  • from the Japanese album Sea Change (2002)
    when I called you in the morning
    you were struggling for sense
    you were journeying through memories so vicious
    you made all your dying wishes come true
    but I know you're gonna try
    to live without love by and by
    but that's not living
    that's just time going by
    going by, my love
    another ship in the bottle
    who's got no place to sail
    see the waves getting darker every hour
    the stars have lost their power in the sky
    but I know you're gonna try
    to live without love by and by
    but that's not living
    that's just time going by
    going by, my love

    This is the final track on the Mobile Fidelity vinyl version of Seachange, and it is truly a fitting final conclusion to the album. I always thought the autotuned scrambling of Beck's vocals in the final 30 seconds symbolised him rising above the heartache; as sort of positive end to this dark period of his life.

    It's really bizarre that the best track in the album actually is the bonus track. Beck is full of surprise.

    I have a weird relationship with this not being on the album, on one hand, it's a beautiful, passionate song, with great lyrics and production, and I feel like it would have to end the album. However, Side of the Road is a completely stripped-back, intimate song, whilst the rest of the album has a lot of scope and sounds, Side of The Road takes all that away, showing us how personal Sea Change really is, and is a perfect ending to the album.
    I dunno, I guess this could replace Sunday Sun, it would kinda fit with the album a lot better.

    so tired of hearing this song is too "poppy" and "upbeat" -- this is a dark song with poppy, bright melodies, but is very much at home on Sea Change nonetheless.
    it's a great tune, and deservedly has a place on this record.

    • @excrono
      @excrono ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t understand that interpretation, it’s a deep, sobering song after a person has experienced a sea change in their life, where they have come to terms and move on after much pain and suffering.

    Musically it's pretty "Revolver" Era Beatles-esque. Still, fear of revealing influences is a shoddy reason to keep this beauty from being released.

    • @TheLarryburns84
      @TheLarryburns84 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that's one reason I like Nirvana so much- they openly stated their influences, usually pretty obscure groups, and encouraged people to go check em out

    • @excrono

      Yes, this track as the closer feels like a Beatles ending, like “A Day in the Life”, a monster encore after the ending that sums up its themes.

  • @MattMonks123

    Whatta find. Real good. Wikipedia says he left it off cause it was too poppy. Doesn't make sense. Lost Cause is real upbeat too. This is better than some of the weepier slowburners deep on the second side of the album.

  • @k-leb4671

    The beginning of this song sounds pretty meh, but it gets better and better as it goes. I love the last 30-ish seconds with the scrambled vocals and ethereal synths.

    It makes sense why this isn't included on Sea Change as we know it, at least this version anyway. Its a bit too bright and melodic...

  • @mynameisfuzzy1
    @mynameisfuzzy1 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Sea Change is my favorite album of all time, so before I say this know that I love this album with all of my heart and soul. I don't really like this song as much as the other songs on the album. I would agree with Beck that it is a bit poppy and might mess up the flow of the album a little bit. Not to say I don't like the song, because this song is GREAT, I just would take songs like The Golden Age and Guess I'm Doing Fine over it. Just my 2 cents.

  • @Bram25
    @Bram25 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The most depressing Beck album. But also one of the best in his newer kind of music.
    (The newer albums are terrible in my opinion. Either Beck should be surreal or totally dark. )

    @oogaboogan Wrong, Rexicano is right. Sea change IS pop music whether you like to admit it or not (Pop = top 40, and the fact that sea change charted way up in the top 40's means by definition ITS POP MUSIC).

    Should have been on the US release. I don't get what's up with artists added songs on Japanese releases and not anywhere else. A lot of artists do that. Not to be rude, but what makes Japan so special that get "their own" songs? Is there an actual real reason for this or just record company tactic to sell more albums? I understand American and European artists are hugely popular over there, but still. It's almost like they're are saying that certain fans are more important that others.

    • @TheLarryburns84

      CDs are expensive in Japan, so they usually give them extra stuff as a bit of compromise for their music being so pricey.
