I've tried all of these and my mirka paired with a dewalt dust extractor is a match made in heaven. 👌🏼 between the mobility, lightweight and just plain quality of the finish.. I can say that it's the best for me 🙌🏼
Been sanding with the porter cable for 20 years. My shoulders are definitely gone. Was kinda pissed when I found out they have discontinued it, but now I'm excited to see the new lighter, and hopefully better options out there.
The hilti or Mirka are the easiest to use but less aggressive.
I can´t wait for those exoskeletons for work to become massive and cheap.

After a day of sanding using the original bad boy porta cable. Neck and shoulder so sore. U difinitly correct on that one.
All what the man says about Mirka is 100% correct. It's just a wonder for finishing fullcoated walls, for any gentle works, but not the tool for seams at all.

Anti static hose grounded to an outlet. They also make anti static wrist bands for working on electronics. But all of these need a source of least resistance. So a path to ground. You could cut a cord and cap the Neutral and hot then use the ground. Just know what you are doing. And maybe always test the ground with a multimeter before using it.
I have a Mirka, I taped a wire around the vacuum hose and put a plug on the end of the wire so I could ground it in to an outlet. Gets rid of the static shocks.

The DeWalt hose adapter that fits on the drywall sander is the DWV9000. Yo can also get this already attached to a 15 foot anti static hose, the model is DWV9316. This connector also attaches to almost all the newer DeWalt miter saws,palm Sanders and you can buy adapters to use them in routers.

I use the mirka and have the fein tool hepa vac. Also I use the mirka 18f static free hose ! Never even once have I been shocked. I use it daily. Hope this helps

I have the Porter cable now, but thinking about getting the Mirka, or the Dewalt since I have all Dewalt cordless tools. Probably go with the Mirka because of ease of use on ceilings, and the orbital action.

DeWalt makes a cordless hepa/silica vacuum that works perfect with that DeWalt. One more thing about that DeWalt is that it has
a wireless connection to their vacuum. When you turn on the DeWalt, it turns on the vacuum automatically.

Cool video, I'm gonna try a different one. I've been using the Porter cable for a long time. It does give you quite a workout on ceilings💪. I do a lot of texture removal.

I use Festool and Mirka a lot on custom jobs, historic jobs, pre 78 jobs, lead based jobs and have never had a problem with static build up. Could be your hose, the Vac you are using or the cord inlet on the tool. The Mirka cord is black where it plugs into the tool so it is hard to see if there is an arc that could be causing shocks. Will be honest and say that on some of my Mirka sanders, the cord is really hard to plug into the tool. On Festools', one can see char marks on the cord so it is easy to see if there is a connection problem. The cord should be plugged into your Vac. Some people plug the tool into an outlet or spider box and use an extension cord to cover more ground. This is a no no as it can cause changes in voltage and or even power surges if other trades are using the same power source. Re the Vac., in fine woodworking and level five finishes, higher suction can actually destroy your project by leaving baby swirl marks. A good HEPA vac will have a suction control. Good hoses made for the vac will also have an air control valve where it plugs into the tool. The sanding tool should also have a speed control level. Air flow and the suck power do not determine the quality of the sanding. Festool made a major mistake when they entered they Painting and Drywall trades. The plastic on their HEPA Vacs' suck, the bags are more expensive than an auto payment , and their customer service in Hawaii and on the Mainland is a joke. Good luck getting the tool covered under a warranty. Mirka has their share of problems as well. Their customer service is second to none. If you have a problem, they will work with you to resolve it. A tool is only as good as the one who is using it. No tool will work right if the engineer who made it never worked in the trade. Sanding drywall sucks, sucks, sucks! There are no short cuts in life. Good luck getting the round sander into the corner. For your readers considering airing out on sanding a popcorn off a pre 78 ceiling without getting it tested for asbestos.................................................................PPE wont't work. The fine starts at 30 k plus.
Thanks for the insight brother 100% agree with you on getting and type of popcorn or paint tested it's not worth the risk or liability. I haven't had any problem with the other sanders with static. I run all of them off the same vac . It's a grounded dewalt hepa vac run it straight to the vacum and off the Mirka anti static hose and for what ever reason when ever the hose comes in contact with my bare skin I get a quick zap on the exposed area all I found that helps is wrapping the hose around my arm once to always have contact. That does the trick , I going to try out a new hose and see if that does the trick. Over all still the best finish sander currently available zaps and all.
@@csdrywallhawaii Keep up the good work. Like you, I buy my own tools and pay a lot of money for them. Money is not the issue when it comes to tools. Performance, run time, and durability is a must. I can hook you up with some people at Mirka that will listen to your problem and hopefully resolve the issue. Again, I am not promoting Mirka but informing you that they will do everything possible to listen to our problems, address them, fix them if possible, and or develop a better tool once they listen to guys who use them. Let me know next time you are doing a Hi Rise job. I am thinking about taking a few of my festools ' and throwing them off the top and filming it. Pehaps they will finally get the message that their customer service sucks locally and on the mainland. I only speak the truth. I was recently informed after taking a festool HEPA in for repair, that my motor casing was cracked..............Again, I replied. Same problem I had on my other 3. Three strikes your out in baseball. The tool is still sitting at wood craft for any of your readers who want it. How come the motor casings never crack in my Mirkas', Feins', and Bosch HEPA vacs? Dewalt is not an option for me regarding HEPA vacs. Your ears will tell you so.
If you ever have a problem with static electricity use SD (static discharge) yellow sticker on safety boots they are used in environments where there is a high risk of explosion they really work

