Hi everyone! My name is Dan, and I am a veterinarian.
Today I am talking about Dog Cancer. Lymphoma is a type of cancer in dogs. I have a lot of owners call or come into the clinic, and the first thing they ask is, "Does my dog have cancer?". Owners will notice that they dog's lymph nodes may be enlarged. Once an owner notices large lymph nodes they might start to panic or worry about their dogs health.
When a dog comes in with a possible cancer diagnosis, my goal is to figure out as quickly as possible if we are dealing with cancer or is there inflammation or infection causing the swollen lymph nodes. Just like people, the lymph nodes on a dog drain regions of the body of infection or inflammation. If there is inflection or inflammation, the lymph node can be very swollen and painful at that location.
When it comes to lymphoma or cancer of the lymph nodes, I as a veterinarian and looking for a few key things. The most important thing is that multiple lymph nodes will be swollen. Because this dog cancer effects the whole body, all of the lymph nodes or a majority of the lymph nodes will be enlarged. In this video I cover where all these lymph nodes can be found.
I also cover how a veterinarian may sample the lymph node to get a diagnosis and then treatment options of dog lymphoma.

My 12 yr old Border collie, best friend love of my life seemed to be in great health. Perfect weight, was eating great with vegetables & added protein to 1/2 recommended taste of the wild feeding.
He fetched ball 20 minutes a day for a good workout. He seemed fine when I left for work. When I got home he was sad loooking , would not get up without help. I took him out and he went 1&2.
He was walking but he didn’t seem right. Slow not playful. I thought he may have hurt something playing ball the previous day. He is kind of a big baby and he has twisted Foot or leg and limped for a day in the past. That’s how he acted so I thought I would see how he was in the am. He was worse. Couldn’t get up. It was Sat morning, I live in a small ski town and the 3 vets in town had all left for thanksgiving. I had to drive 2 hrs to a emergency 24 hr clinic in Denver.
They said I needed to put him down. They thought he had cancer or tumor that burst. I got the opinion of 3 vets including 1 I had known for 40 yrs.
In less than 24 hrs my dog went from hard play and exercise to having to be put down. It’s killing me, my boy.😭😢😩

My 5yo Pomeranian was diagnosed with Lymphoma last month and was given a prognosis of about 1 month. She stopped eating and was vomiting. I thought she had a blockage. I never dreamed it was cancer. She's had three treatments of chemo at $7000 for six months. Pet insurance would have covered most of this cost but I didn't have it. It will extend her life by a year. It wasn't an easy decision to make, but even after only 3 treatments she's back to normal with absolutely no negative side effects.

My golden retriever 10 yrs old had lymphoma, vets ran tests and said the numbers look like cancer and he only had two days left to live so we took him to some ER clinics to find out what was wrong with him and all the testing they did after they came to the conclusion it was lymphoma so we made him as comfortable as possible and put him down. Prior to diagnosis he was having a hard time getting up for months and it was getting worse and worse and noticeable. Then he started not eating good and at the final stages he was puking and couldnt really move all that well. Super sad i still miss him.

You’re amazing. Thank you for explaining this clear and concisely. I’m going through a possible diagnosis with my 3 years old dog. Either Lymphoma or Leptospirosis or possible Hepatitis. My dog presented with vomiting and after extensive tests, ultra sounds, fine needle samples, and IV fluids, the vets still have no idea. She seems to be improving after two days with electrolytes, fluids, and the integration of doxycycline. Blood work on Monday to see if her liver enzymes have lowered (the only major issue internally) and one small inflamed lymph node, which I assumed was due to the possible infection. She has no other lymph nodes inflamed or swollen. I’m just so confused how my vets can’t figure it out. Waiting on the lepto results

Hi Emily! I am so sorry your doggy's lymph nodes are swollen. Yes, it is possible your doggy has everything from infection or inflammation too. This is why we always do a biopsy to get the diagnosis. Lymphoma is a horrible cancer that does not care about the dog's age and it does affect all the lymph nodes. I have seen it in very young dogs. I hope the biopsy is good news.

hi. you probably wont read this or might not even bother to reply. i have a beautiful golden boy who is turning 10 this january, and was recently diagnosed with lymphoma. nodules are scattered on his lungs and liver, chemo is an option but the our vet is not confident considering his age and the location of the cancer. i have been to other vets for consult, and they all said the same. they have never tried chemo on a senior dog.
would you recommend chemo for my old boy?
i’d very much appreciate your advise on this.

my sweet sweet baby of 14 years just got diagnosis with lymphoma . She has no symptoms except the swelling around the neck area. She's still loves to play, runs around with her sisters, and is still sassy and loves her treats. The vet says she has about 2 months. I just don't understand. How can a dog that looks so healthy be dying so quickly?? this is normal?? I feel so confused but IDK if I'm just in denial.

Hopefully you can answer this. My dog is a Shetland sheep dog at 12 years old and around Christmas time this past year my dog wasn’t eating as much as he used to. At first we thought he was just being picky. But as of just a few days ago. He has multiple swollen lymph nodes. Took him to the vet and they said they couldn’t conclude what he had based off the tests they did. I was doing my own research and came across Rheumatoid Arthritis on dogs. It had various of the same symptoms like swollen lymph nodes and loss of appetite. There were also some other symptoms that came along with it like tonsillitis and kidney disease. And my dog has kidney disease as well. He also is stiff in the joints and all that arthritis stuff. So I’m just wondering what you think. Should we assume it’s lymphoma or could it be Rheumatoid Arthritis?

The inflamation has gone down a lot. I'm just wondering if supplements alone can cure it. I'm hoping and praying that it can because I cannot imagine my life without my precious Snoopy. He is only 9 years old and he misses walking so much. I've walked him pretty much every day his whole life because he loves it so much. Now he hasn't got to go in one month exactly today. @Flanclanman. I know exactly how you feel. Our 8 year old dog was diagnosed on 2/14/23. We are heartbroken. Like your dog, she seems normal. When she wakes up, she is so happy and cannot wait to have breakfast. She literally dances all over the house. She naps a lot, but that is normal. She goes for a walk every day. She is the sweetest baby and although she has the big lump under her neck, I think “what if she is really ok?”. We are retired and we have always had pets. We know that she and her brother will be our last dogs. We are getting older and it is hard to find people who will take your animals, especially if there are two of them and they are older. We are just heartbroken over this. Our vet has done a complete blood panel, anesthesia, biopsy, chest X-ray, and exam. (I agree with the statement about getting pet insurance). We have done a lot of research and it is sad how many dogs get this. We don’t have real kids, so we spoil our pets; they have always been fed nutritious food, received their vaccines, and take heartworm and flea/ tick medicine. They sleep with us and go on vacation with us. We cannot imagine not having her in our life. Prayers go out to you and your little dog. As you said, it is difficult to cope with this.

Do the soaks and the Rutabaga cleanse religiously. Your dog will be okay. Cancer is not a death sentence if you know what to do.
