    Some great recommendations. I will add some of them to my TBR for sure. Also will need to check out more booktubers. I was in a really bad reading slump a few years ago and what worked for me: graphic novels. The visual aspect helped me keep my attention on the book, and I could get through them in no time. In my case, it was The Sandman by Neil Gaiman. But other graphic novels would work too. Many popular novels have also been turned into graphic novels, which might be a good way to revisit an old favorite.

    A couple of books that pulled me out of a reading slump are Margaret Rogerson's An Enchantment of Ravens and Sorcery of Thorns. Both great standalones romance fantasy, first more mystical, cozy autumn fairy vibes and second magical librarian demon hunters. I have been on reading slumps multiple times. The current one was when my dad dies in 2021. I lost my appetite in reading and the one book that got me out of the slump was The Home of Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs. It is a YA Fantasy book, not too thick and not too thin, and it has an easy-to-understand stupendous writing style both for young and adult bookworms. This is my go-to book, I have re-read it twice and have a plan to re-read it again.

    My very first thought was it's gotta be Brandon Sanderson. Great recs otherwise but I'm glad you agree!
    One recommendation I'd give is to switch up the format and listen to an audiobook! I've been blowing through books again, even sneaking a few non-fiction books in between my normal diet of fantasy/sci-fi books. At first I resisted doing this, but sometimes the reader(s) really add something unique and special to a story, e.g. in The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie, the reader's voice for Inquisitor Glokta is phenomenal. I've also listened to a dramatic recording of Neil Gaiman's The Sandman, which was a really cool way to experience the story.

    More realistically I think a book to break you out of your slump just needs to be easy to read. The pacing, flow, etc. is what matters more. It could be a simple book with no real depth or insight at all. Could be pure action with no large overall plot.
    It doesn't really matter what the book is, just has to be something you'll keep reading while in the slump. Some of these choices just don't seem like slump breakers. If I was in a slump and read some of these descriptions I'd just add the book to a list and forget about it.
    Some of these are great though. Like they said though, everyone's slump breakers will be different. For instance with the Dresden files it wouldn't matter much if you read the books out of order. Some parts would be confusing and you'd lack background information on certain characters... but each story has a beginning and end. The main focus is still the main character though there's a ton of side characters. There's a lot of books in the series but it's not intimidating like The Wheel of Time. The books aren't that long and each one is a full story.

    • @FunFantasyBooks
      @FunFantasyBooks  ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely! Each of us might need something different to get out of a slump! Personally for me I need to care about the characters and if there’s some humor and great magic all the better, but also needs to be pretty light!
      Thank you for supporting the Dresden Files (Mike’s pick!) hopefully this will help others to pick Dresden up!

  • @jelestra

    I mostly read series. I do a lot of re-reads in between new series, to kind of help my mind settle before moving on to the next new series.
    One of my favorite re-reads is - the Raine Benares series, by Lisa Shearin. The writing just flows across the page and takes me along for the ride. Just an all around enjoyable read for me. An Elf girl tries to help a friend, accidentally gets bonded to a cursed rock, and everything goes to hell.
    Jennifer Estep has several series I really enjoy. The fact they're in the same universe just adds to it, I think. Bigtime, Elemental Assassin, Black Blade. I really like her writing style, and the characters are fun and interesting.
    Ghost Girl / The Crane Diaries, by Apryl Baker. Foster kid sees ghosts. When she sees her foster sister's ghost, she finally stops ignoring her gift, and uncovers a serial killer. Later discovers she was kidnapped from one of the Main Magical Families, The Cranes, is reunited with her father, and her adventures continue. I've only read through these twice now, but I get sucked in every time. (This author also has other series set in the same universe, and some of those characters make an appearance.)
    Pretty much anything by Ilona Andrew or C.J. Archer are also fun re-reads that help me get past that slump.
    The Beginner's Guide to Necromancy, or Black Dog (and spin offs), by Hailey Edwards.
    October Daye by Seanan McGuire

    • @jelestra
      @jelestra ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FunFantasyBooks Sorry, it's The Ghost Files, rather than Ghost Girl. And I'm not saying it's the best series ever. There are some flaws. The Crane Diaries are much better written, but are a continuation of the first series. The main point, for me, is that it is an interesting story, and one you don't have to think about too deeply - because I tend to get burn out after I've read a book or series that is all engrossing or intense, so can't settle into something else quite yet.
      Raine Benares, on the other hand, is well written and engrossing. It's the writing that makes it easy to read and fall into. Just a well balanced and enjoyable read. At least in my opinion.
      Can't recommend Jennifer Estep, or Ilona Andrews enough.
      Again, these are easier reads - For those times your brain doesn't want to cope with something a lot more in depth or intense, but still want a good story.

      @@FunFantasyBooks You're in for a treat. It's one of the funniest most preceptive things You'll ever read. Pratchett's Alzheimer's was exceedingly sad. The good news is before the quality fell off so badly, he wrote a huge amount that ranged from good to brilliant. (Do stop with Unseen Academicals.)