Loving that Mirka sander
I'm familiar with getting static charge shocks from insulation hoses. When you described wrapping the hose around your arm, what you're doing is neutralizing the difference in charge between you and the hose but the charge is still being generated by the hose and will discharge any other way it can. You can ground the entire hose so it can't build up in the first place (what Mirka meant to send you) or just discharge it safely by giving it an easier path to ground than through your body.

I have the festool easy and I am very happy with it, on the beginning I was having trouble to sand level 5 cuz of the swirls marks and with the soft backing pad and the red sand paper not the festool, I use 240 grit and work perfectly,

There is a new festool planex out wich is extendable just like the dewalt. That one now bas a handy light ring surrounding the head and has an excentric sander movement instead of the old orbital version. I have no experience with it, but it might just combine the best of all three tools you mentioned.
It looks pretty cool the difference between Mirka is the head moves 180 degrees which makes ceilings a breeze
I think the hoses on the mirka head are not static resistant. That's where I think it builds up
Hey bud, the dewalt DWV9000 will screw directly onto the cen-tec hose. Just unscrew the centec piece that is on the hose that the adaptors clip onto. There might be some hot glue (I cant remember for sure) TIP its a reverse thread so. I use a mixture of dewalt, festool, and makita and the centec hose works for all 3. However Dewalt tools require me to unscrew the end and install the DWV9000 for the best fit. I will also say Im not a fan of the dewalt connector. Its to bulky for smaller tools. Its probably not an issue with the drywall sander but smaller tools its awkward.

Also a thought on the static, on the Stihl gas powered fogger, there is a metal chain that hangs from the tube and drags on the ground to prevent static build up. Maybe try attaching a metal chain to your vacuum hose that will contact the ground
Ya I am going to purchase a hose with coils inside to see if that helps, next step would be trying a different grounded hepa vac.

Oh, I was hoping Makita was in this one since I've ot Makita tools (no Dewalt) and Milwaukee doesn't have one.
Ive been using the festool planex granat net abrasive, the mesh one. I use 180 sometimes 220 with the mirka sander. Best combo since peanut butter and jelly. Imo mirka best sander around. Waiting on the festool planex 2 , looyk like a festool and mirka mix

Potter cable is the best for big houses
Got my Mirka at PPG. I’m using the sleeve and not any shocking. Never used without the sleeve, can’t say anything about shocking. The only complaint I have is the hose attachment. Festool much easier. Still can’t figure it out if I need to rotate the that thing on the sander or push the hose on top of that. That round port rotates very hard. I pared the sander with my app on my phone but still can’t register it. I wish they would come out with a holder on top of the vacuum the way the festool has. I purchased the original planex first just for how compact it is but it’s not easy on ceilings. Now the planex is for hallways, closets and bathrooms.
Ya I feel you bud. I seen the newer feestool head is the same as the easy sand so won't be as easy for ceilings like the Mirka. So you have two of the best sanders available. Great combo thanks for watching.

Great information, thanks! I've experienced shocking with other oscillating type sanders connected to vacs. One solution is using a grounded hose. I've used one with copper wire wound in the ridges. But it needs to be connected to the pole and the vac with connectors. I saw that cen-tec sells a antistatic hose for shock prevention. It doesn't use a wire conductor, it uses conductive hose, might be worth trying.
Thanks for the suggestion I think Iam going to have to go that route if the hose I just got doesn't work. Then see in a can Brower a different vac. The one I own is the dewalt hepa which is grounded and isn't a problem with all the other sanders so its hard to pin point why the static build up is so bad.

Pretty good comparative vid. I have been curious about the Dewalt as it doesn't seem like for me that it would make sense as I am all about the vac. I have the higher priced Planex that breaks apart and extensions can be added. I have been contemplating the Mirka as well so it was good to see the other options on the table.
The new Planex I just recently learned about and the lights look a big plus. The sanding motion is more similar to the ETS smaller sanders they have, so it seems like it would be comparative to the Mirka for fine finish sanding. If looking to remove texture a person would likely want the older versions of the Planex I think.

