The quality and quantity of intense gay staring in this episode never gets old, IMO. That and the little conspiratorial "shhhh" Ed makes after he tells Stede "I'm Blackbeard." I love watching them interact.

The real Stede Bonnet apparently was really unhappy being married and that's why he went off to be a pirate. But there's nothing about why he was unhappy. I like how sympathetically they have portrayed Mary in this. He did end up living on Blackbeard's ship with his library lol, it's such an incredible story.
Ed;s face in that last shot is so brilliant, you can't tell what he's thinking.
Agree about the chemistry between Taika and Rhys, it's great.

Yeah I get very mad when reactors call her boring and such.
It's not like women really had a lot of options in those days! It's hardly Mary's fault that they got married!
At every point she was way more stuck than he ever was. Because he's a man he had the option of just fking off to be a pirate because he didn't want to be a family man any more. If Mary had just left him, Stede could have finanically ruined her and prevented her from ever seeing their children again. Possibly even gotten her committed.

It's why people think he decided to become a pirate but a lot of information from that era is lacking or just aggressive anti pirate propaganda. In "A General History of the Pyrates", the ultimate book on piracy from that era, which is definitely full of propaganda, we get the epic explanation:
"this Humour of going a pyrating, proceeded from a Disorder in his Mind, which had been but too visible in him, some Time before this wicked Undertaking; and which is said to have been occasioned by some Discomforts he found in a married State"
Giving rise to the belief he left a nagging wife. Make of that what you wish.
What we do know from historical records is that the Bonnets' oldest son, Allamby, died shortly before Stede left. Also right before he left he'd borrowed around £2000, or the equivalent of around half a million dollars. It's possible he was in some kind of financial difficulty at the time and figured piracy would solve things.
A General History of the Pyrates is also very focused on talking about how much Stede regrets becoming a pirate and how much he longs to repent. Which there is no evidence for but does fit into the propaganda of the era. "Going a pyrating" was a common enough choice people made. Typically if you were well off only if you had a naval background, which Stede decidedly did not, but he wasn't the only aristocrat pirate. It was especially common for Jacobites who thought James should be the king rather than George. Thinking of piracy
as a way of fighting the crown was very common and a much more likely explanation. Considering how popular pirates were and how worried the crown was saying an aristo would have to be "Disorder in his Mind" would have been much more kindly received than calling Stede Bonnet a Jacobite rebel.
Which is still just a theory and no one really knows what drove him. Could have been anything or a combination of anything.
And yeah Taika is amazing in this. The nuance he brings to Blackbeard and the chemistry he has with Rhys changes a great premise into really compelling TV.

@@cupguin IDK, he was seen by sources at the time mooning about in lounging gowns on Blackbeard's ship, and had bought his library with him, which Blackbeard indulged.
I find the Jacobite thing a bit ridiculous but of course he might not have liked her, and he might have just wanted to get away.
He was a rubbish pirate though and his crew kept wanting to mutiny, I like how that was kinda put into the show.
Also when he was executed he carried a bouquet of wilted flowers to the scaffold and there's that drawing that was done of him holding these flowers whilst hanging.
I definitely think, whilst this is hardly a documentary, it is a reasonable way to look at the story. There's not a lot and the few sources there are are pretty enigmatic.
It's also fascinating that after Blackbeard nicked his ship and went off, and he was condemned to death, it took a long time because he had some support and were some compelling rumours Blackbeard was protecting him from afar, but then of course he got killed and after that Stede was executed.
It is interesting not that there's a lot to go on but David Jenkins has done a great job, and the real people were so young, so he's changed it up a lot. Izzy Hands died in his 20s..

I personally have always read it as Ed needing to buy time and knowing exactly what to say to keep Izzy on the ship. Cause he was already fascinated enough by Stede to have Izzy go talk to him, I don't believe he ever really wanted to steal his identity, Stede was just the only person he's known that he could share all his actual thoughts and feelings with and he could show him how to get a life he's always idealized in his head.
Fun fact: David Fane (Fang) had a line he was supposed to say, but forgot what it was, so he just decided to hiss 🤣 I love how much improv from the cast makes it into this show 😁
Frenchie nailing his sleeve to the deck gets me every time 🤣 and Lucius "repairing" the railing is also hilarious.
Can't wait for your reaction to next episode, it's my favourite 😁💜🏳️‍🌈🏴‍☠️

I agree. After I re-watched this episode, I came away feeling this way too. The following two episodes pretty much show how Ed is able to be more of himself around Stede than anyone else. 🥹
