the same driver) I remember one in my neighborhood as a kid. A college guy drove it for about a year but then went into the Army, spent a year in Vietnam but when he came back he didn't want the car anymore. He decided to get married instead (no thanks!)
Joe Flynn always looked older than he really was. He was just 31 here and just 37 when he was cast as the old crusty captain in McHale's Navy.

I'm not sure how it works now, because we see product names all over tv shows now, but it used to be copyright infringement to mention or show product names. Even things like watch brands. I've seen a few episodes of this show where a few of them are noting exact times and "synchronizing watches", then they'll show the dial of one or more of them and there's an obvious white-out marking over the brand name. Every now and then, you'll catch a car name or emblem though. When I was a kid, i asked my Dad why the names weren't on some items. Like on a Pepsi can... it was spot on. It was obviously Pepsi, but the name was very conspicuously missing. I think anymore that companies are just happy for the free publicity and advertising, and most likely even pay for product placement. But I'm not in advertising or tv shows or anything even vaguely related' so don't quote me.

I think what the problem was, the car companies would have to pay for the advertising. That's why they didn't mention the car names. Thing was they (car company) probably figured just the cars being on the show was free advertising.

This series began in the early 1950s, when I was an infant, toddler, and then kindergartener, etc. I remember hearing the opening announcement about the “militia,” etc., but I did not yet have the faculties to watch and enjoy the show-not until now! And now, I am appreciating them very much. The dialogue is a bit stiff and stayed by today’s standards, but the character of Dan Mathews played by Broderick Crawford is terrific. He is, of course, the same rapid-fire man who played the incomparable Willie Stark in the 1949 classic film version of Robert Penn Warren’s ‘All The King’s Men.”

Broderick Crawford was an excellent movie actor. When he made these TV episodes he was pretty ill from alcoholism. Those WERE the "GOOD OLD DAYS" for sure! I remember being able to drive a motorcycle with JUST a regular DL. Was NO need for special endorsements, fees or concern about engine displacement. Today, you don't need a DL or cycle endorsement to ride a 50cc moped because EVERYONE KNOWS you will not die on a machine that tops out at 35MPH, but if you ride an 80cc bike WITHOUT a cycle endorsement (or at least a cycle permit) you MIGHT GO TO JAIL because that bike will go 45MPH, a death machine! US 34 is here in South Carolina. I wonder if it goes that far West. US 34 runs East & West here. Remember this was before the Interstate Highways were finished. I remember them working on I-81 in Pennsylvania. We used US highways. Alot more of a chance to see the USA (in your Cheverolet) than what you can see from the Interstates. Then add the DVD's and Game players in the back seat and everyone misses the scenery, but they get to watch the same move over again for the 100th time, wow! My kid was taught how to travel, and today, she acts as if she's too good to go and do the way she was raised. Her Daddy and me were Working class, good moral,Hippies, who are also Republican and broke. Not all Republicans are rich and not all Hippies are Liberal, commie loving Democrats. Rumors? Hah.. He was an alcoholic for sure and gave the series problems. Crawford's drinking increased during the filming of Highway Patrol, eventually resulting in several arrests and stops for driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI), which eventually gained him a suspended driving license.[5] Eventually the drinking strained the show's relationship with the CHP as well as Crawford's relationship with ZIV.
Fellow actor Stuart Whitman became a close friend of Crawford. In an interview Whitman said they both clicked upon meeting when cast in an episode of Highway Patrol. According to Whitman, who was going through hard financial times, they became fast friends. Crawford would ask Whitman to play his character whenever he was low on cash, so that Whitman would do the dialogue while he was drinking. Whitman said that later down the line he helped to cast Crawford in The Decks Ran Red (1958). Whitman promised the production that Crawford would stay sober throughout the shoot, and he did

Blooper : In the first shot of the Jag, it's got a wheel skirt on it. At second shot, its gone ! Just looked again and the first Jag (with the skirt) is red. The second is white. Compare it against the cab and see !!! It's a totally different car. The first has the side vent open, the second closed.

    Trivia
TOM PITTMAN Died in a car crash after leaving a Halloween party at the home of Norma Stuart, ex-wife of Keefe Brasselle. His body was found in his wrecked sports car by a Los Angeles police officer nearly three weeks later, on November 19, at the bottom of the ravine in Benedict Canyon. He was nearly halfway out of the driver's side window, having been crushed between the steering post and the driver's side door. According to his father, he idolized James Dean and like Dean, loved to drive his sports car at high speeds. He was driving a Porsche Spyder when he was killed, the same model in which Dean died.

In later years at a car show, one owner told me they only get 12 miles to the gallon as that big 6 drinks a lot of gas. Joe Flynn always looked at least 10 years older than he was. Final answer: this is an XK-140 for the following reasons: Chrome bar on bonnet (hood) and trunk @ 5:18 and 6:24 . One piece (2 pieces on the 120) front bumper with 2 bumperets, 7 vertical bars front grill exclusive to the XK-140, fog lights for the USA market all seen from 9:52 to 10:02 . Cannot be an XK-150 as it does not have a one-piece windshield and XK-150 started in 1957, this episode was filmed in 1956 as confirmed with the Copyright at end of episode shown in roman numbers MCMLVI.