Nice vid! We’re pretty lucky to have all these options now. The new planex 2 is a random orbit like the mirka plus it holds itself to the ceiling which looks cool. I’m going to guess the price will be up there though, probably more than the original planex which is the most expensive one out there. Festool usually does a release in April so I’d guess it’s coming then. Oh and the festool harness works with the dewalt!

Im pretty sure static is the result of the type of plastic used. I wonder if changing out the two head hoses on the Mirka would make a difference?
Good theory maybe because out of all the ones we own Mirka is the only one that gives us a jolt. Since I changed out the house to one that is always touching the ground since its longer we haven't gotten shocked.

I thought something was wrong with my porter cable and that’s why it wouldn’t flip up on ceilings guess that seems to be the common complaint with them , such a horrible design for a drywall sander

The Mirka/hilti is the only one I recommend for fine sanding on ceilings the festool is good for aggressive sanding. The potercable is good if you want to build massive traps / neck and shoulders. It's crazy heavy compared to all the new ones currently available.

The static is coming from the air going through the hose. The hose needs to be grounded.

Why do you need drywall sander? If the trowel leaves completely flat joint mud.
No it doesn't. Any worn in trowel will be slightly bent, leaving a hollow joint.
When using a magic flat trowel, or a joint knife, you'd fill it flat. But then it shrinks, becoming hollow again. Needing another layer (or two).
The sander is all about time.
If you're only filling the joints, you can use a hollow trowel which leaves a bulge. After drying/shrinking it'll only protrude a tad and the sander gets it flat.
When doing a full coat, you'd apply a thin layer of finishing paste to the whole surface (spraying or rolling) after having filled the joint. The paste dries rather then hardens, so taking out all the ridges left by the finishing knife is a pain. Much easier to just give it a quick sand the next day..
Ps: this is coming from a European. Only just having subscribed to this dude I might find that some of the above won't hold up to how it's done across the pond..

Great video! How do you think the Festool would do on painted popcorn? Most the videos I’ve seen on it are removing non painted popcorn.
Ya painted ceilings are pretty hard especially if it's oil based paint. No sander would be able to remove even with a 20 grit. If it's one coat of a water base paint then it might take some off but not as much as what you see online.
Haha I was so pissed when I put mine on painted popcorn for the first time. I have the festool it works but I really wish it had more power. I remove textures to apply Venetian plaster, machine only makes my life slightly easier

Have you tried the Dewalt Flexvolt dust extractor with the DWE800? I'm getting that setup to be completely cordless, but I know I'm going to drop hundreds on flexible batteries lol. Just curious how it has helped make you more efficient

Haha ya I have read mix reviews on the suction ability of the cordless extractor. I guess it comes down to what the main use the sander will be for if it's a light finish sand and you already own the flexvolt then it might make sense. If it's for heavy sanding I don't think it's meant for that. I heard when it plugs and an alarm goes off that can become kind of iritating so I seen videos online of guys bypassing the alarm to allow the vacuum to push through the heavier sanding. Over all if its for turning big projects over I don't think the tech is there yet compared to a corded hepa vac. It's a prefect fit for remodels and patches. I might just get one to see if it can handle.🤔🤙🏽

You're pronouncing Porter Cable wrong. It's Porter, not Potter. Also the DeWalt as a kit is the price as that older model of Festool; I know because I sold both at my previous job. While this model of Festool drywall sander is heavier, it's not their latest and is therefore not a direct competitor to the Mirka or DeWalt. The new Festool is definitely worth the money vs the DeWalt, for the lighter weight, halo light, and far superior dust extraction, not to mention it's guaranteed to last longer than the DeWalt because let's be honest here, it's DeWalt vs Festool, it's obvious who's going to win. Also that hose isn't actually an antistatic hose, and if it was, you need to make sure that your dust extractor has a grounding tab on the hose connection, which is what keeps it from shocking you.

😂ya I know what you mean never got shocked once with the dewalt yet ( knock on wood). The Mirka is good now that I have a longer hose always touching the ground. (Grounded).

Leros makes smooth result even with 100, but not less

Yes similar to the dewalt but dewalt is cheaper. It all comes down to what platform you use if you already have makita battery better fit for you. If you have nither to me dewalt makes more sense since its cheaper and flexible compatible if you want longer run time.

How is the mirka with sanding angles (inside corners)? Any tips or tricks that are needed for that sander?
All electric sanders are similar in that aspect they can kill the outside edge but you still need to give it a quick pass with the sanding sponge
