It was the eleventh three days ago, I walked up the memorial and I was the only person there. As I bowed my head for a moment of prayer a man suited and booted, in a kilt with his bagpipes played a lament, l was wearing sunglasses so you couldn’t see my tears. I cherish that memory.
This is one of my favorite songs. I just love the lyrics and the deeper meaning of this song and I have to say your rendition is by far the best one I've heard yet. Just wanted to comment and say that. Thank you for this great version.
I used your video / version for a 100 year memorial post after searching many versions (yes even including DM's). Yours hit the notes and heartstrings the best. My FB post read: This song has tugged at my heart and haunted me ever since I first heard it back when I was 19 myself. It honors Willie McBride, a young, Irish soldier who died way too young in one of many senseless battles of one of way too many wars..this month 100 years ago."Now Willie McBride I can't help wonder whyDo those who lie here do they know why they diedDid they really beleive when they answered the calldid they really believe that this war would end warsForever this song of suffereing and shame the killing the dying was all done in vainfor young Willie McBride it's all happened again, and again, and again, and again and again"✌🏼️❤️ Phenomenal performance, Liam!
Man this is a beautiful interpretation of this song and the timbre of your voice really makes it shine! It got me right in the feels, man! I really would have blown my load if it was just a fraction less rushed. Your voice has all the character to really tell a good tale Awesome work mate!
ive tried to workout why 10 people dont like this but for the life of me i cant this is a great cover of one of the best song ever written keep it up liam
I know that this is a fairly old recording but the message never goes out of date, the song was probably ten years old when I first heard it. It was an annual on a radio Scotland memorial program hosted by Iain Anderson. It still and will always move me, I have zero combat experience but I hold in the highest regard those that voluntarily choose to serve. I’m now in my sixties and I am gutted at how much we have failed to learn. Anyway, be well. 🙏🏻✝️🏴
Reckon you could modernise original lyrics by changing the last chorus from 'did's into 'do's. Sad state of affairs after 'again and again' x4. We've traded cannon fodder in trenches for remote attacks on civilians. Anyway, a brilliant delivery of this great song.
Well, how do you do, young Willie McBride, Do you mind if I sit here down by your graveside, And rest for a while 'neath the warm summer sun, I've been walkin' all day and I'm nearly done. I see by your gravestone you were only nineteen, When you joined the great fallen in nineteen sixteen, I hope you died well and I hope you died clean, Or young Willie McBride was it slow and unseen. Did they beat the drum slowly, did they play the fife lowly? Did they sound the death march as they lowered you down? And did the band play The Last Post and Chorus? Did the pipes play The Flowers Of The Forest? Did you leave 'ere a wife or a sweetheart behind, In some faithful heart is your memory enshrined. Although you died back in nineteen sixteen, In that faithful heart are you forever nineteen. Or are you a stranger without even a name, Enclosed in forever behind the glass pane, In an old photograph, torn, battered and stained, And faded to yellow in a brown leather frame. Did they beat the drum slowly, did they play the fife lowly? Did they sound the death march as they lowered you down? And did the band play The Last Post and Chorus? Did the pipes play The Flowers Of The Forest? The sun now it shines on the green fields of France There's a warm summer breeze, makes the red poppies dance. And look how the sun shines from under the clouds There's no gas, no barbed wire, there's no guns firing now. But here in this graveyard it's still no-man's-land. The countless white crosses stand mute in the sand, To man's blind indifference to his fellow man, To a whole generation that were butchered and damned. Did they beat the drum slowly, did they play the fife lowly? Did they sound the death march as they lowered you down? And did the band play The Last Post and Chorus? Did the pipes play The Flowers Of The Forest? Ah, young Willie McBride, I can't help wonder why, Do those that lie here know why did they die And did they believe when they answered the call Did they really believe that this war would end war. For the sorrow, the suffering, the glory, the pain, The killing, and the dying was all done in vain... For, young Willie McBride, it all happened again, and again, and again, and again, and again. Did they beat the drum slowly, did they play the fife lowly? Did they sound the death march as they lowered you down? And did the band play The Last Post and Chorus? Did the pipes play The Flowers Of The Forest?

Haunting and beautiful! Sad to say, we've learned nothing about the horror of war.

Hi Liam it is millie my Daddy is Tony mcgrandles
Well, how do you do, young Willie McBride,
Do you mind if I sit here down by your graveside,
And rest for a while 'neath the warm summer sun,
I've been walkin' all day and I'm nearly done.
I see by your gravestone you were only nineteen,
When you joined the great fallen in nineteen sixteen,
I hope you died well and I hope you died clean,
Or young Willie McBride was it slow and unseen.
Did they beat the drum slowly, did they play the fife lowly?
Did they sound the death march as they lowered you down?
And did the band play The Last Post and Chorus?
Did the pipes play The Flowers Of The Forest?
Did you leave 'ere a wife or a sweetheart behind,
In some faithful heart is your memory enshrined.
Although you died back in nineteen sixteen,
In that faithful heart are you forever nineteen.
Or are you a stranger without even a name,
Enclosed in forever behind the glass pane,
In an old photograph, torn, battered and stained,
And faded to yellow in a brown leather frame.
Did they beat the drum slowly, did they play the fife lowly?
Did they sound the death march as they lowered you down?
And did the band play The Last Post and Chorus?
Did the pipes play The Flowers Of The Forest?
The sun now it shines on the green fields of France
There's a warm summer breeze, makes the red poppies dance.
And look how the sun shines from under the clouds
There's no gas, no barbed wire, there's no guns firing now.
But here in this graveyard it's still no-man's-land.
The countless white crosses stand mute in the sand,
To man's blind indifference to his fellow man,
To a whole generation that were butchered and damned.
Did they beat the drum slowly, did they play the fife lowly?
Did they sound the death march as they lowered you down?
And did the band play The Last Post and Chorus?
Did the pipes play The Flowers Of The Forest?
Ah, young Willie McBride, I can't help wonder why,
Do those that lie here know why did they die
And did they believe when they answered the call
Did they really believe that this war would end war.
For the sorrow, the suffering, the glory, the pain,
The killing, and the dying was all done in vain...
For, young Willie McBride, it all happened again,
and again, and again, and again, and again.
Did they beat the drum slowly, did they play the fife lowly?
Did they sound the death march as they lowered you down?
And did the band play The Last Post and Chorus?
Did the pipes play The Flowers Of The Forest?
Surprisingly good audio for such potato vid.
No its not the Green Fields Of France , It's Willy McBride ,,
Actually the original title is "No Man's Land." By any name, a poignant song and an excellent cover.
Great version 👌
