  • O Christ What Burdens Bowed Thy Head, is a Hymn by Anne R. Cousin, and the music is our rendition from Wyeth’s Second Repository.
    Here are the hymn lyrics or hymn words below. This hymn has a somewhat melancholy tune but there's a real beauty to it. I hope this simple acoustic hymn is a blessing.
    O Christ, what burdens bowed Thy head!
    Our load was laid on Thee;
    Thou stoodest in the sinner’s stead,
    Didst bear all ill for me;
    A Victim led, Thy blood was shed,
    Now there’s no load for me.
    The curse of death was in our cup:
    The cup was full for Thee;
    But Thou hast drained the last dark drop,
    And emptied it for me.
    That bitter cup, love drank it up;
    There is no curse for me.
    Jehovah raised the rod to smite;
    The blow returned on Thee;
    Upon Thy form did it alight,
    And passed away from me;
    Thy soul so white did wrath affright,
    There is no wrath for me.
    The tempest’s awful voice was heard,
    Its thunders broke on Thee!
    Thy open bosom was my ward,
    And it protected me;
    Thy body scarred, Thy visage marred,
    There is no storm for me.
    For us, Lord Jesus, Thou hast died,
    That we might die in Thee;
    But Thou art raised and glorified,
    And livest now in me;
    Hell’s host defied! heav’n open wide!
    There is no death for me.

    Amen, thank you Jesus for taking death upon yourself ,death on the cross to take the penalty of my sin and the power of sin . May I take this seriously to deny myself putting sin to death pick up my cross and follow Jesus example.

    Oh my goodness! My daily reading today was Mark 14:32-34 where Jesus says he is sorrowful, even to death. I couldn't have asked for a more fitting, mournful song to help me absorb the meaning and feeling of that dark evening in Gethsemane! 💔
    Thank you. You two have a gift, and the Body is blessed that you share it. 💞

      Thankyou Dawn, it's always incredible when the Lord seems to sync up what we're reading and what we might hear in a sermon or a song. It's so encouraging for us to hear how the Lord is using these hymns to speak to the saints! Bless You!

    I've searched this hymn on line and this does not appear to be the tune that Ira Sankey wrote, which is in a major key. I like this melody much more than Sankey's. Is this a borrowed folk tune? Just curious regarding the origin of this tune.

      Yes, you're right, it looks like we made a mistake, I think this is where the tune comes from - "Wyeth’s Second Repository" I've changed the video description accordingly. Thanks so much! - Hadyn
