The safest job on Highway Patrol was that of the narrator: Art Gilmore lived to the ripe old age of 98 (1912 - 2010).

It is well documented that Broderick Crawford was more and more drunk as the series progressed. If you mean "down the list" they are listed in reverse order of broadcast, the earlier episodes are at the bottom. The earlier the better IMHO.

*Of the guest actors, the only one who had any sort of long-lasting acting career was Mary-Robin Redd (newlywed wife) who went on to appear in such shows as "Mannix", "Barnaby Jones", "That Girl", "M*A*S*H", and quite a few others. Even so, her acting career ceased 30 years ago. As for the newlywed husband "Carl Stone", Highway Patrol was his first and only credit, his career ending for good in the same decade it began - the 1950's.*

"I don't know what we'd do without the lab boys. From a couple of footprints they give us everything we want to know, except the color of their eyes, skin & hair."
Hmmm..... I don't know about that. Color of eyes & hair may be unknown, but skin? In all of the many episodes I've watched so far I have yet to see anyone whose skin was not white.

This is from an article in 1986
      pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3944558/
How often was it used by law enforcement in 1950's
      Abstract
In the mid 1800s, Topinard proposed a simple formula for estimating a person's height: maximum foot length divided by 0.15 reveals the stature of most individuals. In addition to corroborating Topinard's findings, the author has developed formulas to serve as predictive models for estimating both height and weight when only a subject's footprint dimensions are known. The formulas are presented with a discussion of the data from which they are derived.

Fingerprints on the doorknob? There must be a thousand fingerprints on that doorknob! Also, Matthews takes chances capturing criminals. Putting them in the front seat without backup. Those cars were not equipped with guards or anything like today's police cars. And the capture of the criminals is too easy! Most criminals of today would have easily overpowered Matthews and killed him.
